The images obtained by X-Ray or computed tomography (CT) in adverse conditions may be contaminated with noise that can affect the detection of diseases. A large number of image processing techniques (filters) have been proposed to remove noise. These techniques depend on the type of noise present in the image.

Fast parallel algorithm for CT image reconstruction.

In X-ray computed tomography (CT) the X rays are used to obtain the projection data needed to generate an image of the inside of an object. The image can be generated with different techniques. Iterative methods are more suitable for the reconstruction of images with high contrast and precision in noisy conditions and from a small number of projections.

Estimated radiation dose reduction using non-linear diffusion method in computed radiography.

In this paper we use a non-linear diffusion method to filter the inherent noise in a Computed Radiography (CR) for reducing the dose absorbed by the patients especially children in pediatric applications, related with the exposure mAs. The method is implemented in order to create a lower CR dose based on the selection of lower X-ray exposure and with a reduction of the noise using a non-linear diffusion method. The impact of several milliAmpere-seconds (mAs) setting on image quality has been studied using the RANDO phantom.

[Pathological features of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) renal scar CT-imaging in a swine model].

Purpose: To analyze the changes in vicinal kidney parenchyma after percutaneous RFA.

Materials And Methods: [corrected] Twenty-four CT-guided RFA procedures were performed on six pigs using 2 cm LeVeen coaxial needles. We studied volume, morphology, cavitation and enhancement of the ablation zones (AZ) before and after the procedure on contrast-injected CT-scans.

Long-term oral administration of melatonin improves spatial learning and memory and protects against cholinergic degeneration in middle-aged Ts65Dn mice, a model of Down syndrome.

Ts65Dn mice (TS), the most commonly used model of Down syndrome (DS), exhibit phenotypic characteristics of this condition. Both TS mice and DS individuals present cognitive disturbances, age-related cholinergic degeneration, and increased brain expression of β-amyloid precursor protein (AβPP). These neurodegenerative processes may contribute to the progressive cognitive decline observed in DS.

Response of the physiological parameters of mango fruit (transpiration, water relations and antioxidant system) to its light and temperature environment.

Depending on the position of the fruit in the tree, mango fruit may be exposed to high temperature and intense light conditions that may lead to metabolic and physiological disorders and affect yield and quality. The present study aimed to determine how mango fruit adapted its functioning in terms of fruit water relations, epicarp characteristics and the antioxidant defence system in peel, to environmental conditions. The effect of contrasted temperature and light conditions was evaluated under natural solar radiation and temperature by comparing well-exposed and shaded fruit at three stages of fruit development.

GNbAC1, a humanized monoclonal antibody against the envelope protein of multiple sclerosis-associated endogenous retrovirus: a first-in-humans randomized clinical study.

Background: Human endogenous retrovirus (HERV) genes represent about 8% of the human genome. A member of the HERV family W, the Multiple Sclerosis-Associated Retrovirus (MSRV) gene, encodes an envelope protein (Env), which can activate a proinflammatory and autoimmune cascade through its interaction with Toll-like receptor 4. Due to its proinflammatory property and an inhibitory effect on oligodendrocyte precursor cell differentiation, the MSRV-Env protein could play a crucial role in the pathogeny of multiple sclerosis.

Distribution of metals and trace elements in adult and juvenile penguins from the Antarctic Peninsula area.

The presence of metals in the Antarctic environment is principally a natural phenomenon caused by geochemical characteristics of the region, although some anthropogenic activities can increase these natural levels. Antarctic penguins present several of the characteristics of useful sentinels of pollution in Antarctica such as they are long-lived species situated at the top of food web. The concentrations of Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Pb were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry in samples of liver, kidney, muscle, bone, feather, and stomach contents of gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguin (12 adults, five juveniles) from carcasses of naturally dead individuals collected opportunistically in the Antarctic Peninsula area.

The GENOTEND chip: a new tool to analyse gene expression in muscles of beef cattle for beef quality prediction.

Background: Previous research programmes have described muscle biochemical traits and gene expression levels associated with beef tenderness. One of our results concerning the DNAJA1 gene (an Hsp40) was patented. This study aims to confirm the relationships previously identified between two gene families (heat shock proteins and energy metabolism) and beef quality.

Lack of behavioral and cognitive effects of chronic ethosuximide and gabapentin treatment in the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome.

The Ts65Dn (TS) mouse model of Down syndrome (DS) displays a number of behavioral, neuromorphological and neurochemical phenotypes of the syndrome. Altered GABAergic transmission appears to contribute to the mechanisms responsible for the cognitive impairments in TS mice. Increased functional expression of the trisomic gene encoding an inwardly rectifying potassium channel, subfamily J, member 6 (KCNJ6) has been reported in DS and TS mice, along with the consequent impairment in GAB Aergic function.

Rare germline large rearrangements in the BRCA1/2 genes and eight candidate genes in 472 patients with breast cancer predisposition.

Hereditary breast cancers account for up to 5-10 % of breast cancers and a majority are related to the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. However, many families with breast cancer predisposition do not carry any known mutations for BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. We explored the incidence of rare large rearrangements in the coding, noncoding and flanking regions of BRCA1/2 and in eight other candidate genes--CHEK2, BARD1, ATM, RAD50, RAD51, BRIP1, RAP80 and PALB2.

