After menopause, women have an increased risk of developing android-type obesity, IR, and DM2.

A brief and updated introduction to the neuroendocrine system of crustaceans.

The neuroendocrine system of crustaceans is complex and regulates many processes, such as development, growth, reproduction, osmoregulation, behavior, and metabolism. Once stimulated, crustaceans' neuroendocrine tissues modulate the release of monoamines, ecdysteroids, and neuropeptides that can act as hormones or neurotransmitters. Over a few decades, research has unraveled some mechanisms governing these processes, substantially contributing to understanding crustacean physiology.

Effects of Diets Based on Hydrolyzed Chicken Liver and Different Protein Concentrations on the Formation and Deamination of Biogenic Amines and Total Antioxidant Capacity of Dogs.

Biogenic amines are synthesized through the bacterial decarboxylation of amino acids, commonly found in high levels in animal by-product meals due to spoilage. Furthermore, biogenic amines and other metabolites can be produced by the fermentation of proteins in the hindgut according to the protein source and concentration of crude protein (CP) in the diet. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate two protein sources (poultry by-product meal (PBPM) and hydrolyzed chicken liver powder (HCLP)) and three CP concentrations (24, 32, and 40%) and their effects on the consumption and fecal excretion of biogenic amines, plasma monoamine oxidase (MAO) and diamine oxidase (DAO) activities, and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of healthy adult dogs after 30 days of feeding the experimental diets.

The impact of chasing stress on the metabolism of the Atlantic Ghost Crab Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius, 1787).

Ocypode quadrata, a Ghost crab species found along the western Atlantic coast, is considered a bioindicator of anthropogenic impact on sandy beaches. Ghost Crabbing, a touristic activity in which ghost crabs are chased just for fun, is a potentially threatening activity for this crab. In crustaceans, metabolites such as glucose and lactate, and the gene expression of crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) and heat shock proteins (HSPs) increase when the animals are exposed to several types of stress, including alterations in temperature, salinity, or exposure to xenobiotics.

Acute effects of a single moderate-intensity exercise bout performed in fast or fed states on cell metabolism and signaling: Comparison between lean and obese rats.

Aims: Although the benefits of exercise can be potentiated by fasting in healthy subjects, few studies evaluated the effects of this intervention on the metabolism of obese subjects. This study investigated the immediate effects of a single moderate-intensity exercise bout performed in fast or fed states on the metabolism of gastrocnemius and soleus of lean and obese rats.

Main Methods: Male rats received a high-fat diet (HFD) for twelve weeks to induce obesity or were fed standard diet (SD).

Effects of tributyltin (TBT) on the intermediate metabolism of the crab Callinectes sapidus.

This study investigated if the exposure to tributyltin (TBT), a chemical used worldwide in boat antifouling paints, could result in metabolic disturbances in the blue crab Callinectes sapidus. After the exposure to TBT 100 or 1000 ng.L for 48 and 96 h, hemolymph and tissues were collected to determine the concentration of metabolites and lipid peroxidation.

Physiological and pharmacological actions of glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in domestic animals.

Analogues of glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and other drugs that increase this peptide half-life are used worldwide in human medicine to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity. These molecules can increase insulin release and satiety, interesting effects that could also be useful in the treatment of domestic animals pathologies, however their use in veterinary medicine are still limited. Considering the increasing incidence of DM and obesity in cats and dogs, the aim of this review is to summarize the available information about the physiological and pharmacological actions of GLP-1 in domestic animals and discuss about its potential applications in veterinary medicine.

Management of Pulp Canal Obliteration-Systematic Review of Case Reports.

: This systematic review aimed to assess the literature focusing on the clinical management of traumatized teeth with Pulp Canal Obliteration (PCO) and propose an updated clinical decision-making algorithm. The present review follows the PRISMA guidelines and was registered on PROSPERO database (CRD42020200656). : An electronic search strategy was performed in Pubmed, EBSCOhost and LILACS from inception to March 2021.

Metabolic and Molecular Subacute Effects of a Single Moderate-Intensity Exercise Bout, Performed in the Fasted State, in Obese Male Rats.

: Obesity represents a major global public health problem. Its etiology is multifactorial and includes poor dietary habits, such as hypercaloric and hyperlipidic diets (HFDs), physical inactivity, and genetic factors. Regular exercise is, per se, a tool for the treatment and prevention of obesity, and recent studies suggest that the beneficial effects of exercise can be potentiated by the fasting state, thus potentially promoting additional effects.

Liraglutide treatment counteracts alterations in adipose tissue metabolism induced by orchiectomy in rats.

Aims: The reduction in androgens serum concentration is a physiological condition that accompanies age advancement but can also occur because of prostate cancer and gender affirming treatment or pathological conditions such as functional hypogonadism. However, androgen deficiency is related to a higher risk of developing metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Considering that glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) analogs are increasingly used in the treatment of T2DM, we investigated if liraglutide could also attenuate the metabolic changes caused by orchiectomy in rats.

Liraglutide improves lipid and carbohydrate metabolism of ovariectomized rats.

Considering that post-menopausal women and ovariectomized rodents develop obesity associated with increased visceral fat, this study was developed to investigate if liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) analogue, could improve the metabolism of estrogen (E2) deficient females. Wistar rats were ovariectomized (OVX), and subdivided in four groups: sham saline, sham liraglutide, OVX saline, and OVX liraglutide. After sixty days, metabolic parameters of blood, heart, liver, brown (BAT) and white adipose tissue (WAT) visceral depots, and, heart oxidative homeostasis, were evaluated.

