Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNB) and frozen section (FS) may help to validate pre- and intraoperatively dignity of thyroid nodules, establishing the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. The role of frozen section is uncertain. Some authors suggest routine performance, some authors suggest selective use (in case of unclear FNB), some authors do not support the use of FS.

We present the story of a 49-year-old woman operated on because of a cystic lesion formed around a swab which was left in the abdominal cavity during open cholecystectomy ten years ago. We did not realise the nature of the lesion before the operation or by examination during the operation.
