The analysis is based on the three jets with the highest transverse momenta. The cross section is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets in a range of 445-3270 GeV and in two bins of the maximum rapidity of the jets up to a value of 2.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA search has been performed for long-lived particles that could have come to rest within the CMS detector, using the time intervals between LHC beam crossings. The existence of such particles could be deduced from observation of their decays via energy deposits in the CMS calorimeter appearing at times that are well separated from any proton-proton collisions. Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 18.

The production of the strange and double-strange baryon resonances ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) has been measured at mid-rapidity ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]) in proton-proton collisions at [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] 7 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Transverse momentum spectra for inelastic collisions are compared to QCD-inspired models, which in general underpredict the data. A search for the [Formula: see text] pentaquark, decaying in the [Formula: see text] channel, has been carried out but no evidence is seen.

Proteolysis of the mirror image enzyme revealed that in contrast to its native counterpart, d-barnase was completely stable to digestive proteases.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOptimization of the chemical structure of antitumor photosensitizers (PSs) is aimed at increasing their affinity to a transport protein, albumin and irreversible light-induced tumor cell damage. Bacteriopurpurinimide derivatives are promising PSs thanks to their ability to absorb light in the near infrared spectral region. Using spectrophotometry, we show that two new bacteriopurpurinimide derivatives with different substituents at the N atoms of the imide exocycle and the pyrrole ring A are capable of forming non-covalent complexes with human serum albumin (HSA).

VEGF-A expression increased in the tumor node and salivary gland after monotherapy with melatonin and cyclophosphamide during progression of tumor growth and paraneoplastic syndrome. A decrease in VEGF-A expression in the tumor node and salivary gland was found after monotherapy with melatonin and cyclophosphamide and, especially, after combined treatment, which proves maximum therapeutic efficiency of combined administration of chemical agents with various mechanisms of action.

In molecular evolution the distinction between conservative (negative) selection, innovative (positive) selection and unconstrained evolution (drift) is usually ambiguous at the gene level. Only rare cases with the ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous nucleotide substitutions above unity (dN/dS>1) are thought to be due to positive selection, whereas the lower dN/dS ratio may indicate negative selection in combination with drift.

Accumulation of cholesterol in arterial wall macrophages is a main hallmark of atherosclerosis. The ABCG1 transporter mediates cholesterol efflux to high density lipoproteins (HDL) and plays an important role in macrophage foam cell formation. The goal of our study was to investigate the potential role of ABCG1 in atherosclerosis development in humans.

We show that a TLS may be excited by an external light pulse whose spectral components are below the absorption line of the TLS. We attribute this unique dynamics to the Rabi oscillations of the TLS in a superoscillating driving field.

In this role it determines the cellular rate of ATP synthesis by oxidative phosphorylation and is the key to understanding how energy metabolism is regulated. Four electrons are required for the reduction of oxygen to water, and these are provided by the one-electron donor, cytochrome c.
