Background: Endovascular interventions in infrapopliteal occlusive artery disease are becoming more complex, and this frequently tests the standard method of treatment, plain old balloon angioplasty (POBA). The potential that serration angioplasty could produce a more acceptable tibial artery lumen was assessed in this study.

Aim: The aim of this single-center subgroup analysis was to compare acute angiographic results after endovascular treatment using the Serranator serration balloon catheter in patients participating in the PRELUDE-BTK trial with POBA of the infrapopliteal arteries.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the relationship between the severity of pulmonary embolism (PE) and levels of lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] in patients at the University Hospital Graz, Austria.
  • A retrospective analysis of 811 PE patients was conducted, categorizing them into four risk groups based on the 2019 ESC guidelines: low risk, intermediate low risk, intermediate high risk, and high risk.
  • The research found no significant correlation between PE severity and Lp(a) levels, as similar median Lp(a) concentrations were observed across all risk groups.

Hypothenar hammer syndrome (HHS) is a rare vascular disease caused by blunt trauma of the hypothenar region. The optimal therapeutic strategy remains debatably since no large comparative studies are available yet. We want to evaluate the effectiveness of intra-arterial thrombolysis on angiographic and clinical outcome parameters in patients with HHS by performing a systematic review of the existing literature.

Rising data suggest that COVID-19 affects vascular endothelium while the underlying mechanisms promoting COVID-19-associated endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory vasculopathy are largely unknown. The aim was to evaluate the contribution of COVID-19 to persisting vascular injury and to identify parameters linked to COVID-19-associated endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory vasculopathy. In a cross-sectional design, flow-mediated dilation (FMD), nitroglycerine-related dilation (NMD), pulse-wave velocity (PWV), augmentation index, intima-media thickness (IMT), compounds of the arginine and kynurenine metabolism, homocysteine, von Willebrand factor (vWF), endothelial microparticles (EMP), antiendothelial cell antibodies, inflammatory, and immunological parameters, as well as nailfold capillary morphology were measured in post-COVID-19 patients, patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) and healthy controls without prior or recent SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Background: Arterial stiffness is independently associated with lower extremity artery disease (LEAD). Although obesity is already known as an independent cardiovascular risk factor, it was found that, paradoxically, in patients diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, an increase in body mass index (BMI) was associated with a decrease in mortality. However, the underlying mechanism of this paradoxical association remain uncertain.

Aims: We assessed the outcome of hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with heart failure (HF) compared with patients with other cardiovascular disease and/or risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidaemia). We further wanted to determine the incidence of HF events and its consequences in these patient populations.

Methods And Results: International retrospective Postgraduate Course in Heart Failure registry for patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and CArdioVascular disease and/or risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidaemia) was performed in 28 centres from 15 countries (PCHF-COVICAV).

Article Synopsis
  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a tough autoimmune disease that leads to blood vessel problems and organ scarring, and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT) can help high-risk patients.
  • A 43-year-old man with severe SSc underwent AHSCT but continued to experience heart issues, prompting the use of the drug rituximab (RTX) eight months later.
  • After starting RTX, the patient's symptoms and organ functions significantly improved, showcasing that RTX may be a beneficial treatment for SSc patients who do not respond to AHSCT.

Glioblastoma is among the tumor entities with an extreme thrombogenic potential and patients are at very high risk of developing a venous thromboembolism (VTE) over the course of the disease, with an incidence of up to 30% per year. Major efforts are currently being made to understand and gain novel insights into the underlying pathomechanisms of the development of VTE in patients with glioblastoma and to find appropriate biomarkers. Yet, patients with glioblastoma not only face a high thromboembolic risk but are also at risk of bleeding events.

Background And Aims: Observational studies support an association between periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases. The study objective was to assess vascular inflammation after periodontal treatment in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

Methods: Ninety patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and severe periodontitis were enrolled in a randomized, controlled trial.

Cancer is an independent risk factor for the development of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Glioblastomas are amongst cancer types with the most thrombogenic potential and patients are at a particularly high risk of VTE with an incidence up to 20-30% per year. Currently, major efforts are underway to gain novel insights into risk factors and pathomechanisms to provide a better understanding of development of VTE in patients with primary brain tumors.

Unlabelled: Background: The white blood cell count to mean platelet volume ratio (WMR) is increasingly gaining importance as a promising prognostic marker in atherosclerotic disease, but data on lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) are not yet available. The principle aim of this study was to assess the association of the WMR with the occurrence of CLTI (chronic limb-threatening ischemia) as the most advanced stage of disease.

Methods: This study was performed as a retrospective analysis on 2121 patients with a diagnosis of LEAD.

We report the case of a 36-year old male, under stable rivaroxaban therapy for 18 months, who was admitted to our emergency room with sudden onset of hemoptysis. Anticoagulant therapy was given after recurrent spontaneous deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and a heterozygous Factor-V-Leiden mutation was present. There was no co-medication reported, however, the patient reported a constant intake of three liters of home-brewn ginger tea per day in the last month.

Objective This study was performed to determine whether add-on oral ivabradine in patients treated with beta blockers 1 hour before coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) is effective in lowering the heart rate and thus improving CCTA quality. Methods In this single-center cohort study, the data of 294 patients referred for ambulant CCTA were retrospectively screened. Patients with an initial heart rate of ≥75 bpm (n = 112) were pretreated with either a combination of bisoprolol and ivabradine or with bisoprolol alone.
