The impact of a school-based gardening intervention on intentions and behaviour related to fruit and vegetable consumption in children.

A total of 77 children (34 boys, 43 girls, mean age ± standard deviation = 9 ± 1 years) participated in this study; 46 children (intervention) undertook a 12-week school gardening programme and 31 children acted as controls. Measures of the Theory of Planned Behaviour and fruit and vegetable consumption were taken pre- and post-intervention. Repeated measures analysis of variance and hierarchical regression analysis indicated that the intervention group increased daily consumption of fruits and vegetables and increased intentions, attitudes, norms, and perceived behavioural control related to fruit and vegetable consumption.

Feasibility research on the potential use of Migrant Workers Scan data to improve migration and population statistics.

The ONS Centre for Demography is currently researching the use of a number of administrative data sources to improve population and migration statistics as part of the Inter-departmental Migration Statistics Improvement Programme. This article reports early findings from the initial research into one of the sources, the Migrant Workers Scan (MWS). The MWS contains information on all adult overseas nationals who have registered for, and been allocated, a National Insurance Number (NINo).

Daily light exposure profiles in older non-resident extreme morning and evening types.

Differences in daily light exposure profiles have been reported, with younger M-types shown to spend more time in bright light, especially in the morning, compared with E-types. This study aimed to investigate how patterns of daily light exposure in older non-resident M-types and E-types compare. Sleep diaries were kept during actigraphic measurement of activity and light using the Actiwatch-L for 14 days in 12 M-types [eight females, mean +/- standard deviation (SD) Horne-Ostberg Morning-Eveningness Questionnaire (HO MEQ) score 75.

The impact of neuropathic pain on relationships.

Aim: This paper is a report of a study exploring the impact of neuropathic pain on family, social and working relationships among patients at a pain clinic serving a large urban area.

Background: Neuropathic pain is a particularly distressing type of chronic pain which is extremely difficult to manage successfully. It produces a range of unpleasant symptoms and adversely affects patients' quality of life, but little is known about its personal impact.

'You ain't going to say...I've got a problem down there': workplace-based prostate health promotion with men.

Prostate health has emerged as a key health issue for men. Nearly 10,000 men die from prostate cancer each year and many more live with non-cancerous, but debilitating, prostate conditions. Despite the widespread prevalence, evidence suggests that men lack knowledge about male cancers and conditions, and are more likely to ignore signs and delay seeking help.
