Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to create a better model for inducing dietary hyperoxaluria and nephrocalcinosis in rats, as current methods have significant limitations and complications.
  • It involves testing male albino Wistar rats divided into groups receiving different diets, including a control group, ethylene glycol, potassium oxalate, and spinach extract with varying oxalate levels for 28 days.
  • Results showed that rats fed spinach extract developed hyperoxaluria with less kidney damage compared to those given ethylene glycol or potassium oxalate, indicating it is a more effective and safer method for inducing the condition.

Oxalates stimulate alterations in renal epithelial cells and thereby induce calcium oxalate (CaOx) stone formation. Bacillus subtilis YvrK gene encodes for oxalate decarboxylase (OxdC) which degrades oxalate to formate and CO. The present work is aimed to clone the oxdC gene in a mammalian expression vector pcDNA and transfect into Human Embryonic Kidney 293 (HEK293) cells and evaluate the oxdC expression, cell survival rate and oxalate degrading efficiency.
