The Utility of In-Hospital Postoperative Radiographs Following Surgical Treatment of Traumatic Thoracolumbar Injuries.

Study Design: A retrospective cohort study.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the utility of routine in-hospital postoperative radiographs for identifying hardware failure following surgical treatment of traumatic thoracolumbar (TL) injuries.

Background: Postoperative radiographs following spine surgery are considered standard of care despite a lack of evidence supporting their utility.

Hyperpolarized C magnetic resonance imaging, using metabolic imaging to improve the detection and management of prostate, bladder, and kidney urologic malignancies.

Approximately 25% of the 2 million new cancer diagnoses in the United States in 2018 were comprised of malignancies of the urogenital system. Of these cancers, 75% occurred in the kidney/renal pelvis, prostate, and urinary bladder. Early diagnosis is beneficial to long-term survival.

Outcomes of multilevel vertebrectomy for spondylodiscitis.

Background Context: The incidence of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO) continues to increase in the United States, highlighting the need to recognize unique challenges presented by these cases and develop effective methods of surgical management. To date, no prior research has focused on the outcomes of PVO requiring two or more contiguous corpectomies.

Purpose: To describe our experience in the operative management of PVO in 56 consecutive patients who underwent multilevel corpectomies (≥2 vertebral bodies) via a combined approach.

"Chorea": A Unique Presentation of Left Atrial Myxoma in a Pediatric Patient.

We report an unusual presentation of a large left atrial myxoma in an eight-year-old girl who presented with the sudden onset of chorea. This case illustrates the fact that the presentation of chorea in nonendemic areas for rheumatic fever should raise suspicion for a myxoma. The chorea resolved soon after removal of the myxoma, supporting the hypothesis of an immune-mediated mechanism, or manifestation of paraneoplastic syndrome secondary to the myxoma.

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis: A Diagnostic Conundrum.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a syndrome of excessive immune activation causing widespread inflammation and tissue destruction leading to multi-organ dysfunction and failure. Making the diagnosis of HLH could be quite challenging due to the broad range of presenting symptoms and their lack of specificity. After ruling out considerations for differential diagnoses, recognizing the most common presenting signs and symptoms of HLH, including neurologic dysfunction, and having a high clinical suspicion for HLH in the setting of inflammatory/demyelinating diseases are important for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Fatty Acid Beta-Oxidation Disorders: A Brief Review.

Background: Mitochondrial fatty acid β-oxidation disorders (FAODs) are a heterogeneous group of defects in fatty acid transport and mitochondrial β-oxidation. They are inherited as autosomal recessive disorders and have a wide range of clinical presentations.

Summary: The background information and case report provide important insight into mitochondrial FAODs.

Headache in Behçet's syndrome: review of literature and NYU Behçet's syndrome center experience.

Headache, a common and disabling symptom in Behçet's syndrome, may be associated with a variety of neurologic syndromes and ocular inflammation, or may present as an isolated feature. Our objective is to describe the various neurologic and ocular syndromes of Behçet's syndrome of which headache is a symptom, and to review the features of isolated headaches in Behçet's. We also report results of a study of headache in Behçet's syndrome patients who are followed at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, the first study of its kind in North American patients, and the first to document prevalence of both episodic and chronic daily headache in Behçet's.

Synthesis of fluorescent analogs of alpha-conotoxin MII.

Alpha-conotoxins (alpha-CTxs) are small peptides that are competitive inhibitors of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) and have been used to study the kinetics of nAChRs. Alpha-CTx MII, from the venom of Conus magus, has been shown to potently block both rat alpha3beta2 and rat chimeric alpha6/alpha3beta2beta3 cloned nAChRs expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Tetramethylrhodamine (TMR), Bodipy FL, Alexa Fluor 488, and terbium chelates (TbCh) are fluorescent molecules that can be reacted with the N-terminus of the conopeptide to produce fluorescent conjugates.

Localization--the revolution in consumer markets.

Standardization has been a powerful strategy in consumer markets, but it's reached the point of diminishing returns. And diversity is not the only chink in standardization's armor: Attempts to build stores in the remaining attractive locations often meet fierce resistance from community activists. From California to Florida to New Jersey, neighborhoods are passing ordinances that dictate the sizes and even architectural styles of new shops.
