Background: The severe forms of influenza infection requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission remain a medical challenge due to its high mortality. New H1N1 strains were hypothesized to increase mortality. The studies below represent a large series focusing on ICU-admitted influenza patients over the last decade with an emphasis on factors related to death.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares two lung biopsy methods: surgical lung biopsy (SLB) and trans-bronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC).
  • TBLC is safer for patients who are older or have other health problems, making it a good option when SLB is too risky.
  • Results from 96 patients show no significant differences in complications between those at high risk and those at low risk, suggesting TBLC is a safe choice for high-risk patients.

is a rare species of slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). From 2002 to 2017, we conducted a retrospective study that included all patients with NTM-positive respiratory samples detected in two university hospitals of the French overseas department of Reunion Island. We recorded the prevalence of in this cohort, as well as the clinical, radiological, and microbiological features of patients with at least 1 sample positive for In our cohort, 97 patients (15.

Classical collapse therapy with extrapleural Lucite balls placement used for tuberculosis sequelae is associated with long term complications, such as migration of the foreign body. We report a new modality of collapse therapy for tuberculosis cavitation which may avoid this complication and which uses percutaneous tissue expanders. Postoperative course was uneventful and mid term follow-up confirmed the functional improvement without recurrence of the infection.

Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) has become an important tool for studying functional gene expression. However the most often used cycle threshold (CT)-based method, primarily related to the required amplification efficiency determination via serial dilution, can call into question the level of quantitative reliability and accuracy that can be achieved, in addition to the impracticalities inherent to CT-based methodologies. In this study, an alternative method, named the sigmoidal curve-fitting (SCF) method, was compared with the classic CT method for two target genes (XRCC4 and HIF-1alpha) and a reference gene (HPRT).
