The tropism of adenoviruses (Ads) is significantly influenced by the binding of various blood factors. To investigate differences in their binding, we conducted cryo-EM analysis on complexes of several human adenoviruses with human platelet factor-4 (PF4), coagulation factors FII (Prothrombin), and FX. While we observed EM densities for FII and FX bound to all the species-C adenoviruses examined, no densities were seen for PF4, even though PF4 can co-pellet with various Ads.

Article Synopsis
  • The SIERRA trial aimed to improve outcomes for older patients with relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (RR AML) by comparing a new treatment, I-apamistamab, against standard care before bone marrow transplant.
  • The study involved 153 patients, with results showing a significantly higher durable complete remission (dCR) rate of 17.1% for the I-apamistamab group compared to 0% for the conventional care group.
  • Although the overall survival rates were similar between the two groups, the I-apamistamab regimen exhibited more promise for achieving long-lasting remission with similar levels of severe side effects.

Multiple myeloma is a rare haematological malignancy characterised by the clonal proliferation of plasma cells within the bone marrow. Typical manifestations include bone pain, fatigue and monoclonal protein elevation in serum and urine. Less than 1% of cases develop myelomatous pleural effusion, a severe complication indicative of advanced disease and a very poor prognosis.

Introduction: Orthopedic surgeons have long acknowledged the difficulty of treating distal tibia and fibula fractures with posterior malleoli fractures in individuals with medical comorbidities due to a lack of inadequate blood supply. Aged Type 2 diabetic individuals, with distal tibia and fibula fracture with posterior malleoli fracture, are more prone to complications such as non-union, wound infection, and delayed bone healing. It is debatable whether surgical or non-invasive treatment is preferable for diabetic complex fractures.

Purpose: Cardiovascular adverse events (CVAEs) are common adverse effects of first-generation Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKis) and limit their use considerably. This led to the development of second-generation BTKis-acalabrutinib and zanubrutinib-which are more selective, potent, and presumed to have better safety profiles than the previous group of medications. However, there have been sporadic reports of CVAEs associated with second-generation BTKis in clinical practice.

The aim of this study was to retrospectively determine clinical features, treatment outcomes, and overall survival in four patients with metastatic retinoblastoma at presentation. The mean age at diagnosis was 63 months (range: 24-108 months). Three patients had overt orbital disease of at least one eye and one patient had microscopic orbital disease with scleral infiltration on histopathology.

  • Protein C (PC) is a crucial vitamin K-dependent protein that helps control blood clotting and maintains blood flow in the body.
  • A mutation in the PROC gene on chromosome 2q14.3 can lead to a deficiency in PC, resulting in various serious health issues like thrombosis or clotting disorders.
  • The case of a 37-year-old woman is discussed, who experienced acute portal vein thrombosis as her first symptom of PC deficiency, presenting with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and blood in her vomit and stool.

Introduction: The burden and mechanisms of endocrine therapy-related bone loss are well known, while there are limited data on chemotherapy-induced bone resorption. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of cytotoxic chemotherapy on bone homeostasis among postmenopausal women with non-metastatic breast cancer.

Materials And Methods: Early and locally advanced postmenopausal non-metastatic breast cancer patients aged 45 to 65 planned for three cycles of anthracycline and four cycles of taxane chemotherapy administered along with dexamethasone (cumulative dose-256 mg) as an antiemetic from June 2018 to December 2021 were included.

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between satisfaction with life and mathematics achievement among a nationally representative sample of Grade 9 learners in South Africa.

Methods: Using the Trends in Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS 2019) based on a sample of 20,829 learners (females = 11,067 and males = 9,719), and employing structural equation modelling (SEM), we examined the nature of the relationship between satisfaction with life and mathematics achievement, considering the role of gender, parental involvement, and instructional clarity.

Results: Our findings showed that satisfaction with life is positively related to mathematics achievement, but is not moderated by gender.
