Article Synopsis
  • Teratomas occur in about 1 in 4,000 live births, with head-and-neck teratomas (epignathus) being particularly rare.
  • Patients with epignathus often experience significant facial disfigurement, respiratory issues, and feeding difficulties.
  • Early surgical removal is crucial to prevent serious health complications, such as airway obstruction, as demonstrated in a case involving a patient with pedunculated epignathus and cervical lymphangioma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the association between specific single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), MTHFR C677T and MTR A2756G, and their potential role in neural tube defects (NTDs) during pregnancy, emphasizing the importance of folate levels.
  • It involved 397 participants (163 with NTDs and 234 controls), examining their genetic profiles and measuring red blood cell (RBC) folate levels using specific laboratory techniques.
  • The findings revealed lower RBC folate levels in NTD patients compared to controls and suggest that certain genetic variants in MTHFR and MTR are linked to an increased risk of NTDs during pregnancy

Endotracheal tube block due to various mechanical causes such as mucous, blood clot, denture, and ampoules have been reported. A patient of achalasia cardia with chronic passive aspiration pneumonitis developed mucoid mass in the respiratory passage which dislodged during the surgical procedure. The episode occurred almost an hour after induction of anesthesia and the dislodged mucoid mass blocked the lumen of endotracheal tube, leading to hypoxia and impending cardiac arrest.
