Hand hygiene, knowledge and training motivational drives: findings from a survey in a university hospital.

This study assessed healthcare workers' (HCWs) knowledge and adherence to hand hygiene principles in a large Italian university hospital, focusing on identifying knowledge gaps and evaluating training effectiveness. A specifically designed 17-item questionnaire, based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Hand Hygiene Knowledge Questionnaire, was used to measure theoretical knowledge, the role of training, and the impact of experience. The survey had an 8% participation rate (542 responses from a total of 6,749 HCWs), with higher responses among nurses and doctors.

Anti-Shrinkage Technique for Feline Skin Samples.

Surgical resection of subcutaneous neoplasms with clear margins is crucial for preventing local recurrence and avoiding adjuvant treatments. However, the evaluation of surgical margins often differs significantly from the histopathological assessment due to tissue shrinkage, which can result in inaccurate therapeutic assessments and unreliable patient prognoses. In this study, ten feline cadavers were utilized.

Preclinical pharmacology of patient-derived extracellular vesicles for the intraoperative imaging of tumors.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from the plasma of oncological patients exhibit significant tumor-targeting properties, unlike those from healthy individuals. We have previously shown the feasibility of formulating the near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dye indocyanine green (ICG) with patient-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs) for selective delivery to neoplastic tissue. This staining protocol holds promise for clinical application in intraoperative tumor margin imaging, enabling precise neoplastic tissue resection.

Evaluation of the Effect of a New Skin Fixation Technique to Avoid Shrinkage of Skin Samples Obtained from Canine Cadavers.

Skin shrinkage begins immediately after surgical incision and is an artefact associated with the excision and fixation of a specimen. Skin shrinkage results in important changes in histologic tissue dimensions and can affect the correct quantification of the histologic tumour-free margin (HTFM). Bilateral and symmetrical circular skin samples with a diameter of 60 mm were taken from the lateral thoracic, flank and femoral regions of dog cadavers, with the samples from one side belonging to the study group and the samples from the same animal from the other side belonging to the control group.

We showed in a previous study that gadolinium-labelled EVs derived from canine gliomas (cPDEVs) can selectively targets murine glioblastoma cells in animal models.

Aim: This pilot study assessed the effectiveness duration of sanitization methods, focusing on 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes and ultraviolet-C (UVC) boxes, aiming to obtain preliminary data on the reduction in total bacterial load 3 h post-sanitization.

Methods: A randomized monocentric trial with two intervention arms (wipes and UVC boxes) was designed.

However, their use and distribution in the presence of an intact BBB and their ability to target GBM tissue are still under investigation.

Subclonal Cancer Driver Mutations Are Prevalent in the Unresected Peritumoral Edema of Adult Diffuse Gliomas.

Unlabelled: Adult diffuse gliomas commonly recur regardless of therapy. As recurrence typically arises from the peritumoral edema adjacent to the resected bulk tumor, the profiling of somatic mutations from infiltrative malignant cells within this critical, unresected region could provide important insights into residual disease. A key obstacle has been the inability to distinguish between next-generation sequencing (NGS) noise and the true but weak signal from tumor cells hidden among the noncancerous brain tissue of the peritumoral edema.

Comparison of the Trachea in Normocephalic versus Brachycephalic Cats on the Basis of CT-Derived Measurements.

Tracheal hypoplasia is a major concern in brachycephalic dogs, but there is no consensus for the trachea in brachycephalic cats. We aimed to compare tracheal length and diameter between normo- and brachycephalic cats using computed tomography (CT) image measurements and evaluate their usefulness in tracheostomy planning. A total of 15 normocephalic and 14 brachycephalic cats were included in the study.

Introduction: Recruitment efforts have demonstrated small increases in female and under-represented applicants in recent years; however, the majority of surgical programs remain predominantly Caucasian and male. With increased national emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives and mentoring programs, applicants to surgical specialties have continued to increase. While strategies to improve gender and racial diversity are now openly discussed, it is unclear if we have seen significant improvement.

Potential Use of a Combined Bacteriophage-Probiotic Sanitation System to Control Microbial Contamination and AMR in Healthcare Settings: A Pre-Post Intervention Study.

