The Role of Vitamin D as an Independent Predicting Marker for One-Year Mortality in Patients with Acute Heart Failure.

Background: Deficiency in vitamin D3 and its metabolites has been linked to dismal outcomes in patients with chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and heart failure (HF). It remains unclear if a vitamin D3 status is a prognostic feature in patients with acute decompensated HF. Methods: We assessed serum levels of 25-OH-vitamin D3 and 1,25-(OH)2-vitamin D3 in 139 patients with acute HF who had been admitted to the intermediate care unit of a maximum care hospital.

[Sacubitril / Valsartan in patients with diabetes and heart failure].

Sacubitril / Valsartan proofed to be an effective treatment compared to enalapril in reducing heart failure hospitalisations and mortality in patients with severe "Heart failure with reduced ejection fraction" (HFREF). Recent European cardiology guidelines attributed a class IB recommendation for Sacubitril / Valsartan in HFREF patients who remain symptomatic despite optimal treatment with ACE-I, a beta-blocker, and a mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist. There is a significant overlap between diabetic and HFREF patients and thus, efficacy assessment of Sacubitril / Valsartan is a clinically meaningful issue in the large subgroup of HFREF patients with diabetes.

Sevelamer hydrochloride has been shown to attenuate cardiovascular calcifications in CKD and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. We assessed how sevelamer hydrochloride influences the evolution of serum fetuin-A and other serological factors predicting cardiovascular outcome and survival in haemodialysis patients.
