Objective: To conduct a systematic review of the data in peer-reviewed medical literature and evaluate the effectiveness of lip taping as a pre-surgical naso-alveolar molding (NAM) technique in infants with cleft lip and/or palate.

Design: An electronic search of various databases for relevant studies, regardless of date, from inception to June 2023 was carried out and evaluated. After completing the electronic search and applying our inclusion/exclusion criteria, 6 studies-2 randomized control trials, 2 non-randomized studies, and 2 case series-were included.

The current World Health Organization (WHO) Hepatitis Elimination Strategy suffers from lack of a target for diagnosing or expunging occult HBV infection. A sizable segment of the global population has an undetected HBV infection, particularly the high-risk populations and those residing in countries like India with intermediate endemicity. There is growing proof that people with hidden HBV infection can infect others, and that these infections are linked to serious chronic hepatic complications, especially hepatocellular carcinoma.

Introduction: Clubfoot remains the most common birth defect involving the musculoskeletal system. There are various surgical and non-surgical treatment options available for the management of clubfoot. Using the minimally invasive Ilizarov external fixator method has been reported to have good success rates and fewer complications.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the role and mutations of the XBB omicron variant in COVID-19 cases among hospitalized patients in Tamil Nadu, India, particularly in the context of increased breakthrough infections despite vaccination efforts.
  • - Researchers analyzed nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs from 98 patients using real-time PCR and Next Generation Sequencing, identifying 43 mutations in the S gene, including two new mutations, A27S and T747I, which had not been previously reported.
  • - The findings suggested that factors such as age and underlying health conditions were more critical in susceptibility to infection than vaccination status, with XBB.3 being the main variant identified among vaccinated individuals experiencing breakthrough infections.

Early detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is critical to TB elimination in the current WHO vision of End Tuberculosis Strategy. The study investigates whether detecting plasma cytokines could aid in diagnosing LTBI across household contacts (HHCs) positive for IGRA, HHCs negative for IGRA, and healthy controls. The plasma cytokines were measured using a commercial Bio-Plex Pro Human Cytokine 17-plex assay.

The acetabular liner (AL) is one of the key components that determine the functionality and durability of the total hip joint replacement (THR) device. The performance of Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)-based AL depends critically on the manufacturing route and its properties, which are evaluated pre-clinically using a host of experimental and computational analyses. The conventional manufacturing of an AL involves multiple stages, including extrusion/compression molding followed by machining, which is time/cost intensive and leads to material loss.

Calnuc (nucleobindin-1, nucb1) is a Ca -binding protein involved in the etiology of many human diseases. To understand the functions of calnuc, we have identified a nesfatin-1-like peptide (NLP) in its N terminus that is proteolyzed by a convertase enzyme in the secretory granules of cells. Mutational studies confirm the presence of a proteolytic cleavage site for proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 1 (PCSK1).

In resource-limited settings, there is growing evidence that HIV testing is lacking among high-risk key populations such as men having sex with men, injection drug users, and transgenders largely due to stigma, discrimination, and lack of confidentiality. Findings from recent studies among high-risk key populations and the general population from various regions including resource-limited settings support the need for wider accessibility of HIV self-testing (HIV-ST) to reach those who may not otherwise have access to testing. Therefore, HIV-ST has untapped potential as a strategy to improve access to HIV testing and to increase testing frequency among key high-risk populations and their partners.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers rushed to develop COVID-19 vaccines to boost herd immunity, but initial trials overlooked the safety and efficacy for pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.
  • The study aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccinations on pregnant women and fetal health by analyzing existing literature through systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
  • Findings indicated that COVID-19 vaccinations in pregnancy showed no adverse effects, with strong immune responses and successful antibody transfer to the fetus, highlighting their role in fostering herd immunity among pregnant women.

An increase in the occurrence of viral infectious diseases is a global concern for human health. According to a WHO report, dengue virus (DENV) is one of the most common viral diseases affecting approximately 400 million people annually, with worsening symptoms in nearly 1% of cases. Both academic and industrial researchers have conducted numerous studies on viral epidemiology, virus structure and function, source and route of infection, treatment targets, vaccines, and drugs.

The lethal combination involving TB and HIV, known as "syndemic" diseases, synergistically act upon one another to magnify the disease burden. Individuals on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) are at risk of developing TB-associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS). The underlying inflammatory complication includes the rapid restoration of immune responses following ART, eventually leading to exaggerated inflammatory responses to MTB antigens.

The dynamics of host-virus interactions, and impairment of the host's immune surveillance by dengue virus (DENV) serotypes largely remain ambiguous. Several experimental and preclinical studies have demonstrated how the virus brings about severe disease by activating immune cells and other key elements of the inflammatory cascade. Plasmablasts are activated during primary and secondary infections, and play a determinative role in severe dengue.

In this paper, we develop a healthcare biclustering model in the field of healthcare to reduce the inconveniences linked to the data clustering on gene expression. The present study uses two separate healthcare biclustering approaches to identify specific gene activity in certain environments and remove the duplication of broad gene information components. Moreover, because of its adequacy in the problem where populations of potential solutions allow exploration of a greater portion of the research area, machine learning or heuristic algorithm has become extensively used for healthcare biclustering in the field of healthcare.

Approximately 100-400 million people from more than 100 countries in the tropical and subtropical world are affected by dengue infections. Recent scientific breakthroughs have brought new insights into novel strategies for the production of dengue antivirals and vaccines. The search for specific dengue inhibitors is expanding, and the mechanisms for evaluating the efficacy of novel drugs are currently established, allowing for expedited translation into human trials.

Background: Progressive decline of immune response in HIV patients makes them susceptible to frequent bacterial infections. High usage of antibiotics influences the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria and worsens the clinical outcomes. In this study, the occurrence of drug-resistant genes in Gram-negative bacterial isolates from HIV patients in South India was analyzed.

P21 Activated Kinase 1 (PAK1) is an oncogenic serine/threonine kinase known to play a significant role in the regulation of cytoskeleton and cell morphology. Runt-related transcription factor 3 (RUNX3) was initially known for its tumor suppressor function, but recent studies have reported the oncogenic role of RUNX3 in various cancers. Previous findings from our laboratory provided evidence that Threonine 209 phosphorylation of RUNX3 acts as a molecular switch in dictating the tissue-specific dualistic functions of RUNX3 for the first time.
