In this study, sulfated polysaccharide-rich extracts were isolated from 22 tropical seaweeds (4 red, 11 brown, and 7 green) found in northeastern Brazil, and evaluated for the role of anticoagulant agents. Fifteen of the extracts showed anticoagulant activity, including all the extracts from green seaweeds. (a green seaweed) extract was the most potent, requiring an amount of only 3 µg to double the plasma coagulation time in the activated partial thromboplastin time test.

Paxillin is a scaffold protein that participates in focal adhesion signaling in mammalian cells. Fission yeast paxillin ortholog, Pxl1, is required for contractile actomyosin ring (CAR) integrity and collaborates with the β-glucan synthase Bgs1 in septum formation. We show here that Pxl1's main function is to recruit calcineurin (CN) phosphatase to the actomyosin ring; and thus the absence of either Pxl1 or calcineurin causes similar cytokinesis defects.

In this work, we introduce an exact calculation method and an approximation technique for tracing the invariant manifolds of unstable periodic orbits of planar maps. The exact method relies on an adaptive refinement procedure that prevents redundant calculations occurring in other approaches, and the approximated method relies on a novel interpolation approach based on normal displacement functions. The resulting approximated manifold is precise when compared to the exact one, and its relative computational cost falls like the inverse of the manifold length.

We study the standard nontwist map that describes the dynamic behaviour of magnetic field lines near a local minimum or maximum of frequency. The standard nontwist map has a shearless invariant curve that acts like a barrier in phase space. Critical parameters for the breakup of the shearless curve have been determined by procedures based on the indicator points and bifurcations of periodical orbits, a methodology that demands high computational cost.

We investigate the basin of attraction properties and its boundaries for chimera states in a circulant network of Hénon maps. It is known that coexisting basins of attraction lead to a hysteretic behaviour in the diagrams of the density of states as a function of a varying parameter. Chimera states, for which coherent and incoherent domains occur simultaneously, emerge as a consequence of the coexistence of basin of attractions for each state.

Lafora disease (LD, OMIM 254780) is a rare disorder characterized by epilepsy and neurodegeneration leading patients to a vegetative state and death, usually within the first decade from the onset of the first symptoms. In the vast majority of cases LD is related to mutations in either the EPM2A gene (encoding the glucan phosphatase laforin) or the EPM2B gene (encoding the E3-ubiquitin ligase malin). In this work, we characterize the mutations present in the EPM2A gene in a patient displaying a slow progression form of the disease.

Background: It is possible that physical education professionals, especially those who participate in aerobic activities, have predisposing factors, signs and symptoms of overreaching (OVR) and overtraining (OVT) due to a high load and volume of exercise followed by suboptimal recovery time. The present study aimed to identify the predisposing factors, signs and symptoms of OVR and OVT in physical education professionals.

Methods: A questionnaire consisting of 42 questions (10 questions group) about predisposing factors and signs/symptoms was answered by 132 physical education professionals from both sexes (83 men and 49 women) who were allocated into a resistance training group (RG,  = 74), aerobic training group (AG,  = 20) and resistance and aerobic training group (RAG,  = 38).