Microtensile Bond Strength of Three Different Adhesive Systems to Primary Enamel: An In Vitro Study.

The burrowing crab Neohelice granulata is a key omnivorous species in intertidal areas along the southwestern Atlantic from southern Brazil to northern Argentinean Patagonia. This crab is adapted to starvation and can endure natural periods of food deprivation. The metabolic adjustments during starvation depend on the type of diet the crabs were fed previously.

Randomized clinical trial of five adhesive systems in occlusal restorations: One-year results.

This randomized clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of five different adhesive systems in the restoration of occlusal cavities after one year of function. Two etch-and-rinse (Optibond™FL, Prime&BondNT™) and three self-etch (Clearfil™SE Bond, XenoIII, XenoV) adhesive systems were evaluated on 159 occlusal restorations, incrementally filled with a microhybrid composite resin. Restorations were assessed using the FDI criteria at baseline, 6 months and 1 year.

Polymerization Shrinkage Evaluation of Restorative Resin-Based Composites Using Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors.

The purpose of this study was to compare the linear polymerization shrinkage of different restorative resin-based composites (RBCs) using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. Five RBCs were evaluated: Zirconfill (ZFL); Aura Bulk-Fill (ABF); Tetric N-Ceram Bulk-Fill (TBF); Filtek Bulk-Fill (FBF); and Admira Fusion-Ormocer (ADF). Ten samples per resin were produced in standardized custom-made half-gutter silicone molds.

Six-Month Color Stability Assessment of Two Calcium Silicate-Based Cements Used in Regenerative Endodontic Procedures.

Aim: The purpose of the present study is to assess the color stability of two calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs) used in regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs).

Methods: A total of 40 acrylic single-rooted transparent teeth, with immature apex, were used. Root canals were filled up to 3 mm below the level of the cementoenamel junction, with either saline solution (Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA)/saline and Biodentine/saline) or blood (MTA/blood and Biodentine/blood).

Metabolic effects of epinephrine on the crab Neohelice granulata.

Although widely known for their involvement in the control of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism of vertebrates, the participation of catecholamines (CAs) in the metabolism of invertebrates is less understood. This study was designed to identify the physiological role of Epinephrine (E) in the intermediary metabolism of the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata and how E regulates the metabolism in crabs fed with a high-carbohydrate (HC) or a high-protein (HP) diet. To answer these questions, we evaluated in vivo the effects of E injections on glucose and triglycerides in the hemolymph and tissue glycogen levels of crabs fed with HC or HP diet.

Extent of rescue of F508del-CFTR function by VX-809 and VX-770 in human nasal epithelial cells correlates with SNP rs7512462 in SLC26A9 gene in F508del/F508del Cystic Fibrosis patients.

Background: We analyzed the CFTR response to VX-809/VX-770 drugs in conditionally reprogrammed cells (CRC) of human nasal epithelium (HNE) from F508del/F508del patients based on SNP rs7512462 in the Solute Carrier Family 26, Member 9 (SLC26A9; MIM: 608481) gene.

Methods: The I measurements of primary nasal epithelial cells from F508del/F508del patients (n = 12) for CFTR function were performed in micro Ussing chambers and compared with non-CF controls (n = 2). Data were analyzed according to the rs7512462 genotype which were determined by real-time PCR.

Pulp Temperature Rise Induced by Light-Emitting Diode Light-Curing Units Using an Ex Vivo Model.

The aim of this research was to compare the pulp temperature (PT) rise induced by four light-emitting diode light-curing units (LED LCUs) (Bluephase 20i, Demi Ultra, SPEC 3, and Valo) in different curing modes. Immediately after extraction, the pulp chamber of 11 premolars was accessed from the palatal cervical third of the crown for insertion of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors for temperature measurement and kept in a 37.0° water bath.

Does Delayed Restoration Improve Shear Bond Strength of Different Restorative Protocols to Calcium Silicate-Based Cements?

The purpose of the present study was to assess the proper time to perform a restoration (immediately or delayed) after placement of two calcium silicate-based cements (CSCs) and to test the performance of two different restorative protocols regarding shear bond strength (SBS). Seventy-five acrylic blocks were randomly divided into five groups ( = 15). Specimens were filled with either ProRoot MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental) or Biodentine (Septodont).

Redox and metabolic strategies developed by anterior and posterior gills of the crab Neohelice granulata after short periods of hypo- or hyper-osmotic stress.

The aim of this study was to identify the response pattern of redox balance, Na/KATPase activity and HSP70 expression in the posterior and anterior gills of the crab Neohelice granulata submitted to hypo- or hyper-osmotic stress for 1 h and 6 h. After 1 h of either type of osmotic stress, there was an increase in catalase activity, but a decrease in GSSG/GSH ratio (oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio) and Na/KATPase activity in both gill sets. HO levels decreased only in the posterior gills.

Effects of Organotins on Crustaceans: Update and Perspectives.

Organotins (OTs) are considered some of the most toxic chemicals introduced into aquatic environments by anthropogenic activities. They are widely used for agricultural and industrial purposes and as antifouling additives on boat hull's paints. Even though the use of OTs was banned in 2008, elevated levels of OTs can still be detected in aquatic environments.

Validity and reliability of a Portuguese version of the Summated Xerostomia Inventory-5.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to validate and determine the reliability of the Portuguese version of the Summated Xerostomia Inventory.

Background: Many conditions such as head and neck radiation, autoimmune diseases or polypharmacy are characterised by hyposalivation which can affect oral and systemic quality of life. As such, this condition must be assessed, and the English version of the Xerostomia Inventory has been increasingly used to determine the severity of dry mouth perception.
