Impairment of the Plasmodium falciparum erythrocytic cycle induced by angiotensin peptides.

Plasmodium falciparum causes the most serious complications of malaria and is a public health problem worldwide with over 2 million deaths each year. The erythrocyte invasion mechanisms by Plasmodium sp. have been well described, however the physiological aspects involving host components in this process are still poorly understood.

Na(+)-ATPase and protein kinase C are targets to 1-O-hexadecylphosphocoline (miltefosine) in Trypanosoma cruzi.

Miltefosine has been shown to be a very active compound against Trypanosoma cruzi. Here, we evaluated the effects of miltefosine on the activity of the Na(+)-ATPase and protein kinase C (PKC) present in the plasma membrane of T. cruzi.

Novel 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamine chlorides derived from natural piperine as trypanocidal agents: chemical and biological studies.

We herein describe the synthesis and characterization of nine new 1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-phenylamine chlorides derived from natural piperine. We evaluate their toxic effects against the different evolutive forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, and the host cell (murine macrophages). The results obtained show that mesoionic hydrochloride MI possesses the best activity profile.
