Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of lower respiratory tract infection, hospitalisation and death in adults.

Methods: Based on evidence regarding the impact of RSV on adult populations at risk for severe infection and the efficacy and safety of RSV vaccines, the Portuguese Society of Pulmonology, the Portuguese Association of General and Family Medicine, the Portuguese Society of Cardiology, the Portuguese Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, the Portuguese Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, and the Portuguese Society of Internal Medicine endorses this position paper with recommendations to prevent RSV-associated disease and its complications in adults through vaccination.

Conclusion: The RSV vaccine is recommended for people aged ≥50 years with risk factors (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, heart failure, coronary artery disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, immunocompromise, frailty, dementia, and residence in a nursing home) and all persons aged ≥60 years.

The aims of this study were to investigate the localization of non-phosphorylated β‑catenin and Galectin-3 (GAL-3), the regulation of the expression of both proteins by activation of estrogen receptors (ERs) and their role in tumorigenic characteristics of androgen-independent prostate cancer DU-145 cells. DU-145 cells were cultured in the absence (control), and presence of 17β-estradiol (E2). The global resurgence of syphilis has created a potent stimulus for vaccine development. To identify potentially protective antibodies against Treponema pallidum (TPA), we used Pyrococcus furiosus thioredoxin (PfTrx) to display extracellular loops (ECLs) from three TPA outer membrane protein families (outer membrane factors for efflux pumps, eight-stranded β-barrels, and FadLs) to assess their reactivity with immune rabbit serum (IRS). We identified five immunodominant loops from the FadL orthologs TP0856, TP0858 and TP0865 by immunoblotting and ELISA.

Testicular germ cell tumors have the highest incidence in young men (between 15 and 44 years of age) and its etiology is still unclear, but its emergence on puberty suggests a hormone-dependent mechanism for the development of these tumors and their progression. We previously identified the estrogen receptor ESR1, ESR2, GPER and an isoform of ESR1, the ESR1-36 in human testicular embryonic carcinoma NT2/D1 cells, and the activation of SRC induced by ESR1 and ESR2 in these cells. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the role of ER in the activation of ERK1/2, and the involvement of SRC and ERK1/2 on proliferation, migration, and invasion of the NT2/D1 cells.

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration with neuronal inclusions of the TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (FTLD-TDP) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder with only a limited number of risk loci identified. We report our comprehensive genome-wide association study as part of the International FTLD-TDP Whole-Genome Sequencing Consortium, including 985 cases and 3,153 controls, and meta-analysis with the Dementia-seq cohort, compiled from 26 institutions/brain banks in the United States, Europe and Australia. We confirm as the strongest overall FTLD-TDP risk factor and identify as a novel FTLD-TDP risk factor.

Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are highly damaging pests responsible for heavy losses in worldwide productivity in a significant number of important plant crops. Common pest management strategies rely on the use of synthetic chemical nematicides, which have led to serious concerns regarding their impacts on human health and the environment. Plant natural products, or phytochemicals, can provide a good source of agents for sustainable control of PPNs, due to their intrinsic characteristics such as higher biodegradability, generally low toxicity for mammals, and lower bioaccumulation in the environment.
