Macrophages are classified upon activation as classical activated M1 and M2 anti-inflammatory regulatory populations. This macrophage polarization is well characterized in humans and mice, but M1/M2 profile in cattle has been far less explored. Bos primigenius taurus (taurine) and Bos primigenius indicus (indicine) cattle display contrasting levels of resistance to infection and parasitic diseases such as C57BL/6J and Balb/c murine experimental models of parasite infection outcomes based on genetic background.

Article Synopsis
  • Homotherium was a large, extinct genus of scimitar-toothed cats with unique physical traits suited for hunting large Pleistocene mammals.
  • Genetic analyses indicate that Homotherium diverged from modern cats about 22.5 million years ago, showing no signs of interbreeding with current felids.
  • The study revealed high genetic diversity in Homotherium, suggesting it was potentially more abundant than indicated by the fossil record, and highlights its adaptations in vision, behavior, and hunting strategies.

Coronavirus disease, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is mainly transmitted through droplets, but other ways of transmission have been hypothesized. We report a case of vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in a preterm born to an infected mother, confirmed by the presence of the virus in the neonatal blood, nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs collected in the first half an hour of life. The neonate presented with acute respiratory distress, similar to the findings in severely affected adults.

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to compare genomic changes in sinonasal intestinal-type adenocarcinoma (sITAC) and colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC), as they are histomorphologically indistinguishable. This can cause diagnostic difficulties as sinonasal tumours initially diagnosed as sITAC may represent metastasis from CRC, a frequent cancer. Previous studies have not uncovered the underlying mechanism behind the histomorphological resemblance.

Repeat expansion mutations in the C9ORF72 gene are the most common genetic cause of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Repeat-associated non-AUG translation of this expansion produces dipeptide repeat proteins (DRPs). The arginine containing DRPs, polyGR and polyPR, are consistently reported to be the most toxic.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to assess how accurately three clinical tests (lateral step, tandem gait, and single-leg stance) identify reduced hip abductor muscle strength in older women and how these tests change diagnostic certainty.
  • A total of 123 older women underwent clinical tests and was evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer to measure hip abductor strength, with the results indicating that lateral step and tandem gait times correlated with muscle strength but only had low diagnostic accuracy.
  • The combination of lateral step and tandem gait significantly improved the post-test probability, showing an increased chance of detecting muscle weakness when both tests were positive, making them valuable and cost-effective assessment tools for clinicians.

Although sled dogs are one of the most specialized groups of dogs, their origin and evolution has received much less attention than many other dog groups. We applied a genomic approach to investigate their spatiotemporal emergence by sequencing the genomes of 10 modern Greenland sled dogs, an ~9500-year-old Siberian dog associated with archaeological evidence for sled technology, and an ~33,000-year-old Siberian wolf. We found noteworthy genetic similarity between the ancient dog and modern sled dogs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine if lower limb muscle strength could predict the risk of first falls in older adults living independently, measuring muscle strength using an isokinetic dynamometer.
  • Researchers monitored 101 participants, who had no fall history in the last year, via monthly phone calls to track any fall incidents over a year.
  • Results showed no significant link between lower limb muscle strength and falls; thus, it suggests exploring other factors that might contribute to falls in older adults to develop preventive strategies.

Diatoms are an ecologically fundamental and highly diverse group of algae, dominating marine primary production in both open-water and coastal communities. The diatoms include both centric species, which may have radial or polar symmetry, and the pennates, which include raphid and araphid species and arose within the centric lineage. Here, we use combined microscopic and molecular information to reclassify a diatom strain CCMP470, previously annotated as a radial centric species related to Leptocylindrus danicus, as an araphid pennate species in the staurosiroid lineage, within the genus Plagiostriata.

Excess evaporation within the Persian (also referred as the Arabian) Gulf induces an inverse-estuary circulation. Surface waters are imported, via the Strait of Hormuz, while saltier waters are exported in the deeper layers. Using output of a 1/12-Degree horizontal resolution ocean general circulation model, the spatial structure and time variability of the circulation and the exchanges of volume and salt through the Strait of Hormuz are investigated in detail.
