Rearrest has been predicted by hemodynamic activity in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) during error-processing (Aharoni et al., 2013). Here, we evaluate the predictive power after adding an additional imaging modality in a subsample of 45 incarcerated males from Aharoni et al.

Changes in mitochondrial function and mitochondria associated protein expression in response to 2-weeks of high intensity interval training.

Purpose: High-intensity short-duration interval training (HIT) stimulates functional and metabolic adaptation in skeletal muscle, but the influence of HIT on mitochondrial function remains poorly studied in humans. Mitochondrial metabolism as well as mitochondrial-associated protein expression were tested in untrained participants performing HIT over a 2-week period.

Methods: Eight males performed a single-leg cycling protocol (12 × 1 min intervals at 120% peak power output, 90 s recovery, 4 days/week).

Extraordinary optical extinctions through dual metallic gratings.

We report on multiple extraordinary optical extinction (EOE) phenomena achieved through encapsulated dual metallic gratings. They are evidenced in TM polarization by angularly and spectrally resolved transmission measurements in the mid-infrared wavelength range. We show that EOE can be achieved on both sides of the extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) resonance, leading to pass-band filters with an improved rejection rate.

Sleep restriction during simulated wildfire suppression: effect on physical task performance.

Objectives: To examine the effects of sleep restriction on firefighters' physical task performance during simulated wildfire suppression.

Methods: Thirty-five firefighters were matched and randomly allocated to either a control condition (8-hour sleep opportunity, n = 18) or a sleep restricted condition (4-hour sleep opportunity, n = 17). Performance on physical work tasks was evaluated across three days.

Assessing psychopathy among justice involved adolescents with the PCL:YV: an item response theory examination across gender.

This study used an item response theory (IRT) model and a large adolescent sample of justice involved youth (N = 1,007, 38% female) to examine the item functioning of the Psychopathy Checklist-Youth Version (PCL: YV). Items that were most discriminating (or most sensitive to changes) of the latent trait (thought to be psychopathy) among adolescents included "glibness/superficial charm," "lack of remorse," and "need for stimulation," whereas items that were least discriminating included "pathological lying," "failure to accept responsibility," and "lacks goals." The items "impulsivity" and "irresponsibility" were the most likely to be rated high among adolescents, whereas "parasitic lifestyle," and "glibness/superficial charm" were the most likely to be rated low.

One, two, or three ports in laparoscopic cholecystectomy?

Single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has been compared with 3- or 4-port LC. To our knowledge, there are no studies comparing the 3-, 2-, and 1-port techniques. Patients were randomized into 3 groups: LC 1-port using SILS, LC 2-port using a laparoscope with a working channel, and LC 3-port using the standard ports.

Bioinspired direct access to benzofuroindolines by oxidative [3 + 2] annulation of phenols and indoles.

The straightforward entry to benzofuroindoline containing natural product-like scaffolds has been achieved by a challenging [3 + 2] oxidative coupling between phenols and indoles. The reaction proceeds by NIS-oxidation of the indole followed by the trapping of the resulting electrophilic intermediate by phenol.

Genome Sequence of Coxiella burnetii Strain AuQ01 (Arandale) from an Australian Patient with Acute Q Fever.

Coxiella burnetii strain AuQ01 was isolated from the serum of an Australian acute Q fever patient and represents the first whole genome from this historical Q fever country. This new genome shows distinct differences from existing genomic data and will enhance the understanding of this query pathogen.

Direct oxidative coupling of N-acetyl indoles and phenols for the synthesis of benzofuroindolines related to phalarine.

Inspired by the biogenetic synthesis of benzofuroindoline-containing natural products, we designed an oxidative coupling between phenol and N-acetyl indoles. This straightforward and direct radical process, mediated by 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone and FeCl3 allowed the regioselective synthesis of benzofuro[3,2-b]indolines, whose structure is found in the natural product phalarine.

Management of oral lesions in Lesch-Nyham syndrome.

Lesh-Nyhan Syndrome is a hereditary disorder that affects the way in which the body handles the production and breakdown of purines. One of its main characteristic is self-mutilation. We present a new appliance which allows healing to occur.

Regioselective hydroarylation reactions of C3 electrophilic N-acetylindoles activated by FeCl3: an entry to 3-(hetero)arylindolines.

A method for the direct and rare umpolung of the 3 position of indoles is reported. The activation of N-acetylindole with iron(III) chloride allows the C-H addition of aromatic and heteroaromatic substrates to the C2=C3 double bond of the indole nucleus to generate a quaternary center at C3 and leads regioselectively to 3-arylindolines. Optimization, scope (50 examples), practicability (gram scale, air atmosphere, room temperature), and mechanistic insights of this process are presented.

Predictive accuracy in the neuroprediction of rearrest.

A recently published study by the present authors reported evidence that functional changes in the anterior cingulate cortex within a sample of 96 criminal offenders who were engaged in a Go/No-Go impulse control task significantly predicted their rearrest following release from prison. In an extended analysis, we use discrimination and calibration techniques to test the accuracy of these predictions relative to more traditional models and their ability to generalize to new observations in both full and reduced models. Modest to strong discrimination and calibration accuracy were found, providing additional support for the utility of neurobiological measures in predicting rearrest.

Revisiting a universal airborne light detection and ranging approach for tropical forest carbon mapping: scaling-up from tree to stand to landscape.

Airborne laser scanning provides continuous coverage mapping of forest canopy height and thereby is a powerful tool to scale-up above-ground biomass (AGB) estimates from stand to landscape. A critical first step is the selection of the plot variables which can be related to light detection and ranging (LiDAR) statistics. A universal approach was previously proposed which combines local and regional estimates of basal area (BA) and wood density with LiDAR-derived canopy height to map carbon at a regional scale (Asner et al.