Microbial contamination in the hospital environment is a major concern for public health, since it significantly contributes to the onset of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), which are further complicated by the alarming level of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of HAI-associated pathogens. Chemical disinfection to control bioburden has a temporary effect and can favor the selection of resistant pathogens, as observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, probiotic-based sanitation (probiotic cleaning hygiene system, PCHS) was reported to stably abate pathogens, AMR, and HAIs.

CT measurements of tracheal diameter and length in normocephalic cats.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to measure the tracheal dimensions of normocephalic cats using CT.

Methods: CT images of 15 client-owned normocephalic cats were retrospectively evaluated to measure the length of the feline trachea. Transverse and vertical inner diameters were measured in five different tracheal regions, and the cross-sectional area of the tracheal lumen was calculated for each point of measurement.

Background: The Purkinje fibers convey the electrical impulses at much higher speed than the working myocardial cells. Thus, the distribution of the Purkinje network is of paramount importance for the timing and coordination of ventricular activation. The Purkinje fibers are found in the subendocardium of all species of mammals, but some mammals also possess an intramural Purkinje fiber network that provides for relatively instantaneous, burst-like activation of the entire ventricular wall, and gives rise to an rS configuration in lead II of the ECG.

Increased Sensitivity of Computed Tomography Scan for Neoplastic Tissues Using the Extracellular Vesicle Formulation of the Contrast Agent Iohexol.

Computed tomography (CT) is a diagnostic medical imaging modality commonly used to detect disease and injury. Contrast agents containing iodine, such as iohexol, are frequently used in CT examinations to more clearly differentiate anatomic structures and to detect and characterize abnormalities, including tumors. However, these contrast agents do not have a specific tropism for cancer cells, so the ability to detect tumors is severely limited by the degree of vascularization of the tumor itself.

Preliminary Studies on the Intrahepatic Anatomy of the Venous Vasculature in Cats.

Hepatic surgeries are often performed in cats to obtain a disease diagnosis, for the removal of masses, or for the treatment of shunts. Whereas the vascular anatomy of the liver has been studied in dogs, such evidence is lacking in cats. The current study used corrosion casts of portal and hepatic veins and computed tomography (CT) analysis of the casts to identify and describe the intrahepatic anatomy in healthy cat livers ( = 7).

Feline gastrointestinal eosinophilic sclerosing fibroplasia presenting as a rectal mass.

Case Summary: A 9-year-old neutered male cat was referred owing to dyschezia and weight loss. Abdominal CT revealed a heterogeneous mass in the rectum and thickening of one caudal mesenteric lymph node. The mass induced a focal rectal obstruction.

The variability of chemical composition of the leaf essential oil (EO) from , a climbing liana growing wild in Ivory Coast, was investigated for the first time. The in vitro anti-inflammatory activity was also evaluated. Thirty oil samples were isolated from leaves collected in three forests of the country and analyzed using a combination of Column Chromatography (CC), Gas Chromatography with Retention Indices (GC(FID)), Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), and Carbon-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (C-NMR).

Anaesthetic Management of a Labrador Retriever Undergoing Adrenalectomy for Phaeochromocytoma Excision, a Case Report.

Perioperative management of cases undergoing phaeochromocytoma removal should aim at normalising blood pressure and heart rate, restoring volume depletion, and preventing catecholamine release induced by surgical manipulation. In this case report, a novel pharmacological approach in a dog undergoing surgical tumour excision is described. A 7-year-old 25-kg spayed female Labrador Retriever presented for repeated episodes of generalised weakness, pale mucous membranes, tachycardia, tremor, panting, vomiting, and hypertension over the last month was referred for surgical treatment of a left-sided adrenal tumour with invasion of the caudal vena cava.

Development of a checklist as self-assessment tool to evaluate the reprocessing of endoscopic instruments in an Italian teaching hospital.

Objective: The present study aims to develop a checklist, as a self-assessment tool, for evaluating all the items involved in the endoscope reprocessing that could be useful for the improvement and/or development of a safety endoscope reprocessing system.

Materials And Methods: A three-step modified Delphi method, with an embedded qualitative component, was adopted to develop the checklist. According to it, corrective actions were performed before its further re-administration.
