Background: Hypoxic brain injury is the leading cause of death in comatose patients following resuscitation from cardiac arrest. Neurological outcome can be difficult to prognosticate following resuscitation, and goals of care discussions are often informed by multiple prognostic tools. One tool that has shown promise is the SLANT score, which encompasses five metrics including initial nonshockable rhythm, leukocyte count after targeted temperature management, total adrenaline dose during resuscitation, lack of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and time to return of spontaneous circulation.

Article Synopsis
  • Errors in communication are a significant factor in preventable medical errors, particularly during nursing handoffs in neuro-intensive care units (NICUs) for postoperative neurosurgical patients.
  • A multidisciplinary team at a medical institution initiated an improvement program to enhance handoff protocols using the evidence-based IPASS format, involving evaluations through staff surveys and direct observations over one year.
  • The implementation of the formalized handoff protocol led to substantial improvements in perceptions and effectiveness of handoffs, increasing perceived organization, efficiency, completeness, and safety, while also enhancing teamwork and communication about critical patient concerns.

Background: While pregnant women in treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) face considerable challenges, common material hardships- food insecurity and housing instability, known to negatively impact maternal-child health, have been inadequately researched within this population. This study describes food/housing hardships and evaluates associations with key psychosocial factors.

Methods: A single-site prospective study, 100 3rd trimester women receiving prenatal care and medication-assisted treatment for OUD were interviewed, including screening for food/housing hardships, depressive symptoms, intimate partner vulnerability; and self-reported post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) history.

Introduction: Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is the fourth leading cause of death in the US. Numerous studies have demonstrated the use of comprehensive stroke units and neurological intensive care units (NICU) in improving outcomes after stroke. We hypothesized that an expanded neurocritical care (NCC) service would decrease resource utilization in patients with LHI.

Background: In many resource-poor settings such as Peru, children affected by HIV have a high prevalence of neurodevelopmental delays (NDDs) and remain excluded from adequate treatment.

Methods: Community health workers (CHWs) administered NDD screening instruments to assess child development and associated caregiver and household factors in 14 HIV-affected parent-child dyads. Focus group discussion with caregivers was conducted to explore their needs and behaviors around early child stimulation and to assess their perceptions of the screening experience.

Objective: This study has explored the impact of Hunt-Hess (H-H) grade of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) on the glycemic status of such patients during their intensive care unit (ICU) stay and has also analyzed whether H-H grade predicts their outcome independent of their glycemic status.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective case record review of prospectively maintained database of 1090 previously non-diabetic aSAH patients admitted to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia. H-H grade of SAH, serum and CSF glucose on admission, serum glucose on the day of surgery and 14 days post-surgery, as well as the extended Glasgow Outcome Score (GOS-E score) at discharge were noted.
