Article Synopsis
  • Cancer is a major threat to both humans and dogs, often progressing quickly in canines, highlighting the need for early detection methods.!
  • Researchers tested earwax (cerumen) as a potential source of cancer biomarkers by analyzing samples from dogs with tumors and healthy dogs using advanced gas chromatography techniques.!
  • Their findings identified 18 volatile metabolites that can accurately distinguish between dogs with tumors and healthy ones, achieving a diagnostic accuracy of 95%, making this method a promising non-invasive option for veterinary cancer diagnosis.!

Several coleopterans of the Scarabaeidae family (Pleurosticti) are reported as important pests of agricultural crops, but little information on their biology is available. We describe our observations on the biology of adult Cyclocephala verticalis Burmeister collected with light traps from January, 2006 to December, 2007, in Aquidauana, MS, Brasil. Field collected adults were taken to the laboratory and kept in plastic containers containing soil and seedlings of Brachiaria decumbens under controlled conditions (26 +/- 1 masculineC with 12h of photophase).

The fragmentation of six plumeran indole alkaloids (PIAs) previously isolated from Aspidosperma spruceanum has been investigated by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) in the positive ion mode. The fragmentation pathways have been established on the basis of MS/MS experiments using fragment ions generated in-source and deuterium-labeled alkaloids as precursor ions and on the basis of accurate mass measurements. Our results demonstrated that the fragmentation routes observed for the protonated PIAs are essentially derived from a pericyclic reaction and from the opening of rings D and E, followed by 1,4-hydrogen rearrangements.

The objective of the present work was to describe a visceral case of leishmaniasis in a dog from Caldas Novas, GO, region until then considered as a disease free area. The animal, attended in the Veterinarian Hospital of the Federal University of Goiás, presented loss of weight, alopecic area of irregular format at the nasal back, onicogrifosis, atrophy of the heads muscles and failure of the right popliteus lymphonode. For the laboratorial diagnosis, samples were collected by biopsy from the complete skin of the auricular region, by punsion from the popliteus lymphonode for preparation of Giemsa stained blades and 5 mL of the blood were also collected for serum diagnosis.

Objectives: Acute pancreatitis is associated with substantial alterations of the immunologic host response which has been claimed to promote remote organ dysfunction, septic complications, and mortality. Treatment with immunomodulating substances has been subject of few experimental studies with still conflicting results.

Methods: We used the taurocholate-induced model of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in rats which were assigned to different treatment regimen: isotonic saline (SAP-S) for nontreated controls, recombinant rat interferon-gamma for immunostimulation (SAP-IFN-gamma), and FK506 for immunosuppression (SAP-FK506).

Various chemokine receptors, namely CXCR4, CCR6 and CCR7, have recently been shown to be involved in the regulation of metastasis in malignant tumors. However, little is known about the role of these receptors in promoting tumor metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC) to the primary site of CRC metastasis in the liver. To investigate this issue, we analyzed the expression of the chemokine receptors CXCR4, CCR6 and CCR7 in colorectal tumors and colorectal liver metastases.

Objectives: Immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine A, mycophenolate mofetil, tacrolimus, and the immunosuppressive agent sirolimus are used effectively to prevent immunologic rejection after solid-organ transplantation. The most serious complication among patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy is the risk of developing cancer. The question is whether the drugs used have mutagenic properties and so contribute to increased cancer risk.

Comment on "Control of hyperchaos".

Phys Rev E Stat Nonlin Soft Matter Phys

November 2003

In this Comment we show that the adaptive adjustment mechanism proposed by Shouliang, Shaoqing, and Hengqiang [Phys. Rev. E 64, 056212 (2001)] does not ensure that the feedback system will converge to the desired orbit as the real system is, in general, not known.
