The amyloidogenic self-assembly of many peptides and proteins largely depends on external conditions. Among amyloid-prone proteins, insulin attracts attention because of its physiological and therapeutic importance. In the present work, the amyloid aggregation of insulin is studied in the presence of cholesterol-based detergent, Chobimalt.

Aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol are studied by small-angle neutron scattering over a broad range of polymer molecular masses and concentrations. The scattering data were modeled by a Gaussian chain form factor combined with random phase approximation, which provided good fits over the whole studied concentration range. The results showed that polyethylene glycol in the molecular mass range 0.

Ferritin, a spherically shaped protein complex, is responsible for iron storage in bacteria, plants, animals, and humans. Various ferritin iron core compositions in organisms are associated with specific living requirements, health state, and different biochemical roles of ferritin isomers. Magnetoferritin, a synthetic ferritin derivative, serves as an artificial model system of unusual iron phase structures found in humans.

At present, both native and immobilized nanoparticles are of great importance in many areas of science and technology. In this paper, we have studied magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and their aggregates bound on woven cotton textiles employing two simple modification procedures. One modification was based on the treatment of textiles with perchloric-acid-stabilized magnetic fluid diluted with methanol followed by drying.

Nowadays, determining the disassembly mechanism of amyloids under nanomaterials action is a crucial issue for their successful future use in therapy of neurodegenerative and overall amyloid-related diseases. In this study, the antiamyloid disassembly activity of fullerenes C and C dispersed in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) toward amyloid fibrils preformed from lysozyme and insulin was investigated using a combination of different experimental techniques. Thioflavin T fluorescence assay and atomic force microscopy were applied for monitoring of disaggregation activity of fullerenes.

Many obstacles impede the development of Li-air batteries for practical applications. In particular, there is lack of understanding of the dynamics of processes occurring in porous air electrodes during discharge, including oxygen transport limitations, pore clogging and electrode passivation by both insulating discharge and parasitic reaction products. Here, using small-angle neutron scattering, which provides information on the whole electrode adequate to electrochemical data, we uncover the mechanisms limiting the Li-O2 porous carbon electrode capacity by analysis of the cathode pore filling in highly and poorly solvating media - dimethyl sulfoxide and acetonitrile.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates lamellar phases made of DOPC bilayers mixed with varying chain-length alkan-1-ols (CnOH) at a specific molar ratio, using neutron diffraction to analyze their properties.
  • The bilayer thickness and surface area per DOPC molecule were calculated from the lamellar repeat period and molecular volumes, revealing changes based on the alkan-1-ol chain length.
  • Results show that both bilayer thickness and surface area increase linearly with the length of the alkan-1-ol chains, indicating structural changes in the bilayers with the addition of longer alkan-1-ols.
