A general system has been devised for the in vivo construction of Candida albicans integrative vectors in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The system is especially useful for the integration of genes in C. albicans that cannot be propagated in Escherichia coli, possibly because of their toxic effects.

Diketopiperazines produced by endophytic fungi found in association with two Asteraceae species.

Diketopiperazine (DKP) derivatives, named colletopiperazine, fusaperazine C and E as well as four known DKPs were isolated from cultures of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Penicillium crustosum, both endophytic fungi isolated from Viguiera robusta, and a Fusarium spp., an endophyte of Viguiera arenaria, respectively. Their structures were established on the basis of their spectroscopic data.

The antigen (PSA) is secreted by all prostatic epithelial cells and not exclusively by cancerous ones, so its concentration also increases in the presence of other prostatic diseases.

This article discusses the concept of quality of life in and at work, linked to health work management based on the evaluation of a work management instrument: the Career, Job, and Wage Plan. The aim was to analyze the plan as a work management technology in primary care in the Unified National Health System (SUS). The article discusses the plan in three municipalities in São Paulo State, Brazil: São Paulo, Guarulhos, and Campinas, in compliance with guidelines issued by the National Health Council in 2006, and using a qualitative survey conducted in 2007-2008.

Candida albicans and denture stomatitis: evaluation of its presence in the lesion, prosthesis, and blood.

Denture stomatitis is a primarily oral disease that affects denture wearers. The presence of Candida albicans in the palatal mucosa, on the internal surface of the maxillary denture, and in the blood of patients with denture stomatitis was evaluated. Although the results did not show C albicans in the bloodstream of patients, a strong relationship between denture stomatitis and Candida sp was confirmed for both the palatal mucosa and maxillary denture.

We have recently shown that umbilical cord tissue (UC) is richer in MSC than umbilical cord blood (UCB) but their origin and characteristics in blood as compared to the cord remains unknown. Here we compared, for the first time, the exonic protein-coding and intronic noncoding RNA (ncRNA) expression profiles of MSC from match-paired UC and UCB samples, harvested from the same donors, processed simultaneously and under the same culture conditions.

The major fungal pathogen Candida albicans has the metabolic flexibility to assimilate a wide range of nutrients in its human host. Previous studies have suggested that C. albicans can encounter glucose-poor microenvironments during infection and that the ability to use alternative non-fermentable carbon sources contributes to its virulence.

Ringo: discordance between the molecular and clinical manifestation in a golden retriever muscular dystrophy dog.

Of the various genetic homologues to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), the Golden Retriever Muscular Dystrophy (GRMD) dog, which presents a variable but usually severe and progressive muscle weakness, has the closest relevance to DMD in both clinical severity and histopathological change. Among 77 GRMD dogs born in our colony in Brazil, we have identified a very mildly affected dog, Ringo, born July 2003. Among his descendants, at least one male, Suflair, is also showing a mild course.

Results of the establishment of an organizational model in a cardiovascular surgery service.

This systematic literature review used nursing studies about 'ethics' published in the SCIELO database. The objective was to identify the ethical dilemmas of nursing, based on a literature review of nursing publications between 2002 and 2006. Forty publications were found, of which seventeen were selected.

Stages of change in parents' discussions with their children about HIV/Aids prevention.

This study aimed to know the stages of behavior change of parents in relation to communication held with their adolescent children on sex, sexuality and HIV/Aids prevention. Prochask and Diclement' stages of change model was used. Interviews were carried out with 26 parents of adolescents from a public school in Fortaleza, CE, Brazil.

Optical properties of metacycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline europium complexes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

Tetracycline possesses a great tendency to form complexes with a number of chemical species, particularly with Eu3+ ions. In this work we investigate the europium optical properties of three tetracyclines europium complexes: Metacycline (MTc), Oxytetracycline (OTc), and Chlortetracycline (CTc), in the presence and absence of hydrogen peroxide (HP). The results show that the emission band of EuOTc have enhancement in the presence of hydrogen peroxide.

Democracy and citizen's participation are part of several aspects of life, and are required in health education, representing the necessary connection to the satisfaction of this practice. Discourse and practices of health education in health services are discussed in this article according to two main categories: 1) democracy and citizenship, and 2) participation of individuals as citizens. One of the strategies used by health professionals to provide the individuals autonomy as health promoters is strengthening the individuals' capacity to participate in decisions that affects them.

Evaluation of femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for analysis of animal tissues.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the performance of femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LIBS) for the determination of elements in animal tissues. Sample pellets were prepared from certified reference materials, such as liver, kidney, muscle, hepatopancreas, and oyster, after cryogenic grinding assisted homogenization. Individual samples were placed in a two-axis computer-controlled translation stage that moved in the plane orthogonal to a beam originating from a Ti:Sapphire chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser system operating at 800 nm and producing a train of 840 microJ and 40 fs pulses at 90 Hz.

Selection of the most promising 2-substituted quinoline as antileishmanial candidate for clinical trials.

The antileishmanial evaluation of more than one hundred 2-substituted quinolines led us to identify three compounds for further studies: compound 1 (2-n-propylquinoline), compound 2 (2-(2methoxyethenyl)quinoline) and compound 3 (2-(2-hydroxyprop-2-enyl)quinoline). The final selection of a potential drug candidate was mainly based on chemical stability and acute oral toxicity as discriminating criteria. The most stable compound in various conditions was 2-n-propylquinoline (compound 1).
