Schools are seeing an influx of disruptive behaviors related to an increase in emotional and behavioral issues. In the adolescent population, emotional and behavioral problems are manifested in a variety of forms and often result in some form of discipline within the school setting. Although discipline punishes the unwanted behavior, it does nothing to address the reason for the behavior.

An oral health education program for Latino immigrant parents.

A high prevalence of dental caries in the pediatric population is a major health problem. At highest risk are low-income minority groups, including refugee and immigrant populations. Consequences of oral disease include pain, difficulty eating and speaking, poor school performance, and poor self-esteem.

The relationship between perceived and ideal body size and body mass index in 3rd-grade low socioeconomic Hispanic children.

Very little is known about body satisfaction among minority children. This study examined the relationship between perceived and actual body size and Body Mass Index among 43 low-socioeconomic Hispanic 3rd-graders. Researchers measured participants' Body Mass Index; students self-reported Perceived Ideal Self Image and Perceived Actual Self Image using Collins' (1991) pictorial instrument scale of seven child body images that illustrate body weight from very thin to obese.

The effect of body position and mattress type on interface pressure in quadriplegic adults: a pilot study.

A convenience sample of 20 adults with quadriplegia was studied to determine preferred position and mattress to minimize occurrence of pressure ulcers. Lower positions produced lower interface pressures. A pressure-relieving mattress reduced interface pressures more than a pressure-reducing mattress.

Coping and social support for parents of children with autism.

Autism in children has increased significantly in the past 15 years. The challenges and stressors associated with providing services and caring for a child with autism affect families, educators, and health professionals. This descriptive study used a survey to collect data on parents' perceptions of coping strategies and social support.

Understanding the culture of Chinese children and families.

Providing appropriate health care to a client can be accomplished only in an environment that is sensitive to the cultural values and beliefs of the client. As the population of first- and second-generation Chinese immigrants increases in the United States, the need to develop culturally sensitive health care becomes significant. Chinese immigrants and their families have become an important part of American society, including the school setting.

A multi-factor analysis of job satisfaction among school nurses.

Although job satisfaction has been widely studied among registered nurses working in traditional health care settings, little is known about the job-related values and perceptions of nurses working in school systems. Job satisfaction is linked to lower levels of job-related stress, burnout, and career abandonment among nurses. This study evaluated the level of job satisfaction among a convenience sample of school nurses practicing in California.

Increasing self-efficacy and knowledge through a seizure education program for special education teachers.

Since the passage of the 1975 Education for All Handicapped Children Act and the 1986 PL99-457 amendment, many children aged birth to 3 years with special health care needs are enrolled in early intervention programs. Educators working in early intervention services often need to respond to and manage seizure activity and medical emergencies for special needs children. To do so, they need to have knowledge and confidence in their ability to intervene effectively.
