The postsynaptic effects of antidepressant drugs in the rat anococcygeus muscle.

The effects of antidepressants of tricyclic (amitriptyline, nortriptyline, protriptyline, doxepin, imipramine, and desipramine) and atypical (maprotiline, nomifensine, tandamine, viloxazine, CGP 6085A, and YM-08054-1) structures on contractile responses to exogenously applied acetylcholine and (-) noradrenaline were studied in rat isolated anococcygeus muscle previously incubated with 6-hydroxydopamine. Atropine, amitriptyline, protriptyline, doxepin, imipramine, maprotiline and nortriptyline inhibited contractile responses to acetylcholine whereas desipramine, nomifensine, tandamine, viloxazine, CGP 6085A and YM 08054-1 did not. The contractile responses to (-)-noradrenaline were inhibited by low concentrations of tricyclic antidepressants and by higher concentrations of the atypical agents.

The presence of two neuraminidases in an influenza virus.

The wild type influenza strain A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2), when disrupted with SDS and electrophoresed on cellulose acetate paper, yielded two separate neuraminidases, NA(H+) and NA(H-). These enzymes after extraction were biologically active and possessed different specific activities. Enzyme NA(H+) possessed neuraminidase as well as hemagglutinin activities whereas enzyme NA(H-) demonstrated only neuraminidase activity.

Accumulation and overflow of 3H following incubation of the guinea-pig gall bladder with [3H]-noradrenaline.

1 Strips of guinea-pig gall bladder readily accumulate (3)H following incubation in the presence of 5 x 10(-8) M (-)-[(3)H]-noradrenaline. This accumulation was reduced by lowering the incubation temperature (from 37 degrees to 23 degrees C), by cocaine (10(-6) M), by nortriptyline (10(-8), 10(-6) and 10(-4) M) and following incubation of the tissues with 6-hydroxydopamine (10(-3) M for 3 h). At 10(-6) M, (-)-noradrenaline and (-)-adrenaline, but not (-)-isoprenaline, inhibited the accumulation of (3)H.

The isolation and properties of a ribonuclease associated with influenza virus.

A ribonuclease activity associated with influenza virus has been purified to homogeneity. This preparation is free of DNAase, phosphodiesterase, and phosphatase activities. The purified enzyme has a pH optima of 7.

Influence of cold working on fatigue behavior of stainless steels used for prothesis: application to the study of wires with small sections.

Orthodontists mainly use stainless austenitic wires with a wide range of ultimate tensile strength. To characterize the dynamical behavior of these wires, the authors have perfected machines to test materials with their original surface roughness without any prior machining of surfaces. Fatigue limits are discussed through mechanical and structural properties of the austenitic steels, with special attention given to cold working.

Effect of split doses of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea on DNA repair synthesis in cultured mammalian cells.

DNA repair was measured in human fibroblasts, mouse C3H 10 T 1/2 fibroblsts and rat hepatocytes by the non-semi-conservative incorporation of [3H]-TdR during DNA repair synthesis using liquid scintillation techniques. Confluent monolayers of these cells grown on cover slips were exposed to split doses (125 or 250 microgram/ml) of the mutagenic and carcinogenic alkylating agent MNU and DNA repair synthesis compared with that produced by a single dose (500 microgram/ml). No significant difference in DNA repair capacity was detected in the three cell lines treated with a single dose or split doses of MNU.

Atlantic coast barrier-island shorelines are sinuous in plan view, with curvatures ranging in size from cusps to capes. The orientation of shoreline segments within the larger of these sinuous features (10 to 15 kilometers between apexes) is significantly related to shoreline dynamics.
