Latex proteins from Plumeria pudica reduce ligature-induced periodontitis in rats.

Background: Previous studies have shown that latex proteins from Plumeria pudica (LPPp) have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects in rats of LPPp on ligature-induced periodontitis, an inflammatory disease.

Methods: The animals were divided into groups: saline (animals without induction of periodontitis), periodontitis (induced periodontitis and untreated) and LPPp (induced periodontitis and treated with 40 mg/kg).

Efficacy of FLU-v, a broad-spectrum influenza vaccine, in a randomized phase IIb human influenza challenge study.

FLU-v, developed by PepTcell (SEEK), is a peptide vaccine aiming to provide a broadly protective cellular immune response against influenza A and B. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-center, phase IIb efficacy and safety trial was conducted. Method: A longitudinal prospective study with a quantitative approach was carried out in 2016 with first-year nursing students from two universities in the state of São Paulo. The following instruments were applied at the beginning and the end of the first school year: an instrument for Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index.

Objective: Scorpion stings are registered worldwide, but the incidence and the features of the envenomations vary depending on the region. The aim of this review was to summarize the epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic data worldwide regarding humans stung by scorpions.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted through the online databases of the Virtual Health Library (VHL), which hosts Medline and the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Informational (LILACS) database.

Epidemiological study of alendronate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in the southeast of Scotland.

We aimed to establish the incidence of alendronate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) in the southeast of Scotland, and to assess the effect of corticosteroids on it. We studied a prospective case series of patients between June 2004 and March 2012 separated into steroid and non-steroid groups. There were 34 cases of alendronate-related ONJ and 78732 drug patient years (DPY) of alendronate, making the overall occurrence 43.

Gene expression profiling reveals biological pathways responsible for phenotypic heterogeneity between UK and Sri Lankan oral squamous cell carcinomas.

Objectives: It is well recognized that oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cases from Asia that are associated with betel quid chewing are phenotypically distinct to those from Western countries that are predominantly caused by smoking/drinking, but the molecular basis of these differences are largely unknown. The aim of this study is to examine gene expression, related carcinogenic pathways and molecular processes that might be responsible for the phenotypic heterogeneity of OSCC between UK and Sri Lankan population groups.

An epidemiological study of alendronate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws. A case series from the south-east of Scotland with attention given to case definition and prevalence.

A close case study series of alendronate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws (AONJ) is presented. A consistency of case definition with a minimal reporting requirement was attempted as recommended by the task force of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. A hierarchy of evidence focussing on 7 categories of interest was included for each case.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity rarely harbours oncogenic human papillomavirus.

Although it is now well established that a significant proportion of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) harbour oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) sequences, the frequency with which these sequences are detected in oral SCC (excluding oropharyngeal subsites) is highly variable. In an attempt to establish the true prevalence of HPV-16 and HPV-18 subtypes in oral SCC, we screened 142 consecutive cases from a UK cohort using both conventional PCR with consensus primers and type-specific quantitative PCR (Q-PCR), while at the same time employing a rigorous protocol to avoid sample contamination. Q-PCR revealed HPV sequences in five cases; two contained HPV-16 alone, two HPV-18 alone, and one sample carried both genotypes.

Early stage diagnosis of oral cancer using 1H NMR-based metabolomics.

Oral cancer is the eighth most common cancer worldwide and represents a significant disease burden. If detected at an early stage, survival from oral cancer is better than 90% at 5 years, whereas late stage disease survival is only 30%. Therefore, there is an obvious clinical utility for novel metabolic markers that help to diagnose oral cancer at an early stage and to monitor treatment response.

Relevant principal component analysis applied to the characterisation of Portuguese heather honey.

The main purpose of this study was the characterisation of 'Serra da Lousã' heather honey by using novel statistical methodology, relevant principal component analysis, in order to assess the correlations between production year, locality and composition. Herein, we also report its chemical composition in terms of sugars, glycerol and ethanol, and physicochemical parameters. Sugars profiles from 'Serra da Lousã' heather and 'Terra Quente de Trás-os-Montes' lavender honeys were compared and allowed the discrimination: 'Serra da Lousã' honeys do not contain sucrose, generally exhibit lower contents of turanose, trehalose and maltose and higher contents of fructose and glucose.

Toward the prediction of the activity of antioxidants: experimental and theoretical study of the gas-phase acidities of flavonoids.

The relative gas-phase acidities were determined for eight flavonoids, applying the kinetic method, by means of electrospray-ion trap mass spectrometry. The experimental acidity order, myricetin > luteolin > quercetin > (+/-)-taxifolin > kaempferol > apigenin > (+)-catechin > (+/-)-naringenin shows good agreement with the order obtained by theoretical calculations at the B3LYP/6-311 + G(2d,2p)//HF/6-31G(d) level. Moreover, these calculations provide the gas-phase acidities of the different OH groups for each flavonoid.

Epstein-Barr virus-associated cancers: aetiology and treatment.

Evidence implicates Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the pathogenesis of tumours arising in lymphoid or epithelial tissue. EBV may adopt different forms of latent infection in different tumour types, reflecting the complex interplay between virus and host-cell environment. Immune response is another important factor influencing EBV gene expression, and viral latent proteins to which immunodominant CTL responses are directed (namely the EBNA3 family), are downregulated in virus-associated tumours arising in overtly immunocompetent individuals.
