Organic carbonates are an important source for polycarbonate synthesis. However, their synthesis generally requires phosgene, sophisticated catalysts, harsh reaction conditions, or other highly reactive chemicals. We present the first direct electrochemical generation of mesityl methyl carbonate by C-H activation.

The results show that, on gold electrodes, the formation of DPC is observed at potentials as low as 0.4 V vs Ag/AgCl, together with the formation of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from the carbonylation of methanol that was used as a solvent.

For the first time, the reaction was shown to take place on the metallic catalysts without need of oxidized metals or additives. Moreover, in-situ spectroelectrochemical techniques were applied to this electrosynthesis reaction in order to reveal the reaction intermediates and to shed light into the reaction mechanism.
