Traditional postero-medial ankle approach for Bartonícek type III in Volkmann Fractures: Is it useful?

Introduction: There is evidence that the presence of a posterior malleolus fracture (PMF) worsens the prognosis of ankle fractures, making conservative treatment a poor choice. PMFs include a heterogeneous group of bone injury patterns that are sometimes associated to medial malleolus extensions, as well as fibula fractures or syndesmotic damage. This requires the surgeon to be well-versed in anatomy to choose the appropriate surgical approach.

Clinical Trial With a Depigmented, Polymerized Mite Mixture Extract at Maximum Concentrations.

Background: Efficacy of allergen immunotherapy is dose-dependent; however, high doses of allergen may imply a greater risk of adverse reactions.

Objective: To assess the safety and tolerability of subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) with mixtures of mite allergen extracts, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus/Blomia tropicalis (Dpt/Bt) and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus/Lepidoglyphus destructor (Dpt/Ld) at maximum concentrations, in adult patients with allergic rhinitis or rhinoconjunctivitis, and controlled allergic asthma due to a clinically relevant sensitisation to these mites.

Methods: An open-label, noncontrolled, nonrandomised, phase IIb clinical trial was carried out in three hospitals in Spain between September 2014 and May 2018.

Training in Lumbar Pedicle Screw Instrumentation Using a 3D-Printed Model: From Validation to Transferability Onto a Cadaver Model.

Lumbar pedicle screw placement in spinal surgery is complex and prone to errors, with notable risks to patients. Standard training methods, such as mentorship in operating rooms, pose safety concerns, prompting the need for alternative training tools. This study aimed to validate and use a three-dimensional (3D)-printed simulation model for lumbar pedicle screw insertion training and assess its effectiveness compared with standard methods.

An Analysis of the Digestive and Reproductive Tract Microbiota in Infertile Women with Obesity.

Previous studies have linked the microbiome of distinct body habitats to obesity and infertility; however, the often-divergent results observed have left the role of the so-called "second genome" in obese infertile patients incompletely explored. Here, we present a prospective observational multicenter study of oral, gut, endometrial, and vaginal microbiota of infertile patients classified according to BMI. Patients collected saliva/fecal samples, while vaginal/endometrial fluid samples were collected in the clinic.

Methods: Of a total of 21 cadaveric pieces, 11 were female and 10 were male; 9 ankles/right foot and 11 ankles/left foot.

Severe community-acquired pneumonia compared to severe community-acquired Acinetobacter baumannii pneumonia in Reunion Island: A retrospective study.

Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) has emerged in the last decades as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in tropical and subtropical regions. We previously conducted the first investigation on this topic in France with a case series of severe CAP-Ab in Reunion Island over an eight-year period. In the present work, we aim to highlight the specific aspects of CAP-Ab by comparing our case series with an historical cohort (PAC_RUN), obtained by retrospective chart review (2016-2021) of severe community-acquired pneumonia cases on Reunion Island, in which CAP-Ab was ruled out.

Impact of UV-B Photoaging on Chlorpyrifos Adsorption by PET Microplastics: Insights from Experimental and DFT Analysis.

Microplastics (MPs) in the environment pose a persistent concern, as these plastic particles can adversely impact both aquatic ecosystems and human health. MPs are subject to natural weathering and aging processes, such as photodegradation, which significantly alter their surface morphology and physicochemical properties, thereby influencing their fate, transport, and sorption behavior. To better understand how aging affects these properties and to elucidate the mechanisms behind the interactions with the chlorpyrifos pesticide, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) microplastics (<100 μm) were subjected to accelerated photoaging in a UV-B chamber for varying exposure times.

Evaluating BTEX in vehicle exhaust gas: A fast and efficient approach using SPME and GC-BID.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and the xylene isomers (m, p, and o-xylene) (BTEX) are known for their harmful effects on human health and have been extensively studied across various environmental matrices. However, quantifying BTEX in exhaust gases poses challenges due to the complexity of the matrices. In this study, we investigated a method development strategy involving solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and gas chromatography coupled with a dielectric barrier discharge ionization Detector (BID) for quantifying BTEX emitted from internal combustion engines operating at idle.

Mask side-effects are related to gender in long-term CPAP: results from the InterfaceVent real-life study.

Background: Over the past three decades, our understanding of sleep apnea in women has advanced, revealing disparities in pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment compared to men. However, no real-life study to date has explored the relationship between mask-related side effects (MRSEs) and gender in the context of long-term CPAP.

Methods: The InterfaceVent-CPAP study is a prospective real-life cross-sectional study conducted in an apneic adult cohort undergoing at least 3 months of CPAP with unrestricted mask-access (34 different masks, no gender specific mask series).

Physical Properties of Cellulose Derivative-Based Edible Films Elaborated with Liposomes Encapsulating Grape Seed Tannins.

Combined use of edible films (EF) with nanoencapsulation systems could be an effective alternative for improving the films' physical properties and maintaining bioactive compounds' stability. This research work focuses on the combined use of EF of cellulose-derived biopolymers enriched with liposomes that encapsulate grape seed tannins and on the subsequent evaluation of the physical properties and wettability. Tannin-containing liposomal suspensions (TLS) showed 570.

Associations between Non-Essential Trace Elements in Women's Biofluids and IVF Outcomes in Euploid Single-Embryo Transfer Cycles.

Previous studies have found inconsistent associations between heavy metals and metalloids (cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic), and reproductive outcomes. The biofluid concentrations of ten non-essential trace elements (Hg, Pb, As, Ba, Sr, Rb, Cs, Sn, Ni, and Co) were evaluated in 51 Spanish women undergoing ICSI, PGT-A, and SET/FET. Nine out of ten non-essential elements were detectable in follicular fluid, whole blood, and urine collected the day of vaginal oocyte retrieval (VOR) and the day of embryo transfer and then analyzed by ICP-MS or Tricell DMA-80 for mercury.

[Clinical features of blastic plasmacytoid dendritic neoplasm in Chile: report of 10 cases].

Background: Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare malignant tumor with a dismal prognosis, with isolated case reports in Chile. The BPDCN can present skin and bone marrow compromise, and its diagnosis is frequently confused with other pathologies. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and immunophenotypical features of BPDCN in the Chilean population.

Introduction: Hodgkin's lymphoma is a B-cell neoplasm with a good prognosis but a poor response to chemotherapy in refractory or relapsed cases. Brentuximab-vedotin is an anti-CD30 monoclonal antibody approved for use in these cases. This study aims to describe the clinical experience of patients treated with brentuximab-vedotin through expanded access modality.

Effectiveness and Acceptability of Targeted Text Message Reminders in Colorectal Cancer Screening: Randomized Controlled Trial (M-TICS Study).

Background: Mobile phone-based SMS text message reminders have the potential to improve colorectal cancer screening participation rates.

Objective: This study assessed the effectiveness and acceptability of adding targeted SMS text message reminders to the standard procedure for those who picked up but did not return their screening kit at the pharmacy within 14 days in a colorectal cancer screening program in Catalonia, Spain.

Methods: We performed a randomized control trial among individuals who picked up a fecal immunochemical test (FIT) kit for colorectal cancer screening at the pharmacy but did not return it within 14 days.
