Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide/peptide histidine isoleucine immunoreactive neuron systems in the basal hypothalamus of the rat with special reference to the portal vasculature: an immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization study.

Using immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, we have analysed the distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) and peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI) in hypothalamus of male and female Sprague-Dawley rats under normal and experimental conditions. In most cases there was a good overlap between the distribution of VIP- and PHI-immunoreactive structures. At the median eminence level precapillary arterioles along its lateral aspect were surrounded by dense networks of VIP/PHI-positive fibers, suggesting that these peptides, via their vasodilatory property, may be involved in control of blood flow through portal vessels.

Effects of central nervous system lesions on the expression of galanin: a comparative in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical study.

We have used in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to study the expression of galanin mRNA and galanin-like immunoreactivity after decortication and lesions of the ventral hippocampus. After decortication the levels of both galanin mRNA and galanin-like immunoreactivity were increased in the dorsal raphe nucleus. In addition, in decorticated rats, but not in controls, galanin mRNA could be seen in dorsal and ventral nuclei of the thalamus and in the remaining parts of the cortex.

Recurrent and fatal haemoptysis caused by an atheromatous abdominal aortic aneurysm.

A 74 year old woman presented with a two month history of recurrent small hemoptyses and died after a subsequent massive haemoptysis. At postmortem examination the source of bleeding was found to be a leaking saccular, atheromatous abdominal aortic aneurysm, which had ruptured through the diaphragm into the lower lobe of the right lung.

Peptides and transmitter enzymes in hypothalamic magnocellular neurons after administration of hyperosmotic stimuli: comparison between messenger RNA and peptide/protein levels.

In situ hybridization histochemistry and indirect immunofluorescence histochemistry were used to study changes in the expression of vasopressin (VP), oxytocin (OXY), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), galanin (GAL), dynorphin (DYN) and cholecystokinin (CCK) in hypothalamic magnocellular neurons of the paraventricular (PVN) and supraoptic (SON) nuclei of rats. After prolonged administration of 2% sodium chloride as drinking water (salt-loading), the treatment increased the levels of VP, OXY, TH, GAL, DYN and CCK mRNA in the PVN and SON. The increase in CCK mRNA was, however, proportionally higher in the PVN than in the SON.

A comparison of no medication versus methyldopa or labetalol in chronic hypertension during pregnancy.

Three hundred women with mild chronic hypertension at 6 to 13 weeks' gestation were randomly allocated to receive either methyldopa or labetalol or be in the control group. Thirty-seven women (12%) were excluded for various reasons. Of the remaining 263 patients, 90 received no drug, 87 received methyldopa, and 86 received labetalol.

The purpose of this study is to report short-term pregnancy outcome, subsequent pregnancy outcome, and remote prognosis (follow-up from 0.3 to 9.8 years) in 31 cases complicated by acute renal failure.

Expression of beta-nerve growth factor receptor mRNA in Sertoli cells downregulated by testosterone.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is synthesized in male germ cells. The NGF receptor (NGFR) mRNA was found in the Sertoli cells of rat testis. Hypophysectomy increased both NGFR mRNA in testis and the number of NGFR hybridizing cells in seminiferous tubules.

The interaction of intrathecally (i.t.) applied galanin (GAL) with substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), somatostatin (SOM) and C-fibre conditioning stimulation (CS) with regard to their effects on the spinal nociceptive flexor reflex was studied in decerebrate, spinalized, unanaesthetized rats with intact or sectioned sciatic nerves.

Influence of adenosine analogs on morphine tolerance and dependence in mice.

A number of adenosine agonists were investigated for possible actions on tolerance to morphine withdrawal in mice. The induction of tolerance to a sustained release preparation of morphine was assessed by measuring the analgesic effect induced by a test dose of the drug. The concomitant treatment with L- and D-phenylisopropyl adenosine, (L- and D-PIA), cyclopentyladenosine (CPA) or chloroadenosine (CADO) during the period of morphine absorption did not alter the induction of the process.

Localization of chemical messengers in magnocellular neurons of the hypothalamic supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei: an immunohistochemical study using experimental manipulations.

Indirect immunofluorescence histochemistry was used to investigate the distribution and extent of co-localization of chemical messengers in magnocellular neurons of the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei. In order to increase the number of neurons immunoreactive to the antisera used, experimental manipulations were employed. The homozygous Brattleboro (diabetes insipidus) rat was also investigated.

