There is strong covariation between the thermal physiology of ectothermic animals and their thermal environment. Spatial and temporal differences in the thermal environment across a species' range may result in changes in thermal preferences between populations of that species. Alternatively, thermoregulatory-based microhabitat selection can allow individuals to maintain similar body temperatures across a broad thermal gradient.
