is a major causative agent of streptococcosis in Nile tilapia () and understanding its etiology is important to ensure the sustainable development of global tilapia farming. Our research group recently observed contrasting disease patterns in animals infected with two different serotypes (Ib and III). To better understand the basis for these divergent responses, we analyzed the brain transcriptome of Nile tilapia following bacterial exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research utilizing rolling circle amplification (RCA) and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) has advanced our understanding of bovine papillomavirus (BPV) types associated with lesions in bulls.
  • This study successfully sequenced the genomes of BPV types from esophageal lesions in a bull, revealing the presence of both BPV2 and BPV4—indicating a mixed viral infection in the carcinoma in situ.

Human alphaherpesvirus 1 (HSV-1) is a significantly widespread viral pathogen causing recurrent infections that are currently incurable despite available treatment protocols. Studies have highlighted the potential of antimicrobial peptides sourced from venom, particularly those belonging to the mastoparan family, as effective against HSV-1. This study aimed to demonstrate the antiviral properties of mastoparans, including mastoparan-L [I, R], mastoparan-MO, and [I, R] mastoparan, against HSV-1.

The study aimed to obtain environmentally relevant microfibers (MFs) from polyester fabric and assess their impact on the oyster Crassostrea gasar. MFs were obtained by grinding the fabric, and their accumulation in oysters gills and digestive glands was analyzed after exposure to 0.5 mg/L for 2 and 24 h.

Human enteroviruses (EV) are the most common cause of aseptic meningitis worldwide. Data on EV viral load in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and related epidemiological studies are scarce in Brazil. This study investigated the influence of EV viral load on CSF parameters, as well as identifying the involved species.

Mucosal vaccination appears to be suitable to protect against SARS-CoV-2 infection. In this study, we tested an intranasal mucosal vaccine candidate for COVID-19 that consisted of a cationic liposome containing a trimeric SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and CpG-ODNs, a Toll-like receptor 9 agonist, as an adjuvant. In vitro and in vivo experiments indicated the absence of toxicity following the intranasal administration of this vaccine formulation.

Endometriosis (EM) is a gynecological disorder that presents significant immune dysregulation in its pathophysiology. Recent studies indicate that the Complement System may play a significant role in the immune processes involved in peritoneal clearance and inflammation in EM patients. C5a is a potent anaphylatoxin molecule of complement associated with the development of inflammatory disorders, however its possible impact on EM development requires further investigation.

Background: Pulmonary vascular abnormalities pose a risk for severe life-threatening hemodynamic disturbances following surgical repair of congenital cardiac communications (CCC). In the distal lung, small airways and vessels share a common microenvironment, where biological crosstalks take place. Because respiratory cells infected by viruses express a number of molecules with potential impact on airway and vascular remodeling, we decided to test the hypothesis that CCC patients carrying viral genomes in the airways might be at a higher risk for pulmonary (and systemic) hemodynamic disturbances postoperatively.

Green turtles, Chelonia mydas, have been included in biomonitoring efforts given its status as an endangered species. Many studies, however, rely on samples from stranded animals, raising the question of how death affects important biochemical and molecular biomarkers. The goal of this study was to investigate post mortem fluctuations in the antioxidant response and metabolism of carbohydrates in the liver of C.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) are present in all organisms and can present several activities and potential applications in human and animal health. Screening these molecules scaffolds represents a key point for discovering and developing novel biotechnological products, including antimicrobial, antiviral and anticancer drugs candidates and insecticidal molecules with potential applications in agriculture. Therefore, considering the amount of biological data currently deposited on public databases, computational approaches have been commonly used to predicted and identify novel cysteine-rich peptides scaffolds with known or unknown biological properties.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of photodynamic therapy (PDT) after root canal preparation on pain relief in posterior teeth presenting with symptomatic apical periodontitis (SAP). A visual analog scale (VAS) was completed by the patients which registered their pain perception as none (0), mild (1-3), moderate (4-7), or severe (8-10). Only patients who registered moderate or severe pain were included.

Objectives: We evaluated the performance of a nucleoprotein-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of IgG antibodies to SARS-CoV-2.

Methods: The ELISA was based on serum IgG reactivity to a 46-kDa protein derived from the recombinant SARS-CoV2 nucleoprotein. Assay sensitivity was assessed using serum samples from 134 COVID-19 confirmed cases obtained > 15 days after symptom onset.

The thermodimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is the etiological agent of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a deep mycosis endemic in Latin American countries that affects mainly male rural workers. Infection by P. brasiliensis has also been reported in several species of terrestrial animals; however, the capacity of the fungus to infect aquatic organisms is poorly known.

This study aimed to determine the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on postoperative pain after treatments of teeth with necrotic pulps. This randomized clinical trial consisted of 60 patients who presented for treatment of asymptomatic teeth. The patients were randomly assigned into the Control Group (CG) or the PDT Group (PG).

Bacteria of the Bacillus cereus group colonize several ecological niches and infect different hosts. Bacillus cereus, a ubiquitous species causing food poisoning, Bacillus thuringiensis, an entomopathogen, and Bacillus anthracis, which is highly pathogenic to mammals, are the most important species of this group. These species are closely related genetically, and their specific toxins are encoded by plasmids.

While scientific advances have led to large-scale production and widespread distribution of vaccines and antiviral drugs, viruses still remain a major cause of human diseases today. The ever-increasing reports of viral resistance and the emergence and re-emergence of viral epidemics pressure the health and scientific community to constantly find novel molecules with antiviral potential. This search involves numerous different approaches, and the use of antimicrobial peptides has presented itself as an interesting alternative.

This report presents the pathologic findings associated with disseminated infection due to Cladosporium halotolerans in a dog that was simultaneously infected with canine adenovirus-1 (CAdV-1) and canine parvovirus-2 (CPV-2). A 12-year-old, mixed breed dog, with a clinical history of neurological manifestations was submitted for routine autopsy due to poor prognosis. The principal pathologic findings were mycotic necrotizing nephritis, hepatitis, and splenitis with embolic dissemination to the brain resulting in mycotic necrotizing meningoencephalitis, ventriculitis, choroid plexitis, and obstructive hydrocephalus associated with intralesional and intravascular septate pigmented fungi.

Background: Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is a Gram-positive bacterium that colonizes the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract of humans. This bacterium has also been isolated from various animals, such as fish and cattle. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) can act as regulators of gene expression in bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Physical mapping of repetitive DNA families in the karyotypes of fish is important to understand the organization and evolution of different orders, families, genera, or species. Fish in the genus Imparfinis show diverse karyotypes with various diploid numbers and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) locations. Here we isolated and characterized Tc1-mariner nucleotide sequences from Imparfinis schubarti, and mapped their locations together with 18S rDNA, 5S rDNA, and microsatellite probes in Imparfinis borodini and I.
