Glioblastoma multiforme is the most aggressive type of primary brain tumor in humans. Its invasive growth is associated with cluster of differentiation (CD)133 cancer stem cells (CSCs) and CD133 differentiated glioblastoma cells (DGCs) with aggressive phenotype, which are developed under the influence of transforming growth factor (TGF)-β. The present study aimed to compare the proteomes of CD133 CSCs and CD133 DGCs stimulated by TGF-β, as well as the expression levels of the main proteins responsible for activating the signaling pathway of receptor interactions with the extracellular matrix (ECM).

The automatic detection of exudates in color eye fundus images is an important task in applications such as diabetic retinopathy screening. The presented work has been undertaken in the framework of the TeleOphta project, whose main objective is to automatically detect normal exams in a tele-ophthalmology network, thus reducing the burden on the readers. A new clinical database, e-ophtha EX, containing precisely manually contoured exudates, is introduced.

The hydrophobic cavity of the C-terminal domain (CTD) of HIV-1 capsid has been recently validated as potential target for antiviral drugs by peptide-based inhibitors; however, there is no report yet of any small molecule compounds that target this hydrophobic cavity. In order to fill this gap and discover new classes of ant-HIV-1 inhibitors, we undertook a docking-based virtual screening and subsequent analog search, and medicinal chemistry approaches to identify small molecule inhibitors against this target. This article reports for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, identification of diverse classes of inhibitors that efficiently inhibited the formation of mature-like viral particles verified under electron microscope (EM) and showed potential as anti-HIV-1 agents in a viral infectivity assay against a wide range of laboratory-adapted as well as primary isolates in MT-2 cells and PBMC.

Aims: To compare the results of fundus photography using a new non-mydriatic digital camera with the results of reference standard of Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) retinal photographs, for the detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR).

Methods: Fundus colour photographs were taken with a Topcon non-mydriatic camera of 147 eyes of 74 diabetic patients, without pupillary dilation (five overlapping fields of 45 degrees; posterior pole, nasal, temporal, superior and inferior). Three retinal specialists classified the photographs in a masked fashion, as showing no DR or mild non-proliferative DR (NPDR) not requiring referral, moderate or more severe NPDR and/or macular oedema, or as non-gradable image requiring referral.
