Nosocomial bloodstream infections with multidrug-resistant microorganisms have become a common health threat in intensive care settings worldwide. Understanding antimicrobial resistance and the outcomes of these infections is crucial for addressing this issue. This study aimed to investigate the burden, antimicrobial resistance, and 28-day outcomes of nosocomial bloodstream infections in the intensive care unit.

Chloroquine is still used as a first-line treatment for uncomplicated Plasmodium vivax malaria in India and resistance to this therapy can act as a major hurdle for malaria elimination. It is difficult to monitor drug-efficacy and drug resistance through in vivo and in vitro studies in case of Plasmodium vivax so analysis of molecular markers serves as an important tool to track resistance. Molecular methods that are currently in use for detecting single nucleotide polymorphisms in resistant genes including Polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Realtime-Polymerase chain reaction require highly sophisticated labs and are time consuming.

A 10-year-old girl presented to the outpatient department with a complaint of burning micturition for the past 1 week, which did not resolve with over-the-counter medication. Urine culture came out to be sterile, while on follow-up, the patient complained of severe itching in the perianal region. Microscopic examination of urine wet mount revealed a planoconvex helminthic egg and the case is discussed further.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 103 adult patients with CRAB-related VAP were analyzed, comparing outcomes between those treated with dual and triple antibiotic combinations involving sulbactam.
  • * Results indicate that the triple therapy (sulbactam, polymyxin B, and minocycline) significantly reduced 28-day mortality and improved other health markers compared to the dual therapy, suggesting it may be a more effective treatment option.

  • The study investigates the prevalence and impact of candidaemia in 67 ICUs across India, assessing how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced its rates and mortality.* -
  • Data from 401,601 patient days revealed higher candidaemia rates in COVID-19 ICUs (2.52/1000 patient days) compared to non-COVID-19 ICUs (1.05/1000 patient days), with associated mortality significantly higher in COVID-19 cases (61% vs. 41%).* -
  • Analysis identified C. tropicalis as the most common isolated species (26.7%), while C. auris, which had a high mortality rate, accounted for 17.5% of isolates

Background: Melioidosis is one of the emerging infections in India and is often neglected due to lack of awareness among clinicians. The diseases usually present as multifocal or focal abscesses with bacteremia, yet the isolated septic monoarthritic complicated with septic venous thrombosis is a rare presentation.

Case: This case report describes a 48-year-old male business executive with diabetes and alcoholism who developed septic arthritis caused by and no clear history of exposure to the organism.

Mycotic aneurysms, characterized by vessel wall dilation resulting from infections including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, are a rare but severe consequence of systemic infections. The term 'mycotic' was coined by William Osler to describe the first instance of a fungal-induced infected aneurysm. These aneurysms, accounting for 0.

Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in India. Surveillance of VAP is essential to implement data-based preventive measures. Implementation of ventilator-associated events (VAE) criteria for surveillance has major constraints for low resource settings, which can lead to significant underreporting.

Objectives: To investigate the genomic differences between two extensively drug resistant, ST16 strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae recovered from patients in the same ICU, one of which was colistin resistant.

Methods: Antimicrobial susceptibilities of the isolates were determined using VITEK-2. Hybrid assemblies for both strains were generated using Oxford Nanopore and Illumina technologies.

Background: Sepsis is a major health problem worldwide and is associated with high morbidity and mortality with every hour delay in initiation of therapy. A conventional method of blood culture and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST) takes around 48-72 hours. Empirical antibiotics need to be administered until the sensitivity report is made available.

Introduction: Brucellosis is a pervasive zoonotic disease causing considerable human morbidity worldwide. This report focuses on a case of neurobrucellosis in a rural Indian patient, emphasizing the need for timely microbiological confirmation given its nonspecific clinical presentation.

Case Presentation: A 55-year-old rural Indian farmer presented with a 3 week history of insidious, low-grade fever, myalgia, and arthralgia.

Purpose: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is largely studied in healthcare settings. There is a need to understand the fluctuations in AMR during pandemic at the community level. With urinary tract infection (UTI) being one of the most common infections in the community, the AMR profile of community-acquired UTI (CA-UTI) is considered representative AMR at the community level.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the presence and genotyping of an intestinal protozoan that causes gastroenteritis, specifically focusing on cases from a tertiary care center in Rajasthan, India, where it's often underreported.
  • It involved 50 patients, with 36% experiencing diarrhea; notable findings included high rates of stunting and wasting in children under 12.
  • The results indicated a predominance of assemblage B in 94% of the samples, suggesting potential zoonotic transmission.

  • A 35-year-old farmer has a red, wavy rash on the top of his left foot that really itches and feels like something is crawling under his skin.
  • The rash looks unusual and has a specific pattern that the doctors are worried about.
  • The case is being investigated more to figure out what might be causing this strange rash.

Article Synopsis
  • Gram-positive bloodstream infections (BSIs) are becoming a significant health issue, particularly in resource-limited areas, with high rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) complicating treatment options.
  • In a study conducted in Western India, 210 isolates were identified, revealing that about 29% of cases were healthcare-associated, with coagulase-negative staphylococci being the most common pathogen, and notable resistance to vancomycin and linezolid found in enterococci.
  • The overall mortality rate for these infections was 42.6%, with older age and MRSA infections identified as significant predictors of 30-day mortality.

Background: CNS manifestations represent an emerging facet of NTM infection with significant mortality. Due to protean presentation and low index of suspicion, many cases are often treated erroneously as tubercular meningitis or fungal infections.

Objectives: Literature on NTM CNS disease is scarce, with most available data on pulmonary disease.

Introduction Laparoscopic techniques have become standard for many surgeries, offering benefits such as quicker recovery and less pain. However, port-site infections (PSIs) can occur and pose challenges. PSIs can be early (within seven days) or delayed (after three to four weeks), with delayed PSIs often caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs).

Unlabelled: The microbial infection of the endocardium, popularly known as Infective Endocarditis (IE), is typically classified on the basis of anatomy, valve nativity and its associated microbiology. As per the associated microbiology, is the most common microorganism responsible for the cause of IE. Even though, the Streptococcus group accounts for a smaller percentage of IE, however this doesn't give us the liberty of ignoring the high mortality and morbidity associated with this pathogen.
