Magnetotactic bacteria have been proposed as ideal biological nanorobots due to the presence of an intracellular chain of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which allows them to be guided and controlled by external magnetic fields and provides them with theragnostic capabilities intrinsic to magnetic nanoparticles, such as magnetic hyperthermia for cancer treatment. Here, we study three different bacterial species, (MSR-1), (AMB-1), and (MV-1), which synthesize magnetite nanoparticles with different morphologies and chain arrangements. We analyzed the impact of these parameters on the effective magnetic anisotropy, , and the heating capacity or Specific Absorption Rate, SAR, under alternating magnetic fields.

Collapsing Glomerulopathy Leading To Rapidly Progressive Allograft Failure From Cytomegalovirus and SARS-CoV-2 Infection With Concomitant BK Virus Nephropathy.

We present a challenging clinical case of a 68-year-old female kidney transplant recipient who had a complicated posttransplant course marked by borderline T-cell-mediated rejection and BK virus nephropathy. The treatment for borderline rejection with steroids resulted in overimmunosuppression, and the patient acquired cytomegalovirus infection manifesting as colitis and SARS-CoV-2 infection. This progressed rapidly to collapsing glomerulopathy and allograft failure.

Outcomes of Kidneys Transplanted From Hepatitis C Viremic Donors to Naive Recipients From an Appalachian Rural Kidney Transplant Program.

Objectives: Before the advent of direct-acting antiviral therapy for hepatitis C virus, a large proportion of kidneys from donors with hepatitis C viremia were discarded. Hepatitis C virus is now amenable to effective treatment with excellent seronegativity rates. Magnetotactic bacteria AMB-1 have been cultured using three different media: magnetic spirillum growth medium with Wolfe's mineral solution (MSGM + W), magnetic spirillum growth medium without Wolfe's mineral solution (MSGM - W), and flask standard medium (FSM). The influence of the culture medium on the structural, morphological, and magnetic characteristics of the magnetosome chains biosynthesized by these bacteria has been investigated by using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. All bacteria exhibit similar average size for magnetosomes, 40-45 nm, but FSM bacteria present slightly longer subchains.

Review of respiratory syncytial virus infection among older adults and transplant recipients.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cause of pulmonary infection among children and has been increasingly recognized as an important respiratory pathogen in older adults and immunocompromised hosts. Among older adults, RSV can lead to exacerbations of underlying lung and cardiac disease. It is also associated with significant morbidity and mortality in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) and solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients and may be associated with acute rejection and chronic lung allograft dysfunction among lung transplant recipients (LTRs).

SLET relies on the use of tissue banks for the AM that reduces the availability of the technique.

Digital conversations about depression among Hispanics and non-Hispanics in the US: a big-data, machine learning analysis identifies specific characteristics of depression narratives in Hispanics.

Background: Digital conversations can offer unique information into the attitudes of Hispanics with depression outside of formal clinical settings and help generate useful information for medical treatment planning. Our study aimed to explore the big data from open-source digital conversations among Hispanics with regard to depression, specifically attitudes toward depression comparing Hispanics and non-Hispanics using machine learning technology.

Methods: Advanced machine-learning empowered methodology was used to mine and structure open-source digital conversations of self-identifying Hispanics and non-Hispanics who endorsed suffering from depression and engaged in conversation about their tone, topics, and attitude towards depression.

Idiopathic Bilateral Ovarian Vein Thrombosis in a Non-Pregnant Healthy Patient: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) is a potentially life-threatening condition, and it is typically related to the peripartum period; however, it is also associated with pelvic inflammatory disease, recent pelvic or abdominal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, thrombophilia, malignancy, and sepsis. Idiopathic isolated OVT is rare and is usually presented as case reports in the medical literature. In this report, we present a case of bilateral OVT in a postmenopausal female with no identifiable risk factors and normal coagulation profile workup to highlight the importance of considering it as a differential diagnosis in female patients presenting with abdominal pain.

Effects of metronidazole on the fecal microbiome and metabolome in healthy dogs.

Background: Metronidazole has a substantial impact on the gut microbiome. However, the recovery of the microbiome after discontinuation of administration, and the metabolic consequences of such alterations have not been investigated to date.

Objectives: To describe the impact of 14-day metronidazole administration, alone or in combination with a hydrolyzed protein diet, on fecal microbiome, metabolome, bile acids (BAs), and lactate production, and on serum metabolome in healthy dogs.

Initial Experience Using Disposable Negative Pressure Wound Therapy for Closed Incisions Following Outpatient Wound Reconstruction.

Here we describe the case of a patient who was initially admitted for decompensated heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Only later in his course did he develop fever that led to testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-COV-2).

Background: Monocyte to High Density Lipoprotein Ratio (MHR) is a new marker that has been associated with major adverse cardiovascular outcomes among STEMI patients. We sought to strengthen the association between MHR and mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) among STEMI patients who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention.

Methods: Studies were included if they satisfied the following criteria:1) Observational Studies; 2) Adult patients with ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) who underwent primary percutaneous intervention (PCI); and 3) Reported data on mortality and major adverse cardiovascular events.

Background: Pulmonary hypertension is a usual complication of long-standing mitral valve disease. Perioperative pulmonary hypertension is a risk factor for right ventricular failure and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with pulmonary hypertension undergoing mitral valve surgery. Legionnaires' disease (LD) is a severe lung infection caused by the bacteria Legionella pneumophila which is usually associated with water managing installations like cooling towers. Several outbreaks of LD have been linked to individual sources of bioaerosol in the past. However, the transmission pathways as well as the influence of meteorological factors in the spreading of such bioaerosols remain unclear.

Rice is the staple food and provides livelihood for smallholder farmers in the coastal delta regions of South and Southeast Asia. However, its productivity is often low because of several abiotic stresses including high soil salinity and waterlogging during the wet (monsoon) season and high soil and water salinity during the dry season. Development and dissemination of suitable rice varieties tolerant of these multiple stresses encountered in coastal zones are of prime importance for increasing and stabilizing rice productivity, however adoption of new varieties has been slow in this region.

Waterborne polyurethanes (WBPUs) have attracted increasing attention in a wide range of industrial applications because of their versatile properties as well as ecofriendly nature. Although extensive research has been carried out on WBPU synthesis, the roles of some of the key synthesis components remain unclear. In this study, through systematically controlling and fine tuning the precursor compositions and reaction conditions, over 300 WBPUs are synthesized.
