Introduction: Despite there being limited evidence, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) has become a common treatment for acute respiratory failure (ARF). The aim of this study was to identify the predictive factors of NIV failure, in order to enable early detection of patients failing the treatment.
Patients And Methods: Prospective cohort study was conducted that included all ARF patients that received NIV as the initial treatment between 2005 and 2009 in a fourteen-bed Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of a tertiary university hospital.
Aim: To compare diagnostic accuracy in cord blood of interleukin-6 (IL-6) with C-reactive protein (CRP) as predictors of early-onset neonatal sepsis (EOS) in newborns with prenatal risk factors for infection.
Methods: During 12 months, cord blood IL-6 and CRP were measured immediately after birth in neonates with prenatal risk factors of infection. The odds of developing sepsis based on IL-6 and CRP values were calculated using likelihood ratios (LR), and their accuracy as predictors was compared by binary logistic regression.
