Gut microbiota composition and functionality are involved in the pathophysiology of several intestinal and extraintestinal diseases, and are increasingly considered a modulator of local and systemic inflammation. However, the involvement of gut microbiota in diverticulosis and in diverticular disease is still poorly investigated. In this review, we critically analyze the existing evidence on the fecal and mucosa-associated microbiota composition and functionality across different stages of diverticular disease.

Aim: To evaluate the gastric permeability after both acute and chronic use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and to assess the clinical usefulness of sucrose test in detecting and following NSAIDs- induced gastric damage mainly in asymptomatic patients and the efficacy of a single pantoprazole dose in chronic users.

Methods: Seventy-one consecutive patients on chronic therapy with NSAIDs were enrolled in the study and divided into groups A and B (group A receiving 40 mg pantoprazole daily, group B only receiving NSAIDs). Sucrose test was performed at baseline and after 2, 4 and 12 wk, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • PFIC (Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis) is a genetic liver disorder that primarily affects children, with different types linked to specific gene mutations.
  • PFIC 1 and PFIC 2 both cause cholestasis, but PFIC 1 is characterized by ATP8B1 gene mutations while PFIC 2 involves defects in the Bile Salt Export Pump (BSEP).
  • PFIC 3 presents later in life and poses serious risks like portal hypertension; it is tied to a defect in the MDR protein, with treatment often requiring liver transplantation despite initial therapies such as biliary diversion and ursodeoxycholic acid.
