Bone substitutes are widely employed for applications in orthopedic surgery for the replacement of injured bone. Among the diverse methods that are used to design 3D bioceramic matrices, Freeze Foaming has gained attention, since it provides the ability to tune the shape of the created structures. One of the major problems related to these constructs is the lack of porosity at the outwards sides (holder) of the scaffold, thus reducing the cellular affinity and creating a rejection of the implant.

DiffErential attainment and Factors AssoCiated with Training applications and Outcomes (DE FACTO) study: Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery in the UK.

Aims: The aims of this study were to describe the demographic, socioeconomic, and educational factors associated with core surgical trainees (CSTs) who apply to and receive offers for higher surgical training (ST3) posts in Trauma & Orthopaedics (T&O).

Methods: Data collected by the UK Medical Education Database (UKMED) between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2019 were used in this retrospective longitudinal cohort study comprising 1,960 CSTs eligible for ST3. The primary outcome measures were whether CSTs applied for a T&O ST3 post and if they were subsequently offered a post.

Feasibility of the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) Protocol in Patients Undergoing Gastrointestinal Cancer Surgeries in a Tertiary Care Hospital-A Prospective Interventional Study.

Unlabelled: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols have emerged as a promising approach to optimize perioperative care and improve outcomes in various surgical specialties. Despite feasibility studies on ERAS in various surgeries, there remains a paucity of research focusing on gastrointestinal cancer surgeries in the Indian context. The primary objective is to evaluate the compliance rate of the ERAS protocol and secondary objectives include the compliance rate of individual components of the protocol, the complications, the length of hospital stay, and the challenges faced during implementation in patients undergoing gastrointestinal cancer surgeries in our tertiary care cancer center.

Premix versus On-Demand Workflow Models in a Veterans Affairs Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy: Impact on Estimated Waste Costs and Patient Wait Time.

The balance between reducing patient wait time and mitigating waste of parenteral products has not been well described in literature. Evaluate the patient wait times and cost-effectiveness of employing a premix versus an on-demand workflow model for compounding parenteral admixtures in a hematology/oncology infusion setting. This single center, retrospective cost analysis compiled manually documented monthly waste reports and estimated drug pricing for the institution to calculate the cost of waste during both premix and on-demand compounding workflows.

A Ventral Hernia Management Pathway; A "Getting It Right First Time" approach to Complex Abdominal Wall Reconstruction.

Introduction: Abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR) is an emerging specialty, involving complex multi-stage operations in patients with high medical and surgical risk. At our hospital, we have developed a growing interest in AWR, with a commitment to improving outcomes through a regular complex hernia MDT. An MDT approach to these patients is increasingly recognized as the path forward in management to optimize patients and improve outcomes.

Sex-Specific Differences in Nutrient Intake in Late Preterm Infants.

Unlabelled: Challenging the assumption of uniform nutritional needs in preterm feeding, this study identifies crucial sex-specific disparities in formula milk intake and growth among late preterm infants. Premature infants have difficulty regulating their oral intake during feeds, which is why clinicians prescribe feeding volume, calories, and protein via the nasogastric route. However, premature male and female infants have different body compositions at birth, and, subsequently, there is no evidence to suggest that male and female preterm infants differ in their nutritional consumption once they begin feeding ad libitum.

The β-cell plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes, in part through the posttranslational modification of self-proteins by biochemical processes such as deamidation. We report the detection by LC-MS/MS of 16 novel Gln and 27 novel Asn deamidations in 14 disease-related proteins within inflammatory cytokine-stressed human islets of Langerhans.

We aimed to describe our center's long-term experience with this unique patient population. Included were adult patients who had undergone Fontan surgery and were followed up at our Adult Congenital Heart Disease clinic between the years 1994 and 2021.

Background & Aims: The reported burden of multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections is highest in patients with cirrhosis from India. We evaluated whether colonisation at multiple barriers predisposes to such infections and poor outcomes in patients with cirrhosis.

Methods: We prospectively performed swab cultures, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), and genotype testing for MDROs from various sites (rectum, nose, composite-skin, and central-line) in patients with cirrhosis (2020-2021) on admission and follow-up at a tertiary institute.

Perceived impact of equality and equity in medical education by junior doctors in the UK.

This exploratory study was undertaken to provide an insight into issues of equality and equity that UK junior doctors perceive in relation to being able to achieve a work-life balance within educational and clinical practice. A survey with 443 junior doctors was conducted between May 2018 and September 2019. Thematic analysis of open question responses alongside correlative analyses were used to highlight issues in equity and equality faced by junior doctors.

Ventilation failure with elective tracheostomy during oral cancer surgery: a case of tracheal diverticulum.

Tracheal diverticulum is usually detected incidentally. Rarely, it may lead to difficulty in securing the airway intraoperatively. Our patient underwent oncological resection under general anaesthesia for advanced oral cancer.

Toward Smart Biomimetic Apatite-Based Bone Scaffolds with Spatially Controlled Ion Substitutions.

Biomimetic apatites exhibit a high reactivity allowing ion substitutions to modulate their in vivo response. We developed a novel approach combining several bioactive ions in a spatially controlled way in view of subsequent releases to address the sequence of events occurring after implantation, including potential microorganisms' colonization. Innovative micron-sized core-shell particles were designed with an external shell enriched with an antibacterial ion and an internal core substituted with a pro-angiogenic or osteogenic ion.
