Knowledge of the sources of variation, including those specific to a lab such as raters, specific procedures followed including instruction, image analysis software, image viewing time, etc., that affect the outcome of development and validation of SADs can help improve standard operating practice of these assessment aids.

In an attempt to decrease central side effects associated with the use of opioids, some strategies have been developed by targeting peripheral opioid receptors. In this context, kappa receptors are of major interest, since, in contrast to other opioid receptors, their activation is not associated with potent peripheral side effects. We have recently demonstrated that local activation of kappa opioid receptors significantly decreases formalin-induced temporomandibular joint nociception; however, whether it also decreases temporomandibular joint inflammation is not known.

Phytic acid occurs in foods derived from plants. We have investigated the possibility that phytic acid and stannous fluoride are capable of altering the physiological properties (osmotic fragility) and morphological properties of red blood cells (RBC). Osmotic fragility was unchanged by the presence of phytic acid and stannous fluoride in the studied concentrations, but RBC morphology was modified in the presence of the studied substances.
