Spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause significant motor, sensory, and autonomic dysfunction by disrupting neural connections. As a result, it is a global health challenge that requires innovative interventions to improve outcomes. This review assesses the wide-ranging impacts of SCI and focuses on the laparoscopic implantation of neuroprosthesis (LION) as an emerging and promising rehabilitation technique.

Article Synopsis
  • Two previously unidentified female species of the genus Epipleoneura, E. capilliformis and E. albuquerquei, are described and diagnosed.
  • E. capilliformis features a unique trilobed hind lobe with an elevated middle section, distinguishing it from other females in the genus.
  • In contrast, E. albuquerquei possesses a smooth, posteriorly oriented hind lobe that is concave, resembling E. haroldoi but differing in its structure.

Article Synopsis
  • A novel sandwich-type electrochemical aptasensor was developed using a DNA aptamer and a special cyclodextrin to create a sensitive detection method for prostate-specific antigen (PSA).
  • The sensor works by capturing PSA molecules on an electrode surface modified with graphene and gold, leading to a signaling response through a horseradish peroxidase complex.
  • The aptasensor achieved effective detection of PSA in a range from 0.5 ng/mL to 50 ng/mL, demonstrating high selectivity and a low detection limit of 0.11 ng/mL.

Obesity is a multifactorial disease that is difficult to control worldwide. Although nuts are recognized health foods, the application of food in obesity management is unclear. We systematically reviewed the literature and performed a meta-analysis to evaluate if nut consumption favors people on energy restriction (ER) dietary interventions.

The Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) has been applied to determine salivary biomarkers with high sensitivity and cost-effectiveness. Our study aimed to test the hypothesis that the spectral profile of saliva demonstrates distinct vibrational modes corresponding to different exercise protocols, thereby facilitating exercise monitoring. Saliva samples were collected from trained male subjects at three intervals: pre-exercise, post-exercise, and 3 h post-exercise.

Here, we report the preparation of a novel Janus nanoparticle with opposite Ir and mesoporous silica nanoparticles through a partial surface masking with toposelective modification method. This nanomaterial was employed to construct an enzyme-powered nanomachine with self-propulsion properties for on-command delivery. The cargo-loaded nanoparticle was provided with a pH-sensitive gate and unit control at the mesoporous face by first attaching boronic acid residues and further immobilization of glucose oxidase through reversible boronic acid esters with the carbohydrate residues of the glycoenzyme.

Background:  Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) are a group of autosomal recessive, inherited, lysosomal, and neurodegenerative diseases that causes progressive dementia, seizures, movement disorders, language delay/regression, progressive visual failure, and early death. Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2), caused by biallelic pathogenic variants of the gene, is the only NCL with an approved targeted therapy. The laboratory diagnosis of CLN2 is established through highly specific tests, leading to diagnostic delays and eventually hampering the provision of specific treatment for patients with CLN2.

In this study, we have comprehensively presented taxonomic information on all 62 known species of Heteragrion Selys, 1862, which includes illustrations, photographs, diagnostic characters, and a key to males. Our analysis is based on the examination of over 900 specimens from 19 different collections worldwide, encompassing the type material for at least 42 species. Furthermore, we have described a new species, Heteragrion corderoi sp.

Among the plant molecular mechanisms capable of effectively mitigating the effects of adverse weather conditions, the heat shock proteins (HSPs), a group of chaperones with multiple functions, stand out. At a time of full progress on the omic sciences, they look very promising in the genetic engineering field, especially in order to conceive superior genotypes, potentially tolerant to abiotic stresses (AbSts). Recently, some works concerning certain families of maize HSPs (ZmHSPs) were published.

Supplements and diets containing L-leucine, a branched-chain amino acid, have been considered beneficial for controlling oxidative stress and maintaining cardiac tissue in toxicity models using doxorubicin, a drug widely used in cancer treatment. However, there is a lack of studies in the literature that assess the effects of this diet on other organs and tissues, such as the liver and kidneys. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of a leucine-rich diet on the liver and kidneys of healthy rats submitted to the doxorubicin toxicity model by analyzing biomarkers of oxidative stress and histological parameters.

The distribution of avian haemosporidians of the genus in the Neotropics remains poorly understood. Recent studies confirmed their presence in the region using molecular techniques alone, but evidence for gametocytes and data on putative competent hosts for are still lacking outside highland areas. We combined morphological and molecular data to characterize a new species infecting a non-migratory red-legged seriema (), the first report of a competent host for in Brazil.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate bread with the use of pulp and flours of pequi, in partial replacement of water and wheat flour, to develop a bakery product with good technological, nutritional and sensorial qualities. The pequi husk and pulp flours were obtained by means of a thermal pre-treatment, oven drying and standardization of the dry material. Whereas, the bread formulation was defined through the baker's formulation.
