Tungiasis is an endemic disease in many resource-poor communities some of which are in South America, which are visited frequently by Spanish travelers. Its diagnosis can be improved with the knowledge of the typical presentation and the correct management of its injuries. We report the first four cases identified of imported tungiasis in Mallorca.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFConformational preferences of methanediol, dimethoxymethane, methanediamine, and fluoromethanol in the presence of solvents of diverse polarity (water, acetone, and chloroform), modeled with the polarizable continuum model, were analyzed within the framework of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules. The results indicate that the hydrogens bonded to the anomeric carbon experience the largest reorganization of electron density upon conformational change, as was obtained from previous calculations in the gas phase. When the water solvation is simulated by explicit inclusion of water molecules, the electron density reorganization involved in the cluster formation is significantly different for each conformer of methanediol.

The electronic structure of the different copper centers in this family of enzymes has been extensively studied and discussed for years with a particular focus on the exchange coupling regime in the trinuclear cluster (TNC). Using NMR spectroscopy we have quantified the exchange coupling constant in the type 3 center in a fully metalated oxidase; this value in Fet3p is significantly higher than that reported for proteins containing isolated type 3 centers as tyrosinase.

We demonstrate, using direct approaches, that loss of the major SV2 isoform in a central nervous system nerve terminal is associated with an elevation in both resting and evoked presynaptic Ca(2+) signals. This increase is essential for the expression of the SV2B(-/-) secretory phenotype, characterized by changes in synaptic vesicle dynamics, synaptic plasticity, and synaptic strength.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of an electron spoiler to modify these beams for treating surface skin diseases and evaluate the feasibility of this method.

Genomic comparisons and sequence analyses conducted with these isolates revealed the presence of bla(VIM-2) in two clonally related isolates, and bla(IMP-15) in a clonally unrelated isolate. Both genes were found to be carried by class 1 integrons, and bla(IMP-15) was additionally present on a broad host-range plasmid.