Psychopathic traits modulate brain responses to drug cues in incarcerated offenders.

Recent neuroscientific evidence indicates that psychopathy is associated with abnormal function and structure in limbic and paralimbic areas. Psychopathy and substance use disorders are highly comorbid, but clinical experience suggests that psychopaths abuse drugs for different reasons than non-psychopaths, and that psychopaths do not typically experience withdrawal and craving upon becoming incarcerated. These neurobiological abnormalities may be related to psychopaths' different motivations for-and symptoms of-drug use.

Toll-like receptor 4-mediated endoplasmic reticulum stress in intestinal crypts induces necrotizing enterocolitis.

The cellular cues that regulate the apoptosis of intestinal stem cells (ISCs) remain incompletely understood, yet may play a role in diseases characterized by ISC loss including necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) was recently found to be expressed on ISCs, where its activation leads to ISC apoptosis through mechanisms that remain incompletely explained. We now hypothesize that TLR4 induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress within ISCs, leading to their apoptosis in NEC pathogenesis, and that high ER stress within the premature intestine predisposes to NEC development.

A novel method for bone area measurement provides new insights into osteoarthritis and its progression.

Background: Modern image analysis enables the accurate quantification of knee osteoarthritis (OA) bone using MRI. We hypothesised that three-dimensional changes in bone would be characteristic of OA and provide a responsive measure of progression.

Methods: 1312 participants with radiographic knee OA, and 885 non-OA controls with MRIs at baseline, 1, 2 and 4 years were selected from the NIH Osteoarthritis Initiative.

X-ray phase contrast imaging and noise evaluation using a single phase grating interferometer.

In this paper we present some quantitative measurements of X-ray phase contrast images and noise evaluation obtained with a recent grating based X-ray phase contrast interferometer. This device is built using a single phase grating and a large broadband X-ray source. It was calibrated using a reference sample and finally used to perform measurements of a biological fossil: a mosquito trapped in amber.

Impact of Tesamorelin, a Growth Hormone-Releasing Factor (GRF) Analogue, on the Pharmacokinetics of Simvastatin and Ritonavir in Healthy Volunteers.

The potential impact of tesamorelin on CYP3A activity was investigated by examining its effect on the pharmacokinetics of simvastatin and ritonavir. In two randomized, two-way crossover studies, subjects were administered 2 mg tesamorelin on Days 1-7 with 80 mg simvastatin or 100 mg ritonavir co-administered on Day 6 (Treatment A), and a single dose of simvastatin or ritonavir alone on Day 6 (Treatment B). Pharmacokinetic samples were collected on Day 6 to measure simvastatin, ritonavir and tesamorelin plasma concentrations.

Stereodivergent synthesis of piperidine alkaloids by ring-rearrangement metathesis/reductive lactam alkylation of nitroso Diels-Alder cycloadducts.

A general methodology for the stereoselective synthesis of 2-(2-hydroxyalkyl)piperidine alkaloids by ring-rearrangement metathesis of nitroso Diels-Alder cycloadducts is reported. The approach is illustrated by the formal synthesis of porantheridine and the total synthesis of andrachcinidine through a diastereodivergent allylation of an N-alkoxy bicyclic lactam. The asymmetric synthesis of the latter alkaloid provides new insights into the configurational stability of cycloadducts between chloronitroso reagents and cyclopentadiene.

Magnetic resonance imaging-based three-dimensional bone shape of the knee predicts onset of knee osteoarthritis: data from the osteoarthritis initiative.

Objective: To examine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based 3-dimensional (3-D) bone shape predicts the onset of radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Methods: We conducted a case-control study using data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative by identifying knees that developed incident tibiofemoral radiographic knee OA (case knees) during followup, and matching them each to 2 random control knees. Using knee MRIs, we performed active appearance modeling of the femur, tibia, and patella and linear discriminant analysis to identify vectors that best classified knees with OA versus those without OA.

Neuroprediction of future rearrest.

Identification of factors that predict recurrent antisocial behavior is integral to the social sciences, criminal justice procedures, and the effective treatment of high-risk individuals. Here we show that error-related brain activity elicited during performance of an inhibitory task prospectively predicted subsequent rearrest among adult offenders within 4 y of release (N = 96). The odds that an offender with relatively low anterior cingulate activity would be rearrested were approximately double that of an offender with high activity in this region, holding constant other observed risk factors.

Synthesis of oxaspirannic building blocks by regioselective nitroso-Diels-Alder reactions.

Spirocyclic structures: Nitroso-Diels-Alder reactions of 1,3-disubstituted cyclohexadienes were found to be regiodivergent, depending on the nitroso derivative used. Cycloaddition with Wightman's chloronitroso derivative was totally regio- and stereoselective. This methodology was applied to the synthesis of heterospiranic frameworks after N-O bond cleavage and cyclization (see scheme; Boc=tert-butoxycarbonyl, Tf=trifluoromethanesulfonyl).

Metal-dielectric bi-atomic structure for angular-tolerant spectral filtering.

We theoretically study metal-dielectric structures made of bi-atomic metallic gratings coupled to a guided-mode dielectric resonator. The bi-atomic pattern grating allows tailoring of the Fourier spectrum of the inverse grating permittivity in order to adapt the frequency gap and obtain a flat dispersion band over a wide angular range. A significant enhancement (two-fold) of the angular tolerance as compared to a simply periodic structure is obtained.
