In the present study, the biotechnological potential of the marine-derived fungus Peniophora sp. CBMAI 1063 was investigated in relation to Reactive Black 5 (RB5) dye decolorization and degradation using an integrated statistical design composed of Plackett-Burman design (P&B), central composite design (CCD), and response surface methodology (RSM). RB5 dye was effectively decolorized (94 %) in saline conditions, without any detection of mutagenic compounds, and simultaneously, 57 % of total organic carbon (TOC) was removed in 7 days.

The infection occurs from ingestion of mites from the Oribatida order containing cysticercoid larvae of the parasite.

Complication of post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (Swyer-James syndrome).

Swyer-James syndrome is a complication of post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans that causes inflammation and fibrosis of the bronchial walls. There are two types: asymptomatic, with most cases diagnosed in adults during routine radiological examinations; and symptomatic, most commonly found in children. Here, we report the case of a 6-year-old child with recurrent dyspnea since the age of 3, who showed signs and symptoms of bronchiolitis obliterans and radiological signs of bronchial wall thickening and air trapping.

LGR5 is a marker of normal and cancer stem cells in various tissues where it functions as a receptor for R-spondins and increases canonical Wnt signalling amplitude. Here we report that LGR5 is also highly expressed in a subset of high grade neuroblastomas. Neuroblastoma is a clinically heterogenous paediatric cancer comprising a high proportion of poor prognosis cases (~40%) which are frequently lethal.

Cell phone radiation effects on cytogenetic abnormalities of oral mucosal cells.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of exposure to cell phone electromagnetic radiation on the frequency of micronuclei, broken eggs cells, binucleated cells, and karyorrhexis in epithelial cells of the oral mucosa. The sample was composed of 60 cell phone users, who were non-smokers and non-drinkers, and had no clinically visible oral lesions. Cells were obtained from anatomical sites with the highest incidence of oral cancer: lower lip, border of the tongue, and floor of the mouth.

Improved structural method for T-cell cross-reactivity prediction.

Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs) are the key players of adaptive cellular immunity, being able to identify and eliminate infected cells through the interaction with peptide-loaded major histocompatibility complexes class I (pMHC-I). Despite the high specificity of this interaction, a given lymphocyte is actually able to recognize more than just one pMHC-I complex, a phenomenon referred as cross-reactivity. In the present work we describe the use of pMHC-I structural features as input for multivariate statistical methods, to perform standardized structure-based predictions of cross-reactivity among viral epitopes.

Carcass and meat quality traits in Nellore and F1 Nellore-Araguaia crosses.

We evaluated and compared carcass traits and meat quality in Nellore cattle and F1 crosses between Nellore and Araguaia, where 17 individuals were from the Nellore group and 19 were ½ Nellore and ½ Araguaia crosses. All animals belonged to the same birth season and were raised in pasture systems under the same nutritional, environmental, and management conditions. When the animals reached slaughter weight, they were taken to an industrial slaughterhouse where food was not provided for 24 h (free access to water); they were then stunned, bled, the leather was removed, and they were eviscerated.

Research Design: Morphological and structural connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data were acquired from 16 participants with mTBI and nine participants without previous head injury.
