Distribution of zinc ions from orthophosphate cements at the cement-tooth interface in fixed dental prosthesis.

Cast metal prostheses are considered to be one of the best ways to restore the morphology and function of missing teeth. However, the success of fixed prosthesis therapy is mainly to be judged on its durability. It is therefore important to know how cemented prostheses behave in the mouth.

Differential catabolic fate of neuromedin N and neurotensin in the canine intestinal mucosa.

We have established the peptidase content of a P2 fraction (enriched in synaptosomes) and plasma membranes prepared from canine intestinal mucosa. Fourteen exo- and endopeptidases were assayed with fluorimetric or chromogenic substrates and identified by means of specific peptidase inhibitors. Post-proline dipeptidyl aminopeptidase IV, aminopeptidase M, and carboxypeptidase A were the most abundant exopeptidases, while aminopeptidases A and B, dipeptidyl aminopeptidase, pyroglutamyl peptide hydrolase I, and carboxypeptidase B displayed little, if any, activity.

Osteotomy for osteoarthritis of the hip. A survivorship analysis.

We have reviewed 368 osteotomies carried out for osteoarthritis of the hip at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre. Survivorship analysis showed that 10 years after osteotomy 47% had required no further surgery, and even after 20 years 23% had still not had a hip replacement. Hips with moderate arthritic change showed significantly better results than those with more severe degeneration.

The effects of withholding feed and water on carcass shrinkage and meat quality in beef cattle.

Eighty beef crossbred steers with an average weight of 493 kg (4·66 kg SD) were allocated at random to one of five treatments to assess the effects of withholding feed and water on carcass shrinkage and meat quality. The five treatments were: slaughter from the feedlot (T1); and 12, 24, 36 and 48 h periods without feed and water prior to slaughter (T2-5).Weights were taken of the live animal and the carcass to monitor shrinkage along with relevant meat quality measurements.

Review of cannabinoids and their antiemetic effectiveness.

Marijuana has been used for over 2 centuries. Its major psychoactive constituent, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was isolated in 1964 and first used to control nausea and vomiting during chemotherapy in the 1970s. THC has cardiovascular, pulmonary and endocrinological effects as well as actions on the central nervous system.

[Vascular perfusion of an intestinal segment in the catfish (Ictalurus melas, R): demonstration of the vasoactive effects of mammalian VIP and of gastrointestinal extracts from teleost fish].

Through the middle mesenteric artery and the hepatic portal vein it is possible to perfuse specifically a small part of the catfish midgut. Using a tested VIP extraction procedure it is shown that trout and catfish extracts of oesophagus, stomach, midgut and hindgut induce a vasodilation similar to that of porcine VIP. The importance of the vasodilatory response depends on the level of perfused VIP and extracted tissue.

Studies on 1-beta-D-arabinofuranosyl cytosine-resistant mutants of Chinese hamster fibroblasts: III. Joint resistance to arabinofuranosyl cytosine and to excess thymidine--a semidominant manifestation of deoxycytidine triphosphate pool expansion.

Variants isolated from mutagenized Chinese hamster fibroblasts by a single cycle of exposure to ara-C distributed into two classes: (1) deoxycytidine (dC) kinase deficient clones with a high level of resistance, this phenotype was recessive in hybrids; and (2) clones exhibiting joint resistance to thymidine (dT) and to "low" ara-C concentration, this phenotype was accounted for by an increased dCTP pool. The incorporation of exogenous dC into macromolecules was markedly altered in these variants. In hybrids, the phenotype of joint resistance to dT and ara-C was semidominant.

Some marital-sexual concomitants of carcinoma of the cervix.

The responses of 50 cervical cancer patients to questions about marital and sexual adjustment are discussed. The subjects were predominantly poor, white women from rural areas or small towns. They had to travel 50 to 150 miles to a hospital where half were treated by radiotherapy and half by surgery.

Plasma cerebrosides in stroke and multiple sclerosis.

This investigation was conducted to determine whether or not plasma galactosyl ceramides were elevated in patients with stroke and multiple sclerosis, and to determine glycosyl ceramide concentrations in older, normal subjects. It was hypothesized that central nervous system destruction, like that which occurs in stroke or in the demyelination characteristic of multiple sclerosis, might be reflected by changes in plasma glycosyl ceramides, specifically by an increased percentage of galactosyl ceramide. Glycosyl ceramides were analyzed in duplicate 10 ml aliquots of plasma from each of seven patients with stroke, five patients with multiple sclerosis and five control subjects age-matched with stroke patients.
