The study evaluated the larvicidal and reproductive effects of essential oils from Ocimum basilicum, Perilla frutescens, and Mentha spicata on engorged female Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks. Adult immersion and larval packet assays were used to evaluate their larvicidal efficacy and impact on tick reproductive abilities. For tick larvae, Perilla frutescens essential oil had the highest 50% lethal dose of 1.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding how visual systems estimate distance is crucial, as demonstrated in larval zebrafish, which adjust their behavior based on the distance to prey.
  • The researchers developed a special assay to analyze strike behavior in head-fixed zebrafish, revealing that strikes are influenced by the distance to prey and can be manipulated by light intensity.
  • Findings indicated that both light intensity and contrast are important for distance estimation, with strikes being more frequent when prey is in the binocular visual field compared to the monocular field, laying groundwork for exploring the related neuronal mechanisms.

Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells and PD-1 antibodies (PD-1 Ab) are emergent immunotherapies with unprecedented efficacy. The presence of PD-1 on T cells contributes to hypofunction of CAR-T therapy and inhibition of PD-1 enhances anti-cancer effect of CAR-T cells. Therefore, the combination of CAR-T cells and PD-1 antibody is a promissing strategy for cancer treatment.

Using molecular statics simulations, we specifically focus on investigating the negative Poisson's ratio of the monolayer, few-layer, van der Waals, and ribbon penta-graphene. As a result, we provide evidence to show that the Poisson's ratio is the combination of bond stretching and angle rotating mechanism. The auxeticity of monolayer penta-graphene is due to the dominance of bond stretching.

Quinoline derivatives are important moieties in bioactive molecules and advanced materials. However, an efficient strategy to synthesize quinoline derivatives remains challenging. Herein, we describe an efficient and practical method for the synthesis of quinolines by Cu-catalyzed cyclization of 2-amino benzyl alcohol with ketones (or secondary alcohols) via an acceptorless dehydrogenation pathway.

Unlabelled: Salt stress is a major constraint across large rice production areas in Asia, because of the high sensitivity of modern rice varieties. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with salt tolerance in rice, we developed an F population from a cross between the salt-tolerant landrace, Kalarata, and the salt-sensitive parent, Azucena. F3 families from this population were screened and scored for salt tolerance using IRRI's (SES).

Article Synopsis
  • Vietnam has a significant thalassemia issue, with a study of 5,880 pregnant women revealing a 13.13% carrier frequency for thalassemia.
  • The breakdown of carriers included 7.82% for α-thalassemia and 5.31% for β-thalassemia, with common mutations identified in both types.
  • The study highlights the effectiveness of combining next-generation sequencing with gap-PCR for comprehensive thalassemia screening, estimating that around 5,021 babies could be born with severe thalassemia in Vietnam each year.

With its excellent mechanical and thermal properties, bilayer graphane is a promising material for realizing future nanoelectromechanical systems. In this study, we focus on the auxetic behavior of bilayer graphane under external loading along various directions through atomistic simulations. We numerically and theoretically reveal the mechanism of the auxeticity in terms of intrinsic interactions between carbon atoms by constructing bilayer graphane.

Background: Jewel orchid is the common name of several orchid species which can be alike in morphological characteristics, but variable in medicinal properties. At present, two DNA barcode loci, namely, maturase K (matK) and ribulose 1,5-biphosphate carboxylase (rbcL), are intensively utilized for plant identification. However, the discrimination effectiveness of these loci is variable among plant species.

Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is a rare congenital abnormality that may be classified as a first branchial arch syndrome. Patients with PRS who present with cleft palate have a deformity to the soft or hard palate of the maxilla that is repaired within the first year of birth. Despite the repair, patients may experience oronasal complications.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) continues to challenge Asia with pandemic potential. In Vietnam, there have been two major outbreaks occurring during 2011-2012 (>200,000 hospitalizations and >200 deaths) and more recently in 2018 (>130,000 hospitalizations and 17 deaths). Given the high burden and the complex epidemic dynamics of HFMD, synthesizing its clinical and epidemiological data remains essential to inform the development of appropriate interventions and design public health measures.

The rapid emergence of drug-resistant strains and novel viruses have motivated the search for new anti-infectious agents. In this study, the chemical compositions and cytotoxicity, as well as the antibacterial, antifungal, antitrichomonas, and antiviral activities of essential oils from the leaves, rhizomes, and whole plant of were investigated. The GC/MS analysis showed that β-pinene, -β-caryophyllene, and α-humulene were found at high concentrations in the essential oils.

The origami technique can provide inspiration for fabrication of novel three-dimensional (3D) structures with unique material properties from two-dimensional sheets. In particular, transformation of graphene sheets into complex 3D graphene structures is promising for functional nano-devices. However, practical realization of such structures is a great challenge.

Haemanthamine (HAE) has been proven as a potential anticancer agent. However, the therapeutic use of this plant-origin alkaloid to date is limited due to the chemical instability and poorly water-soluble characteristics of the agent. To overcome these challenges, we developed novel amphiphilic electrospun nanofibers (NFs) loaded with HAE, phosphatidylcholine (PC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and intended for a stabilizing platform (template) of self-assembled liposomes of the active agent.

We investigated enterovirus A71-associated hand, foot and mouth disease in Vietnam and found that, after replacing subgenogroup C4 in 2013, B5 remained the leading cause of this disease. In contrast with previous observations, this switch did not result in an explosive outbreak, and B5 evolution was driven by negative selection.

Low temperature is a major factor limiting rice growth and yield, and seedling is one of the developmental stages at which sensitivity to chilling stress is higher. Tolerance to chilling is a complex quantitative trait, so one of the most effective approaches to identify genes and pathways involved is to compare the stress-induced expression changes between tolerant and sensitive genotypes. Phenotypic responses to chilling of 13 Japonica cultivars were evaluated, and Thaibonnet and Volano were selected as sensitive and tolerant genotypes, respectively.
