Objective: Determine the risk of autoimmune disease in research-identified cases of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared with referents using a longitudinal, population-based birth cohort.

Methods: ASD incident cases were identified from a population-based birth cohort of 31,220 individuals. Inclusive ASD definition based on DSM-IV-TR autistic disorder, Asperger syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified, was used to determine ASD cases.

Prevalence of Depression Among Adults With Diabetes Mellitus and the Relationship Between Improvement in Depressive Symptoms and Glycemic Control.

Introduction: Depression is one of many comorbid conditions associated with diabetes. The rationale for this study is to examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms in adults with diabetes mellitus type II. Furthermore, the association between depressive symptoms and glycemic control will also be analyzed.

Radiation therapy, one of the most effective therapies to treat cancer, is highly toxic to healthy tissue. The delivery of radiation at ultra-high dose rates, FLASH radiation therapy (FLASH), has been shown to maintain therapeutic anti-tumor efficacy while sparing normal tissues compared to conventional dose rate irradiation (CONV). Though promising, these studies have been limited mainly to murine models.

Background: Studies of the molecular mechanisms of nerve regeneration have led to the discovery of several proteins that are induced during successful nerve regeneration. RICH proteins were identified as proteins induced during the regeneration of the optic nerve of teleost fish. These proteins are 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide, 3'-phosphodiesterases that can bind to cellular membranes through a carboxy-terminal membrane localization domain.

Clinical characterization of human bocavirus 1 infection in infants hospitalized in an intensive care unit for severe acute respiratory tract disease.

Acute respiratory infections represent the leading cause of morbimortality in children and viruses are the main etiological agents. Here we describe the clinical characteristics and evolution of infants admitted to intensive care unit with severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) due to Human Bocavirus 1 mono-infection in patients without previous comorbidity. We also compared them with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases.

[From production to impacts on health and the environment: an analysis of food systems in Brazil, Colombia and Panama].

The scope of this article is to describe the main components of the food systems of Brazil, Colombia and Panama. It involved a narrative review of the literature from 2000 to 2022, based on the concept of food systems proposed by the Committee on World Food Security. A system of agro-industrial production, monoculture, use of pesticides and exploitation of natural resources predominates in all three countries, and the area occupied by family farmers is reduced.

Upper respiratory tract viral load quantification in COVID-19 patients at hospital admission and its association with disease severity.

Introduction: There are aspects of COVID-19 pathogenesis that are still unknown.

Objective: To determine the relationship between severity, mortality and viral replication in patients with COVID-19.

Methods: Clinical characteristics, severity and mortality of 203 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were analyzed and correlated with viral load (VL) and threshold cycle (TC) at admission; nasopharyngeal swab was obtained.

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) infection occurs with viral genome presence in respiratory secretions (RS) and serum, and therefore both samples can be used for diagnosis. The diagnostic sensitivity of HBoV1 DNA detection in serum and the duration of DNAaemia in severe clinical cases have not been elucidated. To determine HBoV1 DNA in serum and RS of paediatric patients hospitalized for lower acute respiratory infection (LARI) and to analyse the clinical-epidemiological features of positive cases.

Safety and efficacy of sequential balloon dilation prior to ureteral access sheath insertion in nonstented patients undergoing ureteroscopy.

Techniques such as ureteral access sheath placement and balloon dilation are utilized to facilitate ureteroscopy. A retrospective review was performed to evaluate the efficacy and complications from ureteral access sheath (UAS) placement with or without sequential ureteral balloon dilation (SBD) in non-prestented patients who underwent ureteroscopy with UAS with or without SBD for renal or proximal ureteral stones from February 2014 to April 2017. This was a two-surgeon series of 124 patients divided into groups of SBD + UAS or direct UAS placement.

High sensitivity of invertebrate detritivores from tropical streams to different pesticides.