Gastrointestinal parasites in Chinstrap Penguins from Deception Island, South Shetlands, Antarctica.

Knowledge about parasites of Antarctic birds is fragmented and scarce. The aim of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of gastrointestinal parasites of the Chinstrap Penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) from Deception Island (South Shetlands, Antarctica). Gastrointestinal tracts of 64 fresh dead individuals (61 chicks and three adults) were collected from December 2006 to February 2009 and examined for macroparasites.

Obtaining polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentration ratios and molecular markers for residential wood combustion: Temuco, a case study.

It is known that residential wood combustion (RWC) is an important source of fine particle emissions. The purpose of this work was to characterize the chemical composition of the particulate matter present in the Temuco urban atmosphere during winter, specifically the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) profile, because PAHs are considered to be among the key compounds in particulate matter toxicity. During the 2008 winter monitoring campaign, samples of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters of < or = 10 (PM10) and < or = 2.

Prognostic value of preoperative coronary computed tomography angiography in patients treated by orthotopic liver transplantation.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of 64-slice coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography in patients treated by orthotopic liver transplantation, and to compare prognostic values of CT angiography and dobutamine stress echocardiography in the same population.

Methods: Eighty-two consecutive patients, without known coronary artery disease, who underwent orthotopic liver transplantation, were included in this study. A CT angiography was performed along with usual explorations including dobutamine stress echography.

Degassing cascades in a shear-thinning viscoelastic fluid.

We report the experimental study of the degassing dynamics through a thin layer of shear-thinning viscoelastic fluid when a constant air flow is imposed at its bottom. The fluid is an aqueous solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium salicylate (NaSal). Over a large range of parameters, the air is periodically released through a series of successive bubbles, hereafter named cascades.

Appearance of gas collections after scuba diving death: a computed tomography study in a porcine model.

Introduction: Postmortem computed tomography can easily demonstrate gas collections after diving accidents. Thus, it is often used to support the diagnosis of air embolism secondary to barotrauma. However, many other phenomenons (putrefaction, resuscitation maneuvers, and postmortem tissue offgassing) can also cause postmortem gas effusions and lead to a wrong diagnosis of barotrauma.

Library-based discovery and characterization of daphnane diterpenes as potent and selective HIV inhibitors in Daphne gnidium.

Despite the existence of an extended armamentarium of effective synthetic drugs to treat HIV, there is a continuing need for new potent and affordable drugs. Given the successful history of natural product based drug discovery, a library of close to one thousand plant and fungal extracts was screened for antiretroviral activity. A dichloromethane extract of the aerial parts of Daphne gnidium exhibited strong antiretroviral activity and absence of cytotoxicity.

Morphology of air invasion in an immersed granular layer.

We report a study of the paths formed by a finite volume of air gently injected at the base of an immersed granular material. A two-dimensional model, based on experimental observations, shows that the typical height and width of the region explored by the branched path depends not only on the injected volume V, but also on a dimensionless parameter χ which accounts for the relative effects of the gravity and capillarity. For a given injected volume V, larger gravity effects lead to taller and narrower structures; for a given χ, the typical height and width of the structure scale like V(1/2) and V(1/4), respectively, while the typical gaseous fraction in the corresponding region increases accordingly like V(1/4).

[Radiology as seen by medical students].

Purpose: To determine the impact of exposing medical students to medical imaging during the first year of the second cycle of medical school (DCEM1) on their perception of this medical specialty and the acquisition of its basic concepts.

Materials And Methods: All students in the 2007-2008 graduation class entering into the first year of the second cycle of medical school were anonymously enrolled into this project that included pre-rotation and post-rotation questionnaires, theory classes followed by clinical rotations with clearly predetermined objectives.

Results: A total of 108 students were enrolled, with 70% being females.

[A rare cause of cardiogenic shock treated by extracorporeal life support: catecholamine secreting paraganglioma].

Phaeochromocytoma and paraganglioma are chromaffine tumours secreting catecholamines. They are usually revealed by a paroxystic hypertensive crisis associated with headaches, palpitation and sweats. We reported a case of a young patient presenting a state of life threatening cardiogenic shock as unusual revelation of this tumour, requiring the implementation of an extracorporeal life support until myocardial recovery.

Venting dynamics of an immersed granular layer.

Air is injected locally at the base of an immersed granular bed. The gas, which is forced to flow gently through the material, creates several paths between the grains. We observe that the latter gas venting results in the emission of bubbles in a localized region at the free surface.

[Improvement of pulmonary angiography in the framework of a maintenance of certification].

Purpose: This evaluation of clinical practices (pulmonary embolus) was performed to evaluate the quality of CT pulmonary angiograms for suspected acute pulmonary embolus.

Materials And Methods: Five validated criteria evaluating both the acquisition technique and the quality of image interpretation were selected: slice thickness, pulmonary arterial enhancement over 250 HU, caudocranial acquisition, visualization of fifth order pulmonary arterial branches, and right-left ventricular ratio in the presence of pulmonary embolus. Forty CT pulmonary angiograms were reviewed before and after implementation of a practice quality improvement program: modification of acquisition protocol, training of medical and paramedical staff, and implementation of a standardized radiology report.
