Introduction: The Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery protocol is the most recent addition to cardiac treatment. In this paper, we aimed to test the safety and viability of this protocol in our hospital to improve our standard of care.
Methods: This study was conducted as an experimental study with a historical control at the Maritime Heart Center, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Extensive drug treatment for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) includes low molecular weight heparin (LMWH). At therapeutic doses of LMWH, there is an increased risk of bleeding complications. Spontaneous, non-traumatic bleeding into the retroperitoneum is a life-threatening condition that can progress very rapidly.

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of and risk factors for laryngotracheal complications following cardiac surgery.
Methods: A retrospective chart review of patients at high risk for laryngotracheal complications following cardiac surgery between 2006 and 2016 was performed.
Aortodecubital fistula is a pathologic communication between aorta and a decubitus ulcer. It is very rarely encountered vascular condition in abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), with difficult diagnostics and high mortality. Patients often present with systemic and local infection and are at risk for hemorrhage.

High expression of miR-30c was associated with better survival in the whole cohort. When the cohort was split into male and female subcohorts, decreased miR-30c expression in tumor compared to adjacent tissue was observed only in males.

Pseudocysts most often expand into surrounding structures, just rarely into the mediastinum. Usually, they present with abdominal pain, and the symptoms correlate with the location of the pseudocysts.

The aim of this study was to analyze estrogen receptor beta mRNA (ERbeta) expression in patients with CRC with respect to their gender and clinicopathological features. Since cancer progression is accompanied by tumor vascularization, VEGF-A (vascular endothelial growth factor A) transcription was analyzed along with ERbeta mRNA.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules that have been extensively studied in tumours, since changes in their levels can reveal patient prognosis. Cancer progression is also influenced by the circadian system whose functioning is based on the rhythmic expression of clock genes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFRecent evidence supports the important role of the circadian system in cancer progression in humans. The aim of the present study is to evaluate clock (cry1, cry2 and per2) and clock-controlled (vascular endothelial growth factor-a, early growth response protein 1 and estrogen receptor β) gene expression in colorectal cancer and adjacent tissue and identify a possible link between survival of patients and expression of above mentioned genes. The study includes 64 patients of both sexes with previously diagnosed colorectal cancer.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFColorectal cancer (CRC) exhibits differences in its features depending on the location of the tumor. The role of the circadian system in carcinogenesis is accepted, and many studies report different clock gene expression in tumors compared to healthy tissue. However, little attention is given to the changes in clock genes in tumors arising from various locations across the colon and rectum.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFmiRNAs are small regulatory RNA molecules involved in posttranscriptional gene silencing. Their biosynthesis results in the formation of duplex consisting of a leading and a passenger strand of mature miRNA. The leading strand exhibits the main activity but recent findings indicate a certain role of the passenger strand as well.

Animal data suggest a role of carnosine supplementation in the prevention and treatment of obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease but only limited human data exists.
Methods And Results: Samples of vastus lateralis muscle were obtained by needle biopsy.

Background: In primary hyperparathyreosis, US and scintigraphy are the most usual preoperative localization methods for detection of parathyroid adenomas or hyperplasia.
Results: 88 (80 female) patients were detected. Unilateral neck exploration was performed in 43 patients (48.
Objective: To examine the regulatory aspects of zinc-α2-glycoprotein (ZAG) association with obesity-related insulin resistance.
Methods: ZAG mRNA and protein were analyzed in subcutaneous adipose tissue (AT) and circulation of lean, obese, prediabetic, and type 2 diabetic men; both subcutaneous and visceral AT were explored in lean and extremely obese. Clinical and ex vivo findings were corroborated by results of in vitro ZAG silencing experiment.
Irisin was identified as a myokine secreted by contracting skeletal muscle, possibly mediating some exercise health benefits via 'browning' of white adipose tissue. However, a controversy exists concerning irisin origin, regulation and function in humans. Thus, we have explored Fndc5 gene and irisin protein in two clinical studies: (i) a cross-sectional study (effects of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in drug-naive men) and (ii) an intervention study (exercise effects in sedentary, overweight/obese individuals).

The aim of the present study was to identify genes related to per2 expression and involved in cell cycle control. Patients surgically treated for colorectal carcinoma with up-regulated and down-regulated per2 expression in cancer versus adjacent tissue were studied.

Methodology: Standard hepatectomies were performed in a set of 24 pigs. Intraoperative intravenous (portal vein) hydroxyl radical scavenger Stobadine and Pentoxifylline was administered.
Background: The aim of the study is to perform a morphological analysis of certain lysosomal enzymes and parenchymal alterations during warm ischemia in the pig liver.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common complication after coronary artery bypass grafting operation (CABG). Experimental data have shown antiarrhythmic effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on myocardial cells. Orally administered PUFA could significantly reduce the rate of postoperative AF.

Objective: To investigate whether preoperative noncolonic cancer stem cells in bone marrow (BM) of R0 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients are cancer cells and impact on liver metastases (LM) rates.
Method: Prospective data on continuous CRC patients were collected from five centres. Bone marrow aspirates, taken at laparotomy, were sent to a single lab.

Background: Cases of acute pancreatitis with infected pancreatic necrosis warrant consideration of surgical interventions designed to achieve the goal of pancreatic debridement and drainage. Notable experience with the use of vacuum assisted closure for abdominal wall defects was an assumption for its peripancreatic application after debridement in septic patients with infected pancreatic necrosis confirmed by radiological evidence of gas or results of fine needle aspiration. The goal of this study was to evaluate our own experience with this new therapeutic technique.

Background/aims: Anatomic liver resection can be performed without vascular occlusion, but controlling blood loss during liver parenchyma dissection by compression or clamping of vessels in the liver hilus is almost the rule. The aim of this study is to assess the negative consequences of different types of occlusion techniques used during liver parenchyma dissection.
Methodology: From 2001 to 2003, 43 anatomical liver resections were performed in patients with primary and metastatic tumors.