Freshwater organisms are often sensitive to pesticides, but their sensitivity varies across different taxa and with pesticide type and action mode, as shown by multiple acute toxicity tests. Such variability hampers predictions about how freshwater ecosystems may be altered by pesticide toxicity, which is especially critical for understudied areas of the world such as the tropics. Furthermore, there is little information about the sensitivity of some organisms that are key components of stream food webs; this is the case of litter-feeding detritivorous invertebrates, which contribute to the fundamental process of litter decomposition.

Examining the Relationship Between Engagement and Perceived Stress-Related Cognitive Complaints in the Argentinian Working Population.

Stress has a negative impact on cognitive functioning and occupational well-being. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship among perceived stress, cognitive complaints and work engagement in public employees from Córdoba, Argentina. In this cross-sectional study, self-report questionnaires were administered to 240 participants.

Dengue-chikungunya coinfection outbreak in children from Cali, Colombia in 2018-2019.

Objective: To identify the arbovirus involved in febrile cases identified in a pediatric clinic in Cali, Valle del Cauca province, Colombia, and study the clinical characteristics.

Methods: A descriptive, prospective study enrolled 345 febrile children for 12 months in a pediatric clinic. Medical record registers documenting signs and symptoms, and serum samples were analyzed to detect DENV, CHIKV, and ZIKV by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and serology methods.

Introduction: Currently, with the widespread penetration of mobile devices with Internet access, including smartphones, they can allow specific and/or complementary activities in the health field as well as in other commercial sectors.

Aim: This systematic review examined the impact of mHealth-based for cardiovascular research. The specific aims of the systematic review are to (1) classification of the studies according to the type of research (scientific articles and master's and doctoral theses) and (2) relationship of studies with topics associated with cardiovascular diseases.

Agriculture impairs stream ecosystem functioning in a tropical catchment.

The expansion of agriculture is particularly worrying in tropical regions of the world, where native forests are being replaced by crops at alarming rates, with severe consequences for biodiversity and ecosystems. However, there is little information about the potential effects of agriculture on the functioning of tropical streams, which is essential if we are to assess the condition and ecological integrity of these ecosystems. We conducted a litter decomposition experiment in streams within a tropical catchment, which were subjected to different degrees of agricultural influence: low (protected area, PA), medium (buffer area, BA) and high (agricultural area, AA).

Background: The inadequate storage of biopharmaceuticals may result in an ineffective therapeutic response since poor conservation can lead to the emergence of protein aggregates and cause immunogenicity in patients, which can increase the risk of adverse events by inducing the production of anti-drug antibodies. This can also lead to significant economic losses for public health, given the high cost of these medicines. The aim of this study was to verify whether the home storage of biopharmaceuticals dispensed by the Unified Public System was in accordance with the manufacturers' specified standards and whether external variables interfered with the correct home storage.

Background: Hearing results from processes of modulation of the acoustic signal performed by the auditory pathway and cortical activity. Sound detection, location, discrimination, intelligibility in noise and silence require integrity of the auditory system.

Objective: To recognize the auditory variability in competent users and examine the relationship of auditory processing abilities with peripheral sensitivity.

Developing an Interactive Environment Through the Teaching of Mathematics with Small Robots.

The article is the product of the study "Development of innovative resources to improve logical-mathematical skills in primary school, through educational robotics", developed during the 2019 school year in three public schools in the province of Chiriquí, Republic of Panama. The teaching-learning process in students is influenced by aspects inside and outside the classroom, since not all schools have the necessary resources to deliver content or teaching material. The general objective of the project is to design, develop and implement educational robotics to improve logical-mathematical skills aimed at preschool and first grade students in public schools, using programmable educational robots.

Confirmatory factor analyses of the Baylor Revision of the Motivation to Read Survey (B-MRS) with middle school students.

Reading depends on the integration of both cognitive and motivational factors, yet reading motivation has received little attention in the research literature. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Baylor Revision of the Motivation to Read Survey (B-MRS; Watkins & Browning, 2015) with a sample of 731 students in Grades 6-8. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the oblique two-factor structure of the B-MRS, which was invariant across gender, and regression analyses indicated that gender and grade were not significant predictors of reading motivation.
