Objective: To assess the opinion, practices, and challenges of international key opinion leaders about two minimal invasive surgical techniques in supraglottic laryngeal tumours: transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) and the transoral robotic surgery (TORS).
Methods: Design of a questionnaire composed of seven sections and fifty questions covering descriptive data of participants, practitioners experience procedural sequences, considerations related to airways, feeding, and voice, intraoperative haemorrhage, postoperative management, and a comparative analysis of TLM and TORS in treating supraglottic laryngeal cancer.
Results: A total of 27 head and neck surgeons replied to the survey.
Invasive species with native ranges spanning strong environmental gradients are well suited for examining the roles of selection and population history in rapid adaptation to new habitats, providing insight into potential evolutionary responses to climate change. The Atlantic oyster drill (Urosalpinx cinerea) is a marine snail whose native range spans the strongest coastal latitudinal temperature gradient in the world, with invasive populations established on the US Pacific coast. Here, we leverage this system using genome-wide SNPs and environmental data to examine invasion history and identify genotype-environment associations indicative of local adaptation across the native range, and then assess evidence for allelic frequency shifts that would signal rapid adaptation within invasive populations.

Data Sources: A search of PubMed, Ovid Medline, Embase, Cochrane database, Web of Science and CINAHL was conducted in December 2023 for studies comparing DCC to ICC in preterm twin neonates.
Study Eligibility Criteria: Studies were deemed eligible if they included preterm twin neonates (< 37 weeks of gestation), compared delayed (≥ 30 seconds) vs early (<30 seconds) umbilical cord clamping at delivery and described at least one outcome of interest.
Objective: Guidelines recommending deferred cord clamping (DCC), delaying cord clamping for at least 30 seconds post-birth, have shown significant benefits in preterm singleton births. However, evidence supporting DCC in twins is scarce due to limited trial data, leading to practice variations. This study aims to assess current reported DCC practices for twin pregnancies in tertiary hospitals across Canada.

Precluding advances in more tailored and efficacious treatments for depression is the lack of reliable biomarkers. While depression is linked to elevations in inflammatory immune system functioning, this relationship is not evident among all individuals with depression and may vary based on symptom subtypes and/or sex.

When thermal stress exceeds organismal capacity to maintain homeostasis, organism survival becomes time-limited and can result in mass mortality events. Current methods of detecting and categorizing MHWs rely on statistical analysis of historic climatology and do not consider biological effects as a basis of MHW severity.

Methods: A retrospective multicenter study (n = 138) in a previously irradiated area between 2009 and 2020.
In this study, we developed an efficient co-conversion marker, using the conserved gene, to facilitate creation and detection of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated targeted genomic changes in an emerging male/female nematode model system, .

Understanding how such disparate activities of RAD54 paralogs align with their biological roles is an ongoing challenge. Here we investigate the in vivo functions of Caenorhabditis elegans RAD54 paralogs RAD-54.

In spermatocytes, differences exist between cytologically-detected and genetically-detected double crossover rates. Here, we examine nascent crossovers using both GFP- and OLLAS-tagged COSA-1.

This study aimed to: (1) determine the impact of a local restrictive transfusion protocol on the number of platelet transfusions and donor exposure; (2) compare platelet-transfusion determinants and justifications before and after its implementation.
Study Design And Methods: Prospective observational cohort chart-review study comparing all neonates consecutively admitted to the NICU during two 5-months periods: 2013 (before; N = 401) versus 2021 (after; N = 402).
The contribution of the microbiota to induce gastrointestinal inflammation is hypothesized to be a key component of alpha-synuclein (aSyn) aggregation within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract in the pathological progression of Parkinson's disease (PD). The function of the GI tract is governed by a system of neurons that form part of the enteric nervous system (ENS). The ENS hosts 100-500 million nerve cells within two thin layers lining the GI tract.

Failure to complete meiotic DSB repair leads to 100% lethality of embryos produced by null mutant mothers.

HIM-19 is an important factor that regulates meiotic prophase progression in , but its molecular function(s) and localization have remained unclear. We show here that tagged HIM-19 expressed from its endogenous locus exhibits dynamic localization in germ cell nuclei that support its proposed role as a regulator of the CHK-2 protein kinase.

Here, we show that Caenorhabditis elegans cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK-2) partners with cyclin-like protein COSA-1 to promote crossover formation by promoting conversion of meiotic double-strand breaks into crossover–specific recombination intermediates. Further, we identify MutSγ component MSH-5 as a CDK-2 phosphorylation target.

We aimed to systematically evaluate the impact of forgoing routine intubation and GA during primary bedside reduction and closure of gastroschisis.
Methods: The primary outcome was closure success.
Purpose: The aim of the survey was to define the indications for preventive tracheostomy in transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for head and neck cancers.
Methods: From October 2019 to January 2020, an online questionnaire was e-mailed to French surgical ENT teams with considerable experience of the TORS procedure (Gettec group). A descriptive analysis of the answers was performed.
Purpose: Standardized protocols have been shown to improve outcomes in several pediatric surgical conditions. We implemented a multi-disciplinary gastroschisis practice bundle at our institution in 2013. We sought to evaluate its impact on closure type and early clinical outcomes.

Plasticity in heat tolerance, which includes acclimation or hardening, occurs when prior exposure to a warmer temperature changes an organism's upper thermal limit. The capacity for thermal acclimation could provide protection against warming, but prior work has found few generalizable patterns to explain variation in this trait.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMeiotic crossover formation requires the activity of multiple pro-crossover factors, including the MutSγ complex and the cyclin-related protein COSA-1, that become concentrated together at the sites of crossover recombination intermediates. Here we show that a transgene insertion expressing GFP::COSA-1 can suppress the crossover deficit caused by a partial reduction in MutSγ function. Our data, combined with previous findings, support a model in which COSA-1 promotes crossover formation, at least in part, through positive regulation of MutSγ function.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFMeiotic recombination plays dual roles in the evolution and stable inheritance of genomes: Recombination promotes genetic diversity by reassorting variants, and it establishes temporary connections between pairs of homologous chromosomes that ensure their future segregation. Meiotic recombination is initiated by generation of double-strand DNA breaks (DSBs) by the conserved topoisomerase-like protein Spo11. Despite strong conservation of Spo11 across eukaryotic kingdoms, auxiliary complexes that interact with Spo11 complexes to promote DSB formation are poorly conserved.

However, our mechanistic understanding of how the environment shapes trait variation remains poor. Here, we used common garden experiments to quantify thermal performance in eight populations of the marine snail across thermal gradients on the Atlantic and the Pacific coasts of North America.
