At the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ), an R&D platform for electron FLASH and very high energy electron radiation therapy and radiation biology is being prepared (FLASHlab@PITZ). The beam parameters available at PITZ are worldwide unique. They are based on experiences from 20 + years of developing high brightness beam sources and an ultra-intensive THz light source demonstrator for ps scale electron bunches with up to 5 nC bunch charge at MHz repetition rate in bunch trains of up to 1 ms length, currently 22 MeV (upgrade to 250 MeV planned).

Background: Liver compresses are frequently used in integrative medicine as supportive therapy during cancer treatment in order to reduce fatigue. We performed a pilot study to test whether the external application of yarrow liver compresses impacts fatigue in patients with metastatic cancer undergoing radiation therapy.

Methods: A randomized prospective pilot trial was performed including patients with brain metastasis or bone metastasis of solid tumors.

Objectives: Fever-range whole body hyperthermia (FRWBH) has been shown to improve tumor oxygenation in vivo. A prospective pilot study addressed the question if addition of FRWBH to re-irradiation is feasible in recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) with unfavorable prognostic features.

Materials And Methods: The study completed accrual with the recruitment of ten patients between April 2018 and March 2020.

Purpose: Recent studies indicate that FLASH irradiation, which involves ultra-high dose rates in a short time window (usually >40 Gy/s in <500 ms), might be equally efficient against tumors but less harmful to healthy tissues, compared to conventional irradiation with the same total dose. Aiming to verify the latter claim for ocular proton radiotherapy, in vivo experiments with mice are being carried out by Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. This work presents the implemented setup for delivering FLASH proton radiation to a single eye of mice at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB).

Purpose: [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) parameters have shown prognostic value in nasopharyngeal carcinomas (NPC), mostly in monocenter studies. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic impact of standard and novel PET parameters in a multicenter cohort of patients.

Methods: The established PET parameters metabolic tumor volume (MTV), total lesion glycolysis (TLG) and maximal standardized uptake value (SUVmax) as well as the novel parameter tumor asphericity (ASP) were evaluated in a retrospective multicenter cohort of 114 NPC patients with FDG-PET staging, treated with (chemo)radiation at 8 international institutions.
