Aims: In the Amazon region, pastures are the main land use subsequent to deforestation and this change can result in soil acidification and degradation. Liming is a management practice to increase soil pH, important to recover degraded lands and increase soil fertility, but its impacts on soil methane cycling in tropical soils is unknown. Here we investigate the role of soil pH on methane uptake under high concentrations of the gas, manipulating pasture and forest soils pH by liming and evaluating the active methane cycling microbial community.

Fruit morphogenesis is determined by the coordination of cell division and expansion, which are fundamental processes required for the development of all plant organs. Here, we show that the regulation of TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/CYCLOIDEA/PCF (TCP) LANCEOLATE (TCP2/LA) by miR319 is crucial for tomato fruit morphology. The loss of miR319 regulation in the semi-dominant La mutant led to a premature SlTCP2/LA expression during gynoecium patterning, which results in modified cell division during carpel development.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a wide variety of symptoms, including frequent neurological and psychiatric symptomatology. Psychiatric symptoms encountered in SLE are frequent, between 37 and 95% of SLE patients present them, can appear at any point in the course of the disease and may include almost any type of disorder. We present the case of a 32-year-old woman who presented an SLE debut with catatonic symptoms without previous psychiatric history, representing a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge given that the diagnosis was initially wrongly filtered out and required up to three hospital admissions in a row to reach a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Radiolytically generated radicals cause degradation of nutrients in food, materials in satellites and solar cells, and human health. Radiation effects are studied using gamma radiolysis, a low-throughput, high-cost, and low-accessibility method. We developed a higher-throughput, low-cost, non-radioactive, radical assay that produces radicals similar to those generated in gamma radiolysis and examined monoamide degradation.

Generalism in resource use is commonly considered a critical driver of population success, species distribution and extinction risk. This idea can be questioned as generalism may be a result rather than the cause of species abundance and range size. We tested these contrasting causal hypotheses focusing on host use in three databases encompassing approximately 44,000 mutualistic (hummingbird-plant), commensalistic (lichen-plant) and parasitic (flea-mammal) interactions in 617 ecological communities across the Americas and Eurasia.

Zebrafish larvae have emerged as a valuable model for studying heart physiology and pathophysiology, as well as for drug discovery, in part thanks to its transparency, which simplifies microscopy. However, in fluorescence-based optical mapping, the beating of the heart results in motion artifacts. Two approaches have been employed to eliminate heart motion during calcium or voltage mapping in zebrafish larvae: the knockdown of cardiac troponin T2A and the use of myosin inhibitors.

The synthesis of a new bis-BF tetrafluorobenzo-[α]-fused BOPYPY dye from 4,5,6,7-tetrafluoroisoindole and 2-hydrazinopyrazine is reported. The regioselectivity of nucleophilic substitution reactions at the periphery of the tetrafluorinated BOPYPY and its α-bromo derivative were investigated using N-, O-, S-, and C-based nucleophiles. Among the aromatic fluorine atoms, the F atom is consistently regioselectively substituted, except when the α-position contains a thiophenol group; in this case, F is substituted instead due to stabilizing π-π-stacking between the two aromatic groups.

How does a plant detect the changing seasons and make important developmental decisions accordingly? How do they incorporate daylength information into their routine physiological processes? Photoperiodism, or the capacity to measure the daylength, is a crucial aspect of plant development that helps plants determine the best time of the year to make vital decisions, such as flowering. The protein CONSTANS (CO) constitutes the central regulator of this sensing mechanism, not only activating florigen production in the leaves but also participating in many physiological aspects in which seasonality is important. Recent discoveries place CO in the center of a gene network that can determine the length of the day and confer seasonal input to aspects of plant development and physiology as important as senescence, seed size, or circadian rhythms.
