Evaluation of Integrative Medicine in Residency-Psychiatry Curriculum.

Objective: This study describes knowledge change, self-assessed confidence in providing integrative medicine approach, and respondents' perspective on value and feasibility for the Integrative Medicine in Residency-Psychiatry (IMR-Psychiatry) curriculum, a 100-h elective offered during psychiatry training.

Methods: Residents/fellows completed pre-post Medical Knowledge tests and self-assessment instruments tracking self-rated confidence. Participants were also interviewed for feedback about their experience using a semi-structured design after completion of the program.

COVID-19 elucidated the urgency for health justice advocacy for Latinx farmworkers in Florida. While deemed essential, farmworkers' value was not reflected in policy responses to ensure their protection. The deficiency of culturally and linguistically relevant guidance from government agencies and state restrictions requiring identification for COVID-19 services were impediments to farmworkers accessing care.

Broad spectrum micronutrients: a potential key player to address emotional dysregulation.

Psychiatric conditions are inherently multifactorial and must be understood and addressed within a multidimensional framework. Adequate nutritional intake is necessary for optimal mental health and is thus an essential component of any psychiatric treatment plan; this is especially true as many patients have a diet high in ultra-processed foods. However, due to a variety of factors such as individual biological and behavioral contributors, modern farming practices, and climate change, implementing a healthy diet alone may not be sufficient to satisfy nutritional requirements.

Background: breeding programs are essential to establish genetic resource banks and produce offspring to strengthen the conservation of endangered species. However, many programs fail to maintain viable populations due to reproductive problems, including dystocia in pregnant females. Dystocia encompasses different emergency obstetric situations for the lives of dams and fetuses that require urgent intervention.

Implementing a Mind-Body Skills Group in Psychiatric Residency Training.

Objective: The burnout crisis in healthcare has led to interventions promoting resiliency and wellness among residents. One such intervention is a 10-week Mind-Body Skills Group including didactics and experiential exercises, self-expression, and small-group support. A Mind-Body Skills Group for residents and fellows in the University of Arizona-Tucson Department of Psychiatry aimed to teach skills for self-care and patient care.

Incisional wound closure is a key surgical step to facilitate tissue healing, reduce the risk of infection and obtain esthetic and functional recovery. Cyanoacrylates such as Histoacryl® have become a popular choice in surgical veterinary practice. However, how Histoacryl® is affecting tissue regeneration and bacterial load in the wound in comparison to poliglecaprone (Monocryl®) traditional suture methods remains to be determined.

Comprehensively addressing postpartum maternal health: a content and image review of commercially available mobile health apps.

Background: The United States is currently facing a maternal morbidity and mortality crisis, with the highest rates of any resource-rich nation. In efforts to address this, new guidelines for postpartum care suggest that mobile health (mHealth) apps can help provide complementary clinical support for new mothers during the postpartum period. However, to date no study has evaluated the quality of existing mHealth tools targeted to this time period in terms of sufficiency of maternal health information, inclusivity of people of color, and app usability.

Adaptive Skills in FXS: A Review of the Literature and Evaluation of the PEDI-Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT) to Measure Adaptive Skills.

As adaptive skills (AS) are dynamic and may indicate the success of an intervention, they are a common domain measured in clinical trials. Typical interview tools for measuring AS are time-consuming, and questionnaire measures often lead to inconsistent information. The present study was designed to evaluate the feasibility, validity and test-retest performance of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory Computer Adaptive Test (PEDI-CAT) in Fragile X syndrome (FXS).

Have there been changes in the application of mechanical ventilation in relation to scientific evidence? A multicenter observational study in Mexico.

Objective: The main study objectives were to describe the practice of mechanical ventilation over an 18-year period in Mexico, and estimate changes in mortality among critical patients subjected to invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV).

Design: A retrospective subanalysis of a prospective observational study conducted in 1998, 2004, 2010 and 2016 was carried out.

Setting: Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in Mexico.

The Integrative Psychiatry Curriculum: Development of an Innovative Model.

The Integrative Psychiatry Curriculum (IPC) was developed to train psychiatry residents and fellows to apply an Integrative Medicine (IM) approach for patients presenting with psychiatric disorders. Launched in 2015, IPC includes interactive online courses, in-person experiential sessions, and a clinical component with supervision. Twenty-one residents and fellows have completed the curriculum.

Decisional Capacity for Informed Consent in Males and Females with Fragile X Syndrome.

Although informed consent is critical for all research, there is increased ethical responsibility as individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) become the focus of more clinical trials. This study examined decisional capacity for informed consent to clinical trials in individuals with fragile X syndrome (FXS). Participants were 152 adolescents and adults (80 males, 72 females) with FXS who completed a measure of decisional capacity and a comprehensive battery of neurocognitive and psychiatric measures.

Assessing Integrative Psychiatry Curriculum Needs.

Background: Research on incorporating integrative medicine (IM) into medical training is increasing. Programs and organizations around IM have been established, but there has not previously been a needs assessment focused on integrating IM into psychiatry training.

Objectives: The results of a needs assessment of training directors and faculty, focused on interest and priorities for developing an IM curriculum for psychiatry training programs, are described.

Health care for individuals with fragile X Syndrome: Understanding access and quality.

Background: Previous research suggests that individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) may experience challenges accessing quality health care.

Objective/hypothesis: This study explored parent perceptions of access and quality of health care services for children with fragile X syndrome (FXS), the leading hereditary cause of intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Methods: Nearly 600 primary caregivers of at least one child with FXS completed an online survey on access, barriers, and quality of health care for their family member with FXS (N = 731).

Severe hypercapnia and outcome of mechanically ventilated patients with moderate or severe acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Purpose: To analyze the relationship between hypercapnia developing within the first 48 h after the start of mechanical ventilation and outcome in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).

Patients And Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of three prospective non-interventional cohort studies focusing on ARDS patients from 927 intensive care units (ICUs) in 40 countries. These patients received mechanical ventilation for more than 12 h during 1-month periods in 1998, 2004, and 2010.

Association between ventilatory settings and development of acute respiratory distress syndrome in mechanically ventilated patients due to brain injury.

Purpose: In neurologically critically ill patients with mechanical ventilation (MV), the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality, but the role of ventilatory management has been scarcely evaluated. We evaluate the association of tidal volume, level of PEEP and driving pressure with the development of ARDS in a population of patients with brain injury.

Impact of sedation and analgesia during noninvasive positive pressure ventilation on outcome: a marginal structural model causal analysis.

Purpose: There are limited data available about the role of sedation and analgesia during noninvasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV). The objective of study was to estimate the effect of analgesic or sedative drugs on the failure of NPPV.

Methods: We studied patients who received at least 2 h of NPPV as first-line therapy in a prospective observational study carried out in 322 intensive care units from 30 countries.

DSM-5 changes and the prevalence of parent-reported autism spectrum symptoms in Fragile X syndrome.

We used survey methodology to assess parent-reported autism symptomology in 758 individuals (639 males; 119 females) with fragile X syndrome (FXS). Caregivers reported whether their child with FXS had been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and endorsed symptoms based on a list of observable behaviors related to ASD diagnoses. Symptom counts were categorized based on DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 criteria.

Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Zinc Deficiencies in Children Presenting with Symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder increasing in prevalence. Although there is limited evidence to support treating ADHD with mineral/vitamin supplements, research does exist showing that patients with ADHD may have reduced levels of vitamin D, zinc, ferritin, and magnesium. These nutrients have important roles in neurologic function, including involvement in neurotransmitter synthesis.