Neuropeptide gene expression in hypothalamic magnocellular neurons of normal and hypophysectomized rats: a combined immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization study.

Hypothalamic magnocellular neurons of the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei contain several peptides and non-peptide putative neurotransmitters co-existing with vasopressin and oxytocin. However, the functional role of these substances is still unknown. In the present paper the temporal course of changes in the expression of vasopressin, oxytocin, galanin, cholecystokinin, dynorphin and tyrosine hydroxylase in magnocellular hypothalamic neurons of rats subjected to hypophysectomy was examined.

Expression of c-Fos immunoreactivity in transmitter-characterized neurons after stress.

The effect of intracerebroventricular injection of the mitosis inhibitor colchicine and of immobilization stress, subcutaneous injection of capsaicin, and intraperitoneal injection of hypertonic salt solution on expression of c-Fos-like immunoreactivity was studied in the rat brain with immunohistochemistry. All the procedures induced c-Fos immunoreactivity in parvocellular neurons of the paraventricular nucleus, and many of these neurons also contained corticotropin-releasing factor immunoreactivity. c-Fos immunoreactivity was also observed, for example, in subpopulations of neurons in the locus coeruleus, the ventrolateral medulla oblongata, and the nucleus tractus solitarii.

The effect of intrathecal galanin on the flexor reflex in rat: increased depression after sciatic nerve section.

The effect of intrathecal galanin (GAL) on the hamstring flexor reflex to sural nerve stimulation was compared in rats with intact and unilaterally sectioned sciatic nerves. GAL had a biphasic effect on the flexor reflex in rats with intact nerves, including facilitation, facilitation followed by depression and pure depression, in a dose-dependent manner. In axotomized rats, the depressive effect of GAL was significantly increased, occurring at lower drug concentrations.

The mentor pollen phenomenon in poplars: a new concept.

The mentor effect has been investigated in poplars. Attempts to overcome interspecific incompatibility are analysed by pollen germination and pollen tube behaviour in situ, both for compatible and incompatible crosses. We have demonstrated that following the mixed pollination, the two pollen sets interact at different levels of the progamic phase.

Magnesium supplementation during pregnancy: a double-blind randomized controlled clinical trial.

Four hundred young normotensive primigravid women between 13 and 24 weeks' gestation were randomly allocated to one of two study groups. One group received placebo tablets and the other group received 365 mg of elemental magnesium daily (as magnesium aspartate hydrochloride). Three hundred seventy-four patients completed the study, 189 in the placebo group and 185 in the treatment group.

Plasma volume, umbilical artery Doppler flow, and antepartum fetal heart testing in high-risk pregnancies.

The purpose of this clinical study is to investigate the diagnostic value of plasma volume (PV), nonstress test (NST), contraction stress test (CST), and umbilical artery Doppler (UAD) in detecting fetal compromise in 81 patients (83 fetuses) at risk for fetal growth retardation. Neither PV nor UAD studies were used in the clinical management. There were two stillbirths and three neonatal deaths for a perinatal mortality of 6%.

Immunoreactive Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide, Vasoactive Intestinal Polypeptide, and Somatostatin in Developing Chicken Spinal Cord Motoneurons.

The distribution of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-, and somatostatin (SOM)-like immunoreactivities (-LI) in neurons of the spinal cord of developing chickens was characterized by use of the indirect immunofluorescence technique, and the findings related to a possible role for these peptides in the development of muscles and motor endplates. CGRP-LI in presumptive motoneurons of the ventral horn was first observed at embryonic day 6. During the following days the number of CGRP-immunoreactive (IR) cells increased reaching high numbers between days 12 and 18 of incubation, and thereafter decreasing in numbers until hatching.

Clinical significance of elevated mean arterial blood pressure in second trimester and threshold increase in systolic or diastolic blood pressure during third trimester.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the diagnostic value of an average mean arterial blood pressure in the second trimester of greater than or equal to 90 mm Hg and a threshold increase in diastolic blood pressure of greater than or equal to 15 mm Hg or in systolic blood pressure of greater than or equal to 30 mm Hg, on two occasions, 6 hours apart, in predicting preeclampsia. The study population consisted of 700 young normotensive primigravid women who were evaluated prospectively during pregnancy. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were carefully measured at each prenatal visit, and the mean arterial blood pressure in the second trimester was calculated for each measurement.
