Intracranial compliance in patients with COVID-19: a multicenter observational study.

Background:  Patients with severe coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) may require the use of invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) for prolonged periods. Aggressive MV parameters have been associated with changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with acute intracranial disorders. Significant ICP elevation could compromise intracranial compliance (ICC) and cerebrovascular hemodynamics (CVH).

The Togaviridae family comprises several New- and Old-World Alphaviruses that have been responsible for thousands of human illnesses, including the RNA arbovirus Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). Since then, CHIKV has been circulating in diverse countries around the world, leading to increased morbidity rates.

Comparison of Noninvasive Measurements of Intracranial with Tap Test Results in Patients with Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Background: Normal pressure hydrocephalus is a disease directly related to the change in intracranial compliance and consequent repercussions in the brain parenchyma. Invasive monitoring of such parameters proves to be reliable especially for prognosis in neurocritical patients; however, it is not applicable in an outpatient service setting. The present study describes the comparison between the tap test results and the parameters obtained with a non-invasive sensor for monitoring intracranial compliance in patients with suspected NPH.

Socioeconomic impact and burden of hypertension in the Philippines projected in 2050.

Hypertension has remained the number one cause of cardiovascular death in the Philippines for over three (3) decades. Despite this finding, the burden accounted for by hypertension is investigated to a lesser extent. We performed this study to determine the socioeconomic impact of hypertension in the Philippines, and it was projected in the next 30 years.

Pythium insidiosum complex hides a cryptic novel species: Pythium periculosum.

Early phylogenetic analysis of Pythium insidiosum, the etiologic agent of pythiosis in mammals, showed the presence of a complex comprising three monophyletic clusters. Two included isolates recovered from cases of pythiosis in the Americas (Cluster I) and Asia (Cluster II), whereas the third cluster included four diverged isolates three from humans in Thailand and the USA, and one isolate from a USA spectacled bear (Cluster III). Thereafter, several phylogenetic analyses confirmed the presence of at least three monophyletic clusters, with most isolates placed in clusters I and II.

Geographic distribution of Pythium insidiosum infections in the United States.

Objective: To describe the geographic distribution of infections caused by Pythium insidiosum in dogs, horses, and other animal species in the US.

Animals: For the last 20 years, we have collected data from cases of pythiosis in 1,150 horses, 467 dogs, and other species (59) from various geographic locations in the US.

Procedures: Due to lost data (from 2006 to 2016), the selected cases include years 2000 to 2005 and 2016 to 2020.

Noninvasive intracranial pressure real-time waveform analysis monitor during prostatectomy robotic surgery and Trendelenburg position: case report.

Both robotic surgery and head-down tilt increase intracranial pressure by impairing venous blood outflow. Prostatectomy is commonly performed in elderly patients, who are more likely to develop postoperative cognitive disorders. Therefore, increased intracranial pressure could play an essential role in cognitive decline after surgery.

Bedside nurses' care model: challenges and perspectives for an innovative practice.

Objective: To understand the practice of nurses in the context of the care model at the bedside of the patient in an Intensive Care Unit, in the light of the ethics of virtue.

Method: Qualitative research, carried out in an Intensive Care Unit of a University Hospital MG/Brazil. Data were collected in February 2016 through a semi-structured interview applied to the 12 nurses who worked at the unit.

Building on the gains of May Measurement Month 2017 (MMM17), the Philippine Society of Hypertension once again took part in MMM18 to raise awareness of high blood pressure (BP) in the country and to harness opportunistic BP screening in detecting unaware hypertensive individuals and referring them for treatment. We followed the standard MMM18 protocol designed by the International Society of Hypertension, utilizing convenience sampling with volunteer investigators, taking three sitting BP measurements of volunteer adults (≥18 years). Basic data on demographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors were also taken.

Serum Myeloperoxidase, C-reactive Protein and α1-acid Glycoprotein: Insights about Cardiovascular Risk in End-stage Renal Disease.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Elevated serum concentrations of myeloperoxidase (MPO) are associated with an increased risk of developing CVD. The objective of this study was to evaluate serum MPO levels, as well as other laboratory parameters, in individuals with ESRD, with and without CVD, undergoing hemodialysis.

The absolute configuration, (3a,3'a,7a,7'a), of the title compound, CHO, synthesized a palladium-catalyzed homocoupling reaction, was determined on the basis of the synthetic pathway and was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The homocoupled mol-ecule is formed by two chemically identical moieties built up from two five- and six-membered fused rings. The supra-molecular assembly is controlled mainly by C-H⋯O inter-actions that lead to the formation of hydrogen-bonded chains of mol-ecules along the [001] direction, while weak dipolar inter-actions and van der Waals forces hold the chains together in the crystal structure.

Scleredema of Buschke associated with difficult-to-control type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Scleredema of Buschke (SB) is a rare disorder of connective tissue characterized by diffuse non-pitting induration of the skin, mainly on the cervical, deltoid and dorsal regions. It is a cutaneous mucinosis of unknown etiology and is associated with bacterial or viral infections, hematological disorders and diabetes mellitus. Histopathological examination shows thickened dermis with wide collagen bundles separated by gaps that correspond to mucopolysaccharide deposits, visualized using special staining.

Adaptability and phenotypic stability of soybean cultivars for grain yield and oil content.

The aim of this study was to verify the adaptability and stability of soybean cultivars with regards to yield and oil content. Data of soybean yield and oil content were used from experiments set up in six environments in the 2011/12 and 2012/13 crop seasons in the municipalities of Patos de Minas, Uberaba, Lavras, and São Gotardo, Minas Gerais, Brazil, testing 36 commercial soybean cultivars of both conventional and transgenic varieties. The Wricke method and GGE biplot analysis were used to evaluate adaptability and stability of these cultivars.

Validation of a New Minimally Invasive Intracranial Pressure Monitoring Method by Direct Comparison with an Invasive Technique.

In this chapter we present in vivo experiments with a new minimally invasive method of monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP). Strain gauge deformation sensors are externally glued onto the exposed skull. The signal from these sensors is amplified, filtered, and sent to a computer with appropriate software for analysis and data storage.

Validation of a New Noninvasive Intracranial Pressure Monitoring Method by Direct Comparison with an Invasive Technique.

The search for a completely noninvasive intracranial pressure (ICPni) monitoring technique capable of real-time digitalized monitoring is the Holy Grail of brain research. If available, it may facilitate many fundamental questions within the range of ample applications in neurosurgery, neurosciences and translational medicine, from pharmaceutical clinical trials, exercise physiology, and space applications. In this work we compare invasive measurements with noninvasive measurements obtained using the proposed new noninvasive method.

Upper limb static-stretching protocol decreases maximal concentric jump performance.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the acute effects of an upper limb static-stretching (SS) protocol on the maximal concentric jump performance. We recruited 25 young healthy, male, resistance trained individuals (stretched group, n = 15 and control group, n = 10) in this study. The randomized between group experimental protocol consisted of a three trials of maximal concentric jump task, before and after a SS of the upper limb.
